San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Announces New 2013
Shooting Event
The San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. (S.A.L.E.) is pleased to announce the addition of the first annual
“S.A.L.E. Junior Shoot Out” as part of the 2013 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The 100-bird youth trap
shoot will be held at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas, on February 8 - 9, 2013.
The competition will be open to 4-H and FFA students who are members of an organized 4-H shooting club or who
participate in the Ag Clays Program – a Texas Parks & Wildlife program that introduces clay target shooting to
FFA students who participate in agriculture, wildlife, fisheries and ecology management or science courses.
Scholarships and prizes will be awarded in several divisions/classes in this year’s competition. Among the classes
will be a Lewis Class division, which provides an opportunity for shooters of all skill levels to compete for awards.
“We are excited to host such a unique event. It will add a new dimension to our mission of emphasizing agriculture
and education to develop the youth of Texas,” says S.A.L.E. Executive Director & CEO, Keith Martin.
Sponsorship opportunities for this event are available. For more information, please call 210.225.0612 or email
S.A.L.E. officials are in the process of finalizing details of the event. As they become available, they will be posted
on the S.A.L.E. website (www.sarodeo.com).
The “S.A.L.E. Junior Shoot Out” will be a first-of-its-kind youth shooting competition in the United States held
in conjunction with a major stock show. Make plans now to attend this inaugural event.
In 2012, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo committed $10.1 million to education. This amount represents
scholarships, grants, endowments, junior livestock and western art auctions, a Calf Scramble program, and show
premiums paid to youth in the state of Texas. This brings the total amount that the organization has committed
since inception to over $123 million.
The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo is “a volunteer organization that emphasizes agriculture and education to
develop the youth of Texas.” For complete information on the 2013 Stock Show & Rodeo, visit www.sarodeo.com.

41st Annual Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Summer
Horsemanship School Program
The 2013 dates have been determined, and registration is now open for next summer! Register today to host a horsemanship school in your county! Youth, parents, and volunteer leaders are all welcome to join in the fun of rid-ing your own horse, enjoying good fellowship with like-minded people, and learning from the Aggie instructors.
Participants receive instruction on basic, intermediate, and advanced horsemanship skills and maneuvers and have the opportunity to practice them with guided instruction. Topics include the following maneuvers: rein aids, lateral movement (hip-in, side-pass, and two-track), collection, stopping, backing, rollbacks, turnarounds (spins), speed control, simple lead changes, and flying lead changes, along with other specialized events, short, interactive lectures, and games.
Overall, counties have been very pleased with the schools. Comments made about the schools include “Very good!”, “I am a big fan of these clinics for overall good, solid teaching.”, “Very competent and qualified instructors” and “We look forward to this school each year! It is a great program and has a great impact on riders of all ages. Thanks so much.”
Over the past 40 years, the program has reached 46,990 youth, parents, and volunteer leaders. A total of 1,344 schools have been conducted, and there have been 235 different college students who have served as instructors in the program.
For the amount of instruction given, the horsemanship schools are quite a bargain. More participants translate into a lower cost per rider. Below is a breakdown of the cost:
Two-day school – 16 hours of instruction Three-day school – 24 hours of instruction
30 riders - $43.33 per rider 30 riders - $51.66 per rider
20 riders - $65.00 per rider 20 riders - $77.50 per rider
10 riders - $130.00 per rider 10 riders - $155.00 per rider
It is highly suggested that counties recover the expense by dividing the fee among participants. Two-day schools are $1300, and three-day schools are $1550. A deposit of $300 will be requested upon registration, and the remain-ing balance will be due May 1st.

What is County Camp? County Camp allows counties to send youth who have completed grades 2-11 to
camp at the 4-H Conference Center at one time. Whereas Prime Time is age specific, County Camp is for
all ages. County groups are housed together in the dorms (by gender) unless it is specified differently on
the registration form. If you would like the youth from your county “spread out”, please let us know
ahead of time. Our goal is to fill the 4-H Conference Center to capacity each of the sessions of County
Camp. Therefore, counties are to designate which session they want to attend and an estimate of how
many participants they will bring. Final registration will be completed on Active Network. Please note,
a 5% late registration fee will be applied to all registrations received on or after June 14.
Who May Attend County Camp participants are defined as a youth who have completed 2nd through
11th grade. 4-H membership is not a requirement to participate in County Camp. Counties are responsi-
ble for providing adequate number of Adult Chaperones.
4-H Shooting Sports Coach Certification is mandatory for all
adults who will lead a 4-H Shooting Sports project. Coach certifications do not expire; they are good for the lifetime of the certified coach granted the certi-
fied coach meets 4-H eligibility requirements annually.
