The President’s PerspectiveThe New Members Dinner was an enormous success again this year thanks to Grant and Nedra Rummell. Our private room at the Lake San Marcos Country Club provided us a beautiful view of the golf course. The food was excellent and the staff very attentive. In addition, Nedra supplied us all with an extremely well thought-out and useful New Members booklet chock-a-block full of worthwhile Club-related information. I met and had the oppor-tunity to speak with many new members displaying a great amount of enthusiasm for the Club, the newslet-ter and our events. You can find full coverage of this fine event and photos on page 21 in this issue. A huge Thank You to Nedra and Grant. Well done again!

The following morning was Rolling British Car Day hosted by the San Diego British Car Club Council. Find more on that adventure in the June issue.

Some of us in the Club are not as cultured as others. For example, I always thought a seven course din-ner was a hot dog and a six pack of Bud. In an effort to enlighten us, Patsy Millard annually hosts a club event with a certain amount of dignity. Last year we attended an exhibition at the Museum of Art. This month we are off to the Birch Aquarium for a private guided tour. If you have not already done so, please RSVP with Patsy soon. (Details on page four.)

The 2008 Concours season is upon us. (Those of you not interested in shows, don’t quit reading!) There are three shows scheduled in our local area starting with ours in June, the JOC LA in September and the IEJC in October. It’s time to break out the show car and knock off the cobwebs. But what about those members who are not interested in showing their Jags? We have excellent news for you! Paul Novak, Dick Cavicke and Bob Anderson are holding an in-structional event they’re calling Concours 101. This will be a beginner’s class. The idea is to clear up some of the mystery and misconception regarding Con-cours showing. See more regarding this in the Bonnet to Boot segment of this issue. If you’re still not inter-ested in showing your car, come anyhow. This year we are having a Club Picnic during the show. Beautiful Spanish Landing Park is the perfect place for a picnic on the grass with a view of the harbor. Enter your

2008 JUDGES AND CONCOURS TRAINING

The JCNA 2008 Concours season is underway, with several shows scheduled within a reasonable range of San Diego, plus the very popular Western States event in Grand Junction, Colorado, July 28th to Aug. 2nd. Our SDJC Concours is earlier than usual this year, Sunday, July 20th. Be-tween now and then, it’s important that Judges and Entrants learn the rule changes effective this year. Two SDJC Judges and Concours Entrant training sessions are scheduled. Both sessions will:

-instruct Judges and Entrants on the latest rule changes, -provide the opportunity for taking the 2008 Judge’s Test, in order to maintain Judge currencyortobegintheJudgeCertificationprocess, and -inform new Entrants, or those with only casual curiosity, what concours are all about.

For homework, please go to the <jcna.com> Concours Center to download and print the chap-ters of the latest JCNA Concours Rule Book; bring it with you. You are welcome to join us wheth-erornotyouhaveaspecificinterestinconcoursorjudging.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Car Club Council met April 1st at the Automotive Museum with about 75 club representatives and guests in at-tendance. The Greatest Show on Turf committee also met on the same date and is meeting every two weeks until the show on Saturday, June 7th. Joe Pifer gave a brief overview of what goes on at the Over The Hill Gang‘s “The Streak”. This is the 35th year the club will be producing the event and it has the largest and most expensive raffle around. It’s held at Campland on the Bay and starts on a Friday, May 9th this year and continues all day Satur-day, May 10th. If you register early enough and are lucky, you can camp at the grounds for the weekend. This makes not having to worry about driving anywhere much easier. There’s a huge bonfire on the beach on Friday night, Saturday is highlighted by the gang being hosts to the Wounded Warriors from Balboa Hos-pital, trophies awarded, all those huge raffles prizes being given away, dancing to a great band in the evening hours, and last but not least the reason the event was given the name “The Streak”. The run was established in 1972 – “streaking” was a very popu-lar sport – participated in by many thrill seekers, encouraged by many more of their friends and, to this day, after a very fun day the very late night can bring out the thrill seeker in many!! It’s a great event – benefiting a wonderful program (the Wounded Warriors), and does have a reputation of being filled with lots of entertainment!!

