Potent performers dispatch high-powered rock ‘n’ roll
Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real is an American rock ‘n’ roll group based in Venice, Calif . Honoring a promise he made
to his father, Nelson first picked up the gui-tar at age 11 and taught himself the craft by playing along to classic songs by Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix .
Now at the age of 24, Nelson is cultivating a following the old fashioned way by touring year-round, delivering high-energy perfor-mances to fans across the country .
In the past three years, Lukas Nelson and POTR performed more than 400 shows, playing with the likes of Neil Young, John Fogerty, Bob Weir, B .B . King, and Bob Dylan . The band has self-released four records and will be releasing its next full-length album later this year . www.promiseofthereal.com

The Flannel AttractionsDrawing from singer-guitarist Pat Chadwick's experiences
entering and leaving the tumult of city life, The Flannel Attractions’ songwriting depth can be compared to modern folk revival acts; its instrumentation laying somewhere between the loose folk pop of The Lumineers and the vir-tuosic and progressive bluegrass of The Punch Brothers . Stunning harmonies by singer-violinist Emily Yarbrough are likely to evoke comparisons to The Civil Wars and The Head and the Heart . www.theflannelattractions.com

Since the 1930s, the Snow King ski area has played an important role in recreation, commerce and community development in Wyoming and Jackson Hole . As Wyoming’s first ski area, Snow King paved the way for similar winter resorts on Forest Service land in the Wind River, Bighorn and Medicine Bow mountains . Within Jackson Hole, the development of Snow King fostered a com-munity culture built around the enjoyment and skill of winter sports, which eventually made Jackson Hole an international ski destination . Old Crow Medicine ShowSpirited pickers present classic American roots
4th of July
Old Crow Medicine Show got its start bus-king on street corners in New York state and up through Canada, winning audiences along the way with its boundless energy . The band eventually found itself in Boone, NC, where it caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy . Watson invited the band to play at MerleFest, helping to launch its career . Shortly thereaf-ter, the band relocated to Nashville, TN, for a residency at the Grand Ole Opry .
It's been nearly 15 years since these humble beginnings, and the band has went on to tour the world, selling more
than 800,000 albums, becoming frequent guests on A Prairie Home Companion, and playing renowned festivals, such as Bonn-aroo, Coachella, and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival .
In 2011, Crow Medicine embarked on the historic Railroad Revival Tour with Mum-ford and Sons and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros . This tour had the bands riding a vintage train from California to New Orleans, playing shows along the way . The magic of this musical excursion across America's vast landscape is captured in the Emmet Malloy-directed documentary, Big
Easy Express . This year, Old Crow Medicine Show, along with Mumford and Sons and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, won the Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video for the film.
Old Crow Medicine Show now has four studio albums to its name . On its newest album, Carry Me Back, Old Crow continues to craft classic American roots music while propelling itself in new directions . Carry Me Back represents a new stretch of road in the timeless journey of a rambling string band . www.crowmedicine.com
Parker MillsapRaised in a Pentecostal church in central Oklahoma, Parker
Millsap is no stranger to the spiritual power of music . The 19-year–old and his best friend since eighth grade (and upright bassist), Michael Rose, perform with vigor not uncommon in spirit–filled churches across the Midwestern United States.
The group has performed in a variety of different formats but eventually whittled itself down to a bare bones, song–focused act . Millsap handles songwriting, guitar and vocal duties while Rose rounds out the sound with his expertly placed bass lines . Adding some string sensibilities to the mix is Daniel Foulks on fiddle. www.parkermillsap.com

Young DublinersYoung Dubliners are quite possibly Celtic rock’s hardest work-
ing band, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans across the U.S. and Europe every year. In recent years the band has twice appeared on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, had songs featured in TV shows (Sons Of Anarchy, Human Target) and toured extensively as a headliner and as an opener for a diverse list of artists, including Collective Soul, Jethro Tull, Johnny Lang and many more .
Although Young Dubliners’ sound is most commonly called 'Celtic rock,' that label can be misleading. The Irish influence is decidedly there, but it's not the only influence that manifests in the band’s music . After all, several of the band members have no Irish roots of any kind .
"That was always the idea," explained lead singer Keith Roberts . "The sound was always intended to be a hybrid because we all come from different backgrounds . Even though two of us are from Ireland, a lot of the music we listened to growing up wasn't Irish at all . But when we got here, we became homesick and developed a new appreciation for Irish music . In truth, the Celtic riffs can just as easily come from the American band members . Everyone writes now so you never know what you’ll end up with .”
The band is currently in the midst of recording its ninth studio album . This will be a unique experience for the Young Dubs, as it plans to release the album independently for the first time. The Young Dubs plan to showcase much of the new material at upcoming shows . www.youngdubliners.com
One Ton Pig Famous for doling out down-and-dirty outlaw country, bluegrass and Americana, One Ton Pig is chick-en-fried-prison-music from Jackson Hole . If you're into Willie, Del or Johnny Cash, you're into the Pig! The band formed in 2006 and is best known for packing the Silver Dollar Bar in downtown Jackson every Tuesday night with its kinetic live shows . www.onetonpig.net
Thomas Sneed A member of the old-time band New Reeltime Travelers, Sneed is currently the director of Grand Targhee Bluegrass Camp and an old-time music historian, whose mandolin playing is featured in the film Cold Mountain . Sneed has made his mark at numerous musical festivals and venues, including the Grand Old Opry, Telluride Bluegrass Fes-tival, MerleFest, the Kennedy Center and the Down from the Mountain Tour, which featured music from the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou . www.targheemusiccamp.com

