SIKH COMMUNITY STARTS KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS INITIATIVE

    Piara Singh Initiative

On Thursday, May 16th, 2013 the Jakara Movement, a national Sikh youth organization

headquartered in Clovis, CA, will be hosting their Know Your Neighbors initiative. In orderto facilitate greater engagement between the Sikh community and neighbors around the Sikh

Gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship), local volunteers will be sharing pizzas to local communities in

appreciation of their support after a hate crime in the neighborhood.

Gathering at Gurudwara Nanak Prakash [4250 E. Lincoln Fresno, CA 93725], local volunteers

will begin making pizzas at 10AM on Thursday [May 16, 2013] at 5PM delivery teams will be begin

distributing them in the neighborhoods near NanakSar [3060 S. Cherry Ave. Fresno, CA 93706]. The

initiative is meant to get to know the neighbors better and to generate goodwill in the neighborhood

that has hosted Nanaksar for the past 30 years.

On the following Tuesday, May 21, we will be hosting an Open House for all the neighbors at

Nanaksar [3060 S. Cherry Ave. Fresno, CA 93706].

The initiative was inspired by the events of Sunday, May 5th, 2013 when an 82 year old Sikh

grandfather was beaten nearly to death with a metal rod, just outside Nanaksar [3060 S. Cherry

Ave. Fresno, CA 93706]. He was targeted because of his distinctive appearance, with a turban.

Many neighbors expressed their dismay at the events and the Sikh community wished to express

    their thanks through these events.
