1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

JAMPro is a measuring computer system specially designed to control a power tong while making

up tubular connections in the oilfield. JAMPro consists of a Main Unit acting as the host and lo-cated on the rig floor, and an External Unit acting as a user panel at the tong.

At the Main Unit, the JAMPro operator adjusts the system, records the data and decides on

whether or not to accept the connection just made up. Furthermore, the data gathered by the

JAMPro System can be analysed and further commented on, statistics can be generated and, as

an option, data from leak detectors can be processed.

The Main Unit contains most of the electronic components. It is based on an industrial PC and

forms the heart of the system. It also contains all the parts used for the measuring functions and

the interfaces to the External Unit. This housing is designed Ex proof by using purging technol-ogy, while the in/outputs are designed intrinsically safe, except for the mains power supply 115 /

230 V AC.

An Ex proofed Ethernet connection is available as an option.

The External Unit of the Weatherford JAMPro System is located at the tong. It acts as an interface

between the Main Unit and the tong accessories, i.e. load cell, turns sensor and dump valve as

well as the leak detection system. The External Unit is available in different functionalities, as Bar

Graph Display Unit, as Graphic Display Unit, etc. They are connected to the PC by a special Ex

proof CAN bus interface. Some keys allow the user to interact with the Main Unit and accept or

reject a make up, while the display gives information about the status of the make up and/or the

reached torque.

The JAMPro System is designed for operation by one or two persons. The JAMPro operator

watches and operates the Main Unit, while the tong operator at the tong operates the tong valves.

It is highly advisable that both persons have at least visual contact, because the JAMPro operator

makes the decision to accept or reject a connection. The tong operator then has to act accord-

ingly, i.e. make up a rejected connection once more.

The entire JAMPro System is designed Ex proof. It can therefore be used in oil field environments

including gas hazardous areas.

The JAMPro System can be fitted to any Weatherford tong and leak detection system. We rec-

ommend to consult Weatherford for specific advice on the tong model or leak detection system

you want to use the JAMPro System with.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

1.1 MAIN UNIT

The Main Unit is designed as purge-protected. Therefore it can be located even in areas with risk

of explosion. Usually, it is located away from the well center, but on the rig floor. The JAMPro

System is controlled from the Main Unit.

The Main Unit consists of an industrial PC with keyboard and finger mouse. Compressed air flow-

ing through the housing purges the Main Unit.

Calibration and configuration of the JAMPro System are carried out at the Main Unit. Details on

software and controls are included in the JAMPro Software Manual.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

1.2 EXTERNAL UNIT

The External Unit of the JAMPro System acts as an interface between the Main Unit and the tong

accessories, i.e. loadcell, turns sensor and dump valve. The External Unit is available in different

functionalities, as Bar Graph Display Unit, as Graphic Display Unit, etc. All versions of the Exter-

nal Unit are designed intrinsically safe. The External Unit is located on the tong. As an option, 2

Bar Graph Units can be connected to the same JAMPro Main Unit. Note that only one Graphic

Display Unit can be connected at any one time.

1.2.1 Bar Graph Display Unit

The Bar Graph Display Unit of the JAMPro System acts as an interface between the Main Unit

and the tong accessories, i.e. loadcell, turns sensor and dump valve. It contains a glass covered

LC display with bar graph and message string. The Bar Graph Display Unit is designed intrinsi-cally safe. It is installed on the tong.

The Bar Graph Display Unit is connected to the Main Unit via a 25 m cable (standard length). The

sensors are connected to the Bar Graph Unit. The sensor data are directly fed through to the

Main Unit, and the LC module receives data and power supply via Fieldbus.

Note that a second Bar Graph Unit can be connected to the system as an option.

1.2.2 Graphic Display Unit

The Graphic Display Unit of the JAMPro System acts as an interface between the Main Unit and

the tong accessories, i.e. loadcell, turns sensor and dump valve. It contains a glass covered

large-scale graphic display (LC display). The Graphic Display Unit is designed intrinsically safe. It

is installed on the tong.

The Graphic Display Unit is connected to the Main Unit via a 25 m cable (standard length). The

sensors are connected to the Graphic Display Unit. The sensor data are directly fed through to

the Main Unit, and the LC module receives data and power supply via Fieldbus.

1.2.3 HOLD & Print Unit

The HOLD & Print Unit of the JAMPro System provides 2 non-intrinsically safe serial interfaces,

driven via the intrinsically safe CANbus. The HOLD & Print Unit must not be located in the Ex

area. The unit is connected to the Main Unit via the CT cable. Its mains cable must be connected

to a suitable 115 V/230 V AC power supply.

Leak Detection Systems UL 100 and UL 200 as well as a serail printer can be connected to the

HOLD & Print Unit.

1.3 OTHER COMPONENTS

Apart from the Main Unit and the External Unit, the JAMPro System comprises the turns counter,

the active loadcell and the hoses and cables for interconnection. If an in-line dump valve is to be

used, it also forms part of the JAMPro System.

An Ex proofed Ethernet connection is also available. The connector has the following Ex-proof

characteristic: Protection class: EEx de II C T6. It is allowed to use it in hazardous areas.

At tention: See the specif ic procedure for the Ethernet connection in Sect ion 1.4.

The turns counter can be one of 2 types:

The JAMPro turns encoder. It is located on top of the rotor and measures the pipe rotation by

means of a friction wheel touching the rotating pipe. This version detects the direction of therotation.

The pickup turns sensor. It is located inside the gear box of the tong. Rotation is detected by

means of a proximity switch. The direction of rotation is set by the JAMPro software.
