Final week of IMF esk Krumlov: Arturo Sandoval and Carmina BuranaJae A Yoo fluteThe final festival week will offer four concerts. On Tuesday 2nd August South Korean flautist Jae A Yoo will perform the Concerto for flute and orchestra in D minor by C. P. E. Bach together with the South Czech Philharmonic Teplice conducted by Jan Kuera at the Masquerade Hall. Besides this composition the audience will also hear the Overture to the opera La Cenerentola by G. Rossini, Joseph Haydns Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor Farewell and orchestral versions of the composition titled Birth by Jan Kuera.

A pupil of the legendary Dizzy Gillespie, he has worked his way up to be-come one of the worlds most recognized jazz trum-pet and flugelhorn players, however, he is also a recog-nized interpreter of classical music, a pianist and com-poser, he conducts mas-terclasses and has worked at the University of Florida as a Professor. He regularly performs with leading sym-phony orchestras around the world. Vivaciously, yet with ease and charm, he is involved in at least four mu-

sic genres: he can play an Afro-Cuban melody perfectly as well as be-bop, a concert of classical music and a beautiful ballad. This year in May he received an honorary doctorate degree at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and in 2013 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. According to his own words, Sandoval is grateful to the United States for a number of things. It was immigration which gave him the energy and power to achieve his dreams. In 2000 a movie based on his life, For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, which starred Andy Garcia as Arturo and for which Sandoval composed the music, was made about him. Composer John Wil-liams said about it, Arturo Sandoval is one of the greatest talents of the contemporary music scene. Besides that, real enjoyment of the music which he does gushes from him... Arturo Sandoval will make two appearances in esk Krumlov. The first of his concerts will take place on Thursday 4th August at the Castle Riding Hall, during which he will be accompanied by the South Czech Philharmonic. Sandoval will play the European premiere of his Concerto for trumpet and orchestra no. 2 and also the Concerto for trumpet and orchestra in A flat major by A. Arutiunian. The following day, on Friday 5th August, Arturo Sandoval accompanied by the CBC Big Band will perform jazz compositions. During this concert he will also pay tribute to the man who inspired him, Dizzy Gillespie. I am really looking forward to both concerts in esk Krumlov! It is a beautiful town with a fantastic audience. Five years ago my concert was an unforgettable experience for me and I am glad that I am coming back to esk Krumlov!

Carl Orff: Carmina BuranaThe closing concert of the 25th year will be truly spectacular. On Saturday 6th August the audience in the Brewery Garden will hear Carl Orffs work Carmina Burana, the famous cantata inspired by motives from a medieval collection of religious, satirical, amorous and drinking songs and poems of the same name. It consists of student poetry from a manuscript written around 1230 which was discovered in a Benedictine monastery in the foothills of the Alps. Now it is stored in the Bavarian State Library. Carl Orff simply, yet innovatively in the context of classical music, used this work and created this impressive piece including the most popular part Fortuna imperatrix mundi (Fortune, Empress of the World). In the cantata, which is the first and the most famous of Orffs trilogy Trionfi, solo performances and majestic parts with distinct orchestra accompaniment alternate. Since its first public performance in 1937 Carmina Burana has achieved success around the world and thanks to its originality and distinctiveness is gradually becoming one of the most often played compositions of the 20th and 21st century.

The piece will be performed by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of Petr Vronsk. The vocal soloists will be soprano Natalia Roman, who comes from Moldova, South African countertenor Roger O. Isaacs and Norwegian baritone Audun Iversen. The Khn Choir of Prague and the Czech Philharmonic Childrens Choir will sing.

Brazilian EveningOn Friday 12th August the festival will offer the epilogue, a special event which forms part of the project Olympic South Bohemia: Brazilian Evening. The festival has prepared a carnival parade through town and later a program in the Brewery Garden during which the band Carisma, dance group Tradicin as well as the group Tam Tam Batucada, which will present a drum show, will perform.

band consisting of Milan Vyskoni (guitar, piano), Milan Osadsk (accordion) and Andrej Gl (violoncello). The concert was disturbed by the weather as just before the start of the concerts the first drops fell and during the whole of Szidi Tobiass performance persistent rain was present in the sold-out Kooperativa Garden. However, this did not put off any of the viewers and they all stayed until the end. They were rewarded by a glass of wine which was served after the concert. I would like to thank all those who bravely sat in their raincoats and stayed for the entire concert. With the band, we have played in places where it was raining and there were bolts of lightning but this rain just wouldnt stop. I am sorry about this as esk Krumlov really is a beautiful town, where elegance and good will are wedded. This garden is also wonderful, said Szidi Tobias after the concert.

