We are facing today scarcity of most of the essential goods and services, and these shortages will only aggravate in future;

Food, Housing, Water, Electricity etc.Under “Good Earth” development programmes of ‘Jago Mumbai’ , we are

particularly concerned with; Water Conservation. Electric Power Conservation, Propagation of Solar/Wind Energy. Domestic Solid Waste Management Environment. My talk today will be mainly on the above aspects with reference to Mumbai

and taking the developments at the Sealine Society only as an example, though the above problems hold good for whole of India nay the World.

It is feared that Half of India may go thirsty by 2030. !!

Page 3: Jago Mumbai (MCGM H-W Ward Meet)_Navin Chandra_2013

Population : 12 mm, Over 30% Living in Slums Density of Population : 22000 per sq. km. Shortage of Drinking Water : 800 MLD Shortage of Electric Power : 500 MW Domestic Solid Waste : 8000 MT per day Environment : Degrading

Result : Widespread Poverty, Poor Health Conditions, Environmental Degradation, Difficult Transport and Security Issues.

Good Earth Programmes of “JAGO MUMBAI’ Movement : Water, Energy, Domestic Solid Waste Management, Environment

These are the areas where common citizens can play a significant role for improvement. We together must strive to improve upon today’s situation.

MUMBAI : India’s Commercial Capital – 2012

The WATER PICTURE in MUMBAI/MAHARASHTRA

The Ground Water Table in Mumbai is fast depleting – already over 100 meters deep at many places.

Some 7000 bore-wells exploiting the water table, but hardly any charging in the ground.

Lowering of Ground Water Level is causing ‘Salt Attack’ - - sea water seeping into the soil and making the ground water useless for drinking and corroding the building foundation.

On the other hand, due global warming, the sea level will increase in years to come.

Not much additional supply of water can be expected from Vaitarna and other schemes because of continuing drought situation in interior Maharashtra and pressure to divert water there.

Chief Minister expects worst drought in 2013 in Maharashtra in 50 years and has sought Rs. 2200 crores from centre in 2013 to fill the water reserves.

Such drought will also result in serious shortfall in food production.

Page 5: Jago Mumbai (MCGM H-W Ward Meet)_Navin Chandra_2013

Therefore, it is high time we all must take all types of WATER CONSERVATION measures on a War Footing :

Consume less Reuse and recycle Stop leakages (650 mld water leaks from pipelines in Mumbai) Use Drip – Irrigation and not Flood - Irrigation.

Above all, there is no justification at all of wasting the scarce drinking water for non-drinking purposes, which accounts for over 40% of the total water consumption, when many others are not getting water to drink.

Page 6: Jago Mumbai (MCGM H-W Ward Meet)_Navin Chandra_2013

The WATER PICTURE in MUMBAI/MAHARASHTRA

Desalination of Sea Water is not the answer due high power consumption and disposal of salt-sediments. Cloud Seeding is very costly and the result is uncertain.

The Practical, low-cost and high yield conservation methods of Water in order of priority are :

Rain Water Harvesting. Gray bath-room and waste water recycling. STP and ETP.

Page 7: Jago Mumbai (MCGM H-W Ward Meet)_Navin Chandra_2013

RWH POTENTIAL IN MUMBAI Area of Mumbai = 437 Sq. Km. Annual average rainfall = 2000 mmTotal Rain water falling over Mumbai = 874,000 million litres

Or = 2395 mld

This is about 3 times the present shortage of water in Mumbai.

TARGET BY 2014i. At least 50% of the Mumbai Societies do RWH.ii. No Bore-wells without RWH.iii. Stop use of Drinking water for non-drinking purposes.

RESULTNo water shortage, Mumbai will have plenty of water round the clock and

can even help other areas which are short of water

‘Jago Mumbai ‘ EFFORTS ON WATER MANAGEMENT We are assisted mainly by 2 Engg. Contractors engaged in Water

Management for several years now. Osmosis Autopump India Pvt. Ltd.

Waterwise Systems

Over 20 RWH Systems installed in Mumbai in the last few years with good results - - 6 in Khar/Bandra area. A few examples cited here.