Steve Earle, a three-time Grammy award winner, is a protégé of legendary song-writers Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, and a master storyteller in his own right . Earle’s songs have been recorded by musical heavyweights such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, The Pretenders, Joan Baez and countless others . In 1986, his debut record Guitar Town soared to No . 1 on the coun-try charts and established the term ‘new
country .’ What followed was an exciting and diverse array of more than 20 releases, including Copperhead Road and most re-cently, I’ll Never Get Out of this World Alive and Low Highway .
I’ll Never Get Out of this World Alive is Earle’s 14th studio album and features the song “This City,” which garnered both Emmy and Grammy Award nominations . The album was released alongside Earle’s debut novel of the same name . The novel
imagines the troubled life of Doc Ebersole, haunted by the ghost of his former patient and friend, Hank Williams .
In April, Earle released Low Highway, the powerful follow-up to I’ll Never Get Out of this World Alive. Earle’s first album billed as Steve Earle & The Dukes (& Duchesses) provides listeners with a dose of poignant storytell-ing, Earle’s signature gritty vocals and the raw energy of The Dukes (& Duchesses).www.steveearle.com

Major ZephyrAfter three local musicians spent a month writing and re-
cording music at La Flora Estudio in Mendoza, Argentina, Major Zephyr was born . Jeff Eidemiller, Pete Muldoon and Marshall Davis comprise this energetic new Americana/alt country trio, which is guitar-driven and politically and philo-sophically charged .

Welcome to the inaugural Suds & Sounds Brew Fest
When Snake River Brewing's Auggie Katzer decided to bring together his two favorite
past times – craft beer and live music, Suds and Sounds Brew Fest was born .
Suds and Sounds will unite regional brew-ers and craft beer lovers with live music in a relaxed mountain setting . More than 20 craft breweries hailing from the Western
U.S. will pour more than 14 types of hand-crafted brews .
JacksonHoleLive invites you to sample beer and meet the brewers, while enjoying the summertime sounds of Robert Walter's 20th Congress .

American Pale AleTypically a deep gold color, these medi-
um-body session beers are made by nearly every craft brewery in the nation . The well-balanced malt-to-hop profiles make them desirable by the masses . Showcasing pin-ey citrus aromas, these ales are snappy up-front with a fruity mid-body and a dry finish. American pale ales pair well with spices commonly used in Mexican or Thai dishes . Brewmaster’s Table author Garrett Oliver said it best: "Great American Pale Ales taste the way a banjo sounds – vibrant, clear, with happy notes ."
Vienna LagerOriginally produced in the mid-1800s,
these reddish copper lagers are a summer-time treat . While their biscuit-sweet, bready aromas draw you in, the juiciness of the mid-body with minimal hop presence keep you coming back for more . These lagers are well rounded in the way that they start sweet and juicy, finish smooth and dry on your palate while the taste of fresh grains lingers. This specific beer style pairs nicely with barbecue and pizza, cutting through the fat while combining with the savory juices of both styles of food .
India Pale AleOriginally made for the East India Trade
Company's men stationed in Calcutta, IPAs maintain much more hop content than American Pale Ales . A true IPA should be gold to amber in color with a dry, resin-ous bouquet that offers a knifelike sharp-ness on your palate . While citrus grapefruit notes tantalize your taste buds, the "nose" of these ales reminds us of something we inhaled in college . Paired famously with Indian food as well as Thai curries, these beautiful big beers, "can be unbalanced but pleasantly so," says Oliver .
StoutThese unique beverages are widely
sought after, and widely discriminated against. There are more than five different kinds, from sweet milk stouts to foreign style stouts to Russian imperial stouts . All of these English ales have their place under the sun with robust flavor profiles of dark chocolate, coffee and even more unique flavors, like vanilla or espresso.
HefeweizenThis terrific ale is the finest example of
German engineering in the beer world . The light-bodied beer has very high carbon-ation levels to keep the notes of banana and clove dancing on your tongue . Spritzy in nature, but delicate in appearance, this style of beer should always be served with a "pillowed" head of foam piled on top of this hazy beverage that should be light yel-low, if not light orange, in appearance . Just like in Germany, in Jackson Hole this is a perfect breakfast beer that pairs famously with omelets and eggs benedict .
KolschOriginating in Cologne, Germany, this style
of beer is made for summertime indulgence . Its light, fruity flavor, minimal hop content and sweet malt dominance pair well with salads and delicate fish. This beer, according to Oliver, "is a lawn mower beer with flavor, it deserves a place in most refrigerators ."