Busoniho, jsem proto rd, e festival skladbu zaadil do sv dramaturgie, ekl Kun Woo Paik. V zvru Busoniho skladby zazpvala i musk st Khnova smenho sboru, klavristu dle doprovodila Severoesk filharmonie Teplice pod taktovkou Alfonsa Scarana. Orchestr zahrl rovn symfonickou bse Noc na Lys hoe Modesta Petrovie Musorgskho. S tmto orchestrem jsem se setkal zhruba ped esti lety a padli jsme si takkajc do noty, ped temi roky jsem se pak stal fdirigentem tlesa, uvedl Alfonso Scarano. Kun Woo Paik je vjimenm slistou, je pro ns ct s nm spolupracovat. Potily m i reakce divk, celou dobu pozorn naslouchali, pestoe je koncert opravdu dlouh a nron. Velk potlesk a standing ovations jsou pro m dkazem, e i obtn skladba, je-li mistrn provedena, m na letnm festivalu sv msto.

Noc s Mozartem se odehrla v novm koncertnm prostoru

but I feel as if I had known this town for ever, it is really close to my heart. This year I especially looked forward to playing Ferruccio Busonis concert. This piece is really demanding and there arent many opportunities to present it to an audience. This year 150 years have passed since F. Busonis birth and therefore I am glad that the festival included this work in the program, said Kun Woo Paik. At the end of Busonis composition the male part of the Khn Choir of Prague sang and the pianist was accompanied by the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice under the baton of Alfonso Scarano. The orchestra also played the symphonic poem Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky. I met this orchestra about six years ago and we clicked, so to say, and three years ago I became the chief conductor of the ensemble, said Alfonso Scarano. Kun Woo Paik is an exceptional soloist, it is an honour for us to cooperate with him. We were pleased with the reactions of the viewers, they listened carefully all the time although the concert was really long and demanding. A big applause and standing ovations are proof of the fact that even a demanding composition, if masterfully performed, can find its place at a summer festival.

On Friday 29th July the fes-tival paid tribute to W. A. Mozart by a concert on the occasion of the 260th anniversary of his birth. Sym-phony no. 38 in D major was performed in the garden of the newly reconstructed monastery. This composi-tion comes from the time of Mozarts greatest suc-cesses and its premiere took place in Prague in 1787 during the compos-ers first visit, therefore it bears the subtitle Prague

Byla to svm zpsobem premira, uvedli jsme novou verzi nedokonenho Mozartova Requiem, v n jsme se snaili zohlednit vechny prameny a skici, kter se zachovaly. Podoba skladby byla proto trochu jin, ne je obvykl. V orchestru jsme tak mli nkolik autentickch nstroj z Mozartovy doby - pozouny, tympny a barokn pozitiv, ekl po koncert dirigent Vojtch Spurn. A prozradil, e Mozartovo Requiem dirigoval pod irm nebem poprv: Proveden v plenru bylo pro m i pro orchestr velkou vzvou. The second composition of the evening was a spiritual piece and one of the gems of classical music Requiem in D minor. The South Czech Philharmonic played under the baton of Vojtch Spurn and during the Requiem the Khn Choir of Prague and soloists Eva Hornykov, Alena Kropkov, udovt Ludha and Peter Mikul made an appearance. In a way it was a premiere, we performed a new version of Mozarts unfinished Requiem, in which we tried to take account of all the sources and sketches which were preserved. The form of the composition was therefore slightly different to the usual form. In the orchestra we also had several authentic in-struments from Mozarts period trombones, kettledrums and a Baroque positive, said conductor Vojtch Spurn after the con-cert. And he revealed that he had conducted Mozarts Requiem un-der the open skies for the first time, Performing in the open air was a big challenge both for me and for the orchestra. The acoustics of the interiors really help the sound of the instruments, whether it is a theatre, a concert hall or a church. garden is of course a sacral space so the Requiem fits in. Thanks to the diligence of all the musicians and sensitive work with the sound we managed to balance all the groups of instruments and this even-ing was a great experience both for us and the viewers. The concert A Night with Mozart was a premiere also for another reason: it took place in a new concert venue, the Monastery Garden, for the first time. The terraced auditorium offered an impressive panoramic view of the centre of esk Krumlov with the castle tower and the roofs of the historical buildings as well as the surrounding hills. The warm even-ing and the sky full of stars only enhanced the experience from beauti-ful music.