After ‘Satyamev Jayate’ TV Programme in July 2012, We received over 200 RWH inquiries from all over India - - Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Goa, Gujarat, Delhi and Punjab etc.

Our team is following up over 100 such inquiries, studying and giving them suggestions/proposals free of any cost to them. But only 3 of them have adopted actual installation.

Our follow-up continues. We request all ALMs and BMC to propagate and encourage Rain and Grey water harvesting/recycling.

The SEALINE STORYGood Earth Programmes

Sealine CHS is a small society having 10 Flats on 7 Storeys in Khar (West), Over the past 6 years we have developed and installed the following Schemes:

Domestic Solid Waste Segregation and in-house Vermi-Composting - 2005 Rain Water Harvesting - 2006 Solar Power - 2007 Solar Hot Water - 2007 Wind Mill - 2010

The investment made totaling about Rs. 20 lakh in the first 4 projects (except in case of the wind-mill) has already been paid back and those facilities are f.o.c. now.

SOLAR POWER PACK & WIND MILL AT SEALINE

First PV installation was done in 2006 and we soon completed 3 other installations ( space problem ) in 2007 to a total capacity of 2.2 KWH per day All the lights in the common area of Sealine are lit with Solar power. We have also provided 1-2 lights in each flat. We never have a black-out in Sealine. All these lights have been replaced with LED tubes and bulbs which has reduced the electrical consumption a lot. As the solar PV production and efficiency goes down during the monsoon, we installed a Wind-Mill in 2010. The higher wind velocity during the monsoon compensates for the loss of PV production.

DOMESTIC SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Mumbai produces about 8000 MT/Day of Domestic Solid Waste, of which some 5000 MT is the Wet Waste. This excludes the e-waste and the building –construction waste etc. Huge task and high cost of collection, transport and dumping such increasing quality of waste. All the dumping grounds like Deonar, Kanjurmarg etc are overflowing --- causing pollution and misery to the citizens. Only Practical Long-Term Solution :a.Segregate the Waste. Compost the wet waste within the Society/Mohalla/Ward. This will reduce the quantity to 1/10th and convert it into useful manure.b.Dry Waste is further segregated and recycled for reuse.c.Waste-to-Electricity plants ( like the pune waste plant ) are installed. About 70 MT of waste can generate 1 MW of electricity.Sealine Society is composting the wet waste in-house --- ‘Marinisha’ Award winner.

Page 27: Jago Mumbai (MCGM H-W Ward Meet)_Navin Chandra_2013

VERMI-COMPOSTING – AT SEALINE

Wet waste put in the covered pits having worms. Ready as compost in 8-10 weeks.

No odour, No insects

Page 28: Jago Mumbai (MCGM H-W Ward Meet)_Navin Chandra_2013

WET BIODEGRADABLE WASTE DISPOSAL

For the first time, 100% Biodegradable Trash Bags of good Quality are now available in Mumbai from Avantika Bioplast.

Wet waste packed in such bags can be sent straight to the dumping ground – No need for any segregation again. No Spillage. Clean operation, no odour. Speedier transport at lower cost.

But due Imported raw material and low production, present cost per bag is high around Rs. 5/- per bag. BMC can benefit on the total operation even if they heavily subsidize the biodegradable Trash Bags.

Page 29: Jago Mumbai (MCGM H-W Ward Meet)_Navin Chandra_2013

For H/W Ward ‘Jago Mumbai’ requests BMC and all the ALMs to propagate and encourage. Rain water Harvesting – Save drinking water and give it to the needy thirsty people. Solar Power and Hot water – Save Money, Save Environment. Domestic Solid Waste Management segregate and compost the wet waste. Recycle the Dry waste, Keep Mumbai clean. Protect Environment. BMC Facilitate permission for RWH, but no bore-wells without RWH. Give incentives to encourage the societies adopting these developments. A Rupee spent by you will save you Rs. 10/- While citizens should segregate and compost the domestic wet waste, its long-term solution lies in installation of several waste-to-electricity plants around Mumbai. 70MT of waste can generate 1 MW of electricity.

Tell us Whoever is keen and interested in these essential developments and we will be pleased to assist them.