Council Vice President, Dave Keetch, is heading up the judging for the “Greatest Show on Turf” in June. There will be 15 classes and it’s a show & shine format. Dave needs at least 2 judges for each class. Clubs – if you register 10 or more cars in a category and provide judges, we will create a special club class and provide 1st & 2nd place trophies. Dave needs this info by May 12th if your club wants to participate. Contact Dave at (619) 933-1684 cell, or (619) 442-4182 home. Steve Licata is in charge of the vendor sales for the show. Steve has 39 con-firmed businesses and there are still a few vendor spaces left. He did drop hints the vendors who cater to the ladies are always welcome – the longer the lady of the family is happy, the longer her man can remain happy at the show! Steve can

New Members Dinner

Lake San Marcos Country Club

April 12, 2008

Our hostess and host for the evening - Nedra and Grant Rummell

The 2008 New Members dinner party was one of the best we have had. Now the dinner wasn’t just for new members to the club - so 47 of us turned out to welcome 19 of the new club members. Our goal of course is to not only wel-come them into the club, but to get to know more about them and their cars and start up some new friendships.

After dinner Paul Novak had a special film presentation for us about the early days of Jaguar. He cut it off after about 15 minutes, with promises of showing more at the next social event.

Special thanks to Grant & Nedra for arranging such a lovely dinner and a

Tech-Tips: From Bonnet To BootArticle and Photos by Paul M. Novak

My beautifully restored and concours winning 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas completed its one month of Dealership Display in the Jaguar Kearney Mesa showroom on 13 April and was replaced by a gorgeous Regency Red 1972 Series 1 XJ6 owned by Mike and Jennifer Zavos. I met up with Mike outside the dealership showroom where he was doing a last minute cleanup since driving down from Fallbrook. Then we went inside to meet with Vernon Honore, the Sales Manager of Jaguar Kearney Mesa, to discuss the display car swap. I started up my Jaguar (I’m pleased to say that it came to life instantly on the very first crank after sitting for over a month in the showroom) and carefully maneuvered it out of place and through the open glass double doors at the front of the showroom while Mike and Vernon provided steering directions. Once my Jaguar was safely out of the showroom and parked, Mike started up his XJ6 and maneuvered it into place while Vernon and I provided steering directions. With just inches to spare through the front doors and alongside the beautiful new showroom Jaguars, there wasn’t much room for error.

With Mike’s XJ6 safely in place it was time for last minute detailing, placement of display signs and a few photos. Mike’s entire car is a magnificent example of a classic Jaguar and I’m sure it will be a source of interest for Jaguar Kearny Mesa employees and cus-tomers alike. One of the remarkable things about Mike’s car is the beautiful engine bay restoration work. You have to see it to be-lieve it. If you have a classic Jaguar and are interested in participating in the Dealership Displays, please contact Stick Holmes and he will provide you with the details. Stick has a couple more cars lined up for the Dealership Display, but that he is always looking for volunteers for future months. If you are in the Kearny Mesa area, please stop by to visit Jaguar Kearny Mesa to see the wonder-ful new Jaguars and Aston Martins for sale and to admire beautiful classic Regency Red Series I 1972 XJ6 currently on display.

Concours 101 Workshop, Saturday 10 May 2008, 10 AM until noon

If you are interested in learning more about what a Concours d’Elegance is all about, then please join JCNA Chief Judge Dick Cavicke, Bob Anderson and I for a fun and informative “Concours 101” workshop in the training room of the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park on Saturday 10 May from 10 AM until noon. There is no cost for this workshop. RSVPs are requested so that we can make sure we have enough materials for everyone attending. See the announcement under the “Reservations Required” section of this Jaguar Tracks for more information and directions. RSVP to me at (858) 342-0445 or [email protected] by 8 May.