The evening of musicals belongs to the most popu-lar concerts every year and this year was no differ-ent. On Saturday 31st July the sold-out Brewery Gar-den welcomed the musical stars and the four soloists from Broadway theatres made the audience excited with their very first song. Christiane Noll, Capathia Jenkins, Rob Evan and Doug LaBrecque performed in a program titled Bravo

In the first half of the evening the audience heard melodies from musicals, rock ope-ras and films (Les Misrables, Miss Saigon, Tommy, Rent, Jersey Boys and others) and the second half belonged especially to the composi-tions from the musicals Mamma Mia! and Phantom of the Opera. The delighted audience exacted five encores, the viewers danced and moved the torches in their mobile phones above their heads to replace lighters used in the past. But as Christiane Noll remarked, there were still a few viewers from the old school with lighters.

The viewers were abso-lutely fantastic, it was like a big party. After such a concert you feel great, said Christiane Noll after the concert. It is a pleasure for us to watch the audi-ence and see how the view-ers are enjoying themselves. We often sing together with Christiane, Rob and Doug and we enjoy every perfor-mance. Bachs harpsichord built according to the original plans which can now be found in Bachs native home in Eisenach) in the altar space and a historical positive organ in the Castle Chapel of St. George on the gallery above the altar. The instru-ment comes from 1753, its author is organ maker Friedrich Ferdi-nand Semrd. In the darkened chapel Jaroslav Tma created an in-timate atmosphere filled with the beautiful tones and history and pleased the viewers, who were only around fifty as no more could fit into the chamber space. The Castle Chapel is a beautiful place and this music fits in well. At this time the castle is peaceful and silent and when music comes after silence, it is beautiful. I selected the compositions for this evening so that they could be played on the organ but also on the harpsichord, I decided today right here. The organ is in a very good state, it was carefully restored so I could play both instruments alternately, said Jaroslav Tma after the concert.

E.ON has been connected with the festival from the start of its activities in the Czech RepublicVladimr Vcha, corporate communication E.ON

E.ON has been a partner of the IMF esk Krumlov for more than ten years. How do you evaluate this cooperation and what does this partnership bring to your company?The name of our company has been connected with the International Music Festival esk Krumlov from the beginning of its activities in the Czech Republic, that is, as it has been already been mentioned, for more than 10 years. We are glad that our participation at the festival has had a favourable response also among our customers who visit the festival. From the organizational point of view we appreciate the helpfulness and willingness of the organizers and festival management during joint discussions about how to connect the festival with our activities in the power industry. The production of the festival, for example, uses ecological vehicles which run on compressed natural gas or electricity and viewers may visit the traditional Childrens Afternoon in the Rhythm of Energy, which has found a stable place in the festival program. I am convinced that this great cooperation will continue in the years to come.

What innovations has your company prepared for its customers? There are many innovations. If anybody is interested, I recommend visiting our website www.eon.cz, where you can find everything we can offer to our customers at the moment. But to be a little more specific, we have recently launched a unique product E.ON Rdce (in English E.ON Advisor), which is a combination of an on-line encyclopedia, internet search engine and personal consultancy. After inserting the address www.eon.cz/radce, people can find hundreds of practical pieces of advice from the field of energy saving, ecology and alternative transport. Another service is E.ON Servis+. It consists in practical help during natural disasters, elimination of breakdowns and technical accidents in households or premises as well as the provision of legal services for businesses. Last but not least I would like to speak about the newly established blog www.ecofuture.cz. It is not a service in the proper sense of the word but visitors of this domain can get a lot of interesting information, impulses, advice and ideas perhaps even inspiration for their home, workplace and get-togethers with their friends.

The whole power industry is undergoing significant change at present. What did last year bring in the field which your company is involved in and how do you evaluate the past year from the point of view of your company?Yes, it is really so, the world of the power industry, as we have known it in the last decades, is significantly changing. The customer is in the spotlight, not the consumer or user as our customers used to be called in the past. This is certainly good news. Power companies are not solely suppliers of commodities any more but the offer of services and solutions for customers connected with the energy management of the household or business is starting to prevail. Also our company had to react to these changes and that is why the E.ON group was divided into two companies at the beginning of 2016. The company Uniper, which looks after the conventional power industry, as we know it from the past, and the company E.ON, which presents itself as a modern, customer-oriented company offering innovative and technologically advanced solutions and also puts emphasis on sustainability and environmental protection. Proof of the fact that we not only proclaim our mission in this respect but also fulfil it, is the recently opened biggest charging station for electric vehicles in the Czech Republic, which we have built near exit 90 on motorway D1 near Vystrkov.

Cel energetika dnes prochz obrovskou zmnou. Co pinesl losk rok v oblasti, kterou se vae spolenost zabv, a jak uplynul rok hodnotte z pohledu va spolenosti?Ano, je tomu skuten tak, svt energetiky, jak jej znme v uplynulch desetiletch, se vznamn mn. Na prvn msto se dostv zkaznk, nikoliv spotebitel nebo odbratel, jak jsme byli zvykl naim zkaznkm dve kat. To je urit dobr zprva.