A heavy dose of summer-time jazz-funk grooves
Robert Walter is an accomplished key-boardist and composer commanding the piano, Hammond B3 and Fender Rhodes . While touring extensively in the U.S. and Eu-rope, he has worked as a leader and sideman with many of the giants of American jazz and funk music . As a member of the Greyboy All-stars, he’s amassed a large and devoted fol-lowing . He also works as a session musician, recording and collaborating with a diverse group of artists and on many film scores.
Walter grew up in San Diego, Calif ., where he studied music from the age of 7 and be-gan performing in bands as a teenager . He helped form the Greyboy Allstars in 1993 with Karl Denson, Elgin Park, Chris Stillwell, Zak Najor and DJ Greyboy. Influenced by soul-jazz and funk records from the 1960s and 70s, the band juxtaposes jazz impro-visation and dance music and continues to record and perform to a committed fan base . The Greyboy Allstars also served as the band for Walter's first solo record, Spirit of ’70, which featured saxophonist and Miles Davis sideman Gary Bartz .
In the late 1990s Walter started his own group, Robert Walter’s 20th Congress, to showcase his composing . The band gained notoriety for its live performances and re-corded two albums, Money Shot and Giving Up the Ghost .
Robert Walter’s 20th Congress is currently touring in support of its latest album, Get Thy Bearings, slated for release June 25 . Walter will share the stage with Cochemea Gas-telum (Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings), John Spiece (drums, Grupo Fantasma), and Victor Little (bass, Booker T). www.robertwalter.com

Improvised strings from the yonder mountain
Best known for his role creating and per-forming in Yonder Mountain String Band, mandolinist Jeff Austin is unstoppable . He is celebrated for his fleet fingers and pen-chant for improvisation on stage . Austin has cultivated his natural musical abilities
and allowed himself to be driven by his boldest instincts . In this way, he has been able to build positive, exciting momentum around his life’s greatest passion .
With Yonder Mountain, Austin created, alongside musicians David Johnston, Adam Aijala and Ben Kaufmann, a wild, high-energy niche among the bluegrass legends of old and the up-and-coming jam band scene .
Now Austin is stepping into the spotlight as a solo act . “My ideal sound is between Phish, My Morning Jacket, and Zac Brown Band,” explained Austin, who will share the stage with Danny Barnes (Bad Livers), Eric Thorin (Matt Flinner Trio, Brother Mule) and Allie Kral (Cornmeal).

Family of the year
Cali indie rock clan sizzles with chemistry
Described by Steven Tyler as "The Mamas and The Papas on acid," Family of the Year is comprised of musicians who’ve formed unbreakable bonds . Cohabitating in a run-down house and relying on each other for inspiration and support, the group’s cama-raderie is palpable . It also doesn’t hurt that front man Joe Keefe and drummer Sebastian Keefe are real-life siblings .
Not surprisingly, many of the California outfit’s songs feature numerous voices, and more than a few include a chorus of joy-ous handclaps . Some songs sound like the group should sing 'em around the campfire while the s’mores are melting and the wine is flowing.
Family of the Year’s story began in 2009, when Joe assembled a band around the al-bum, Songbook, which he completed while decompressing from a five-year stint with Unbusted, the alt-rock trio he started in Bos-ton with Sebastian that gained notoriety for
its inclusion on the soundtrack Stuck On You. Instead of relying on the distortion of his past, suddenly pianos, horns, acoustic guitars, and other assorted instrumentation were being used to display a more sophisti-cated — yet equally as playful — indie-rock sound that brings to mind classic pop bands like The Smiths, The Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, and The Go-Betweens .www.familyoftheyear.net