If you ever thought about entering your Jaguar in a concours this workshop is for you. No prior concours knowledge or experience is required.

Intake and Exhaust. Here are some questions Jaguar owners have recently asked and answers I provided based on my experience and research. If you are handy and interested in working on your Jaguar, there are a lot of things that you can do to increase your knowledge and enjoyment while reducing your cost of ownership. Purchase some shop manuals and tools, and start today. If you feel that the work on your Jaguar is better left to the profes-sionals, you should still learn more about how your car works so that you will be better able to understand problems as they occur and evaluate the recommendations of your professional service and repair shop. The questions and answers in this column were taken from my recent emails exchanges with fellow Jaguar enthusiast and members of www.Jag-Lov-ers.org and discussions with members of the San Diego Jaguar Club.

Q1: I am about to start removing the front and rear windshields from my Jaguar to remove some rust. How do I remove the chrome trim as I have no idea how to get it off without damaging it? Owner 1983 XJ6.

Greatest Show on Turf, San Diego Automotive Museum, Saturday 7 June.

For the past two years I have been helping out the San Diego Automotive Museum with displays of Jaguars from the San Diego Jaguar Club during their annual “Greatest Show on Turf” fund raiser. In 2006 the focus of our eighteen car dis-play was eleven Jaguar the E-Types (from 1961-1974), and last year our thirty car display included nineteen XJ-Ss (from 1976 to 1996). This year I plan to focus our display on the XJ series of saloons/sedans from 1968 through the modern 2008 versions including the following cars referred to by their internal Jaguar project name/number.

1. XJ Series I (1968-1973) 2. XJ Series II (1974-1979.5) 3. XJ Series III (1979.5-1987, 1992 for V12 equipped cars) 4. XJ40 (1988-1994) 5. X300 (1995-1997, XJ12 1995-1996) 6. X308 (1998-2003) 7. X350 (2004-current)

If you are interested in a really fun time, please plan to participate and display your Jaguar on Saturday 7 June at Balboa Park. If you are not interested in displaying your Jaguar, stop by anyway to see the hundreds of cars on display. I am hoping to have forty Jaguars on display including 20 or more XJs. If you don’t know what an XJ40 looks like, want to see a V12 equipped X300, or compare the differences between the Series I, II and III XJs, please put this event on your calendar and plan to stop by and see our display. See other information in this issue of Jaguar Tracks and on our website about registration for the Greatest Show On Turf. When registering list “Jaguar” under the Special Club Class. Please let me know if you have any questions about this and if you plan to participate, RSVP to me at (858) 342-0445 or [email protected] so that I can include you on future emails with Greatest Show On Turf Jaguar display information.

A1: The stainless steel (not chrome) trim around the front and rear windshields of your XJ6 are best taken off after the windshields are removed from the car. They can not be easily removed without damaging them with the windshields in the car as the trim is held in place with the sealant that seals the windshields to the car. You will have to cut through that sealant in order to remove your windshields, then you can remove the trim when the windshields are out of the car.

Q2: I just obtained an early Jaguar XK engine, possibly from an XK120, and would like to know what year and model car it came from. Where is the engine number stamped on the block?

A2: The engine number for an XK 120 engine should be stamped on the right (intake) side of the engine block above the oil filter housing. If this engine is from an early XK120 then I believe it should be an engine number that begins with a “W” or “WF”. If there is a lot of oil and dirt on the engine it might take some scraping or wire brushing to find the engine number. Here are a couple of pictures of where the engine number is located on one of the two spare Jaguar 3.4L XK engines that I got from SDJC member Curtis Parker when he was doing a little spring cleaning.

Upper right: Engine number location, early Jaguar XK engineLower right: 7 3.4L XK Engine # V4190-8 probably from an XK150
