Craig JacksonAuthoring in the Information AgeRadioLab5 March 2015Assignment 2: RadioLabFor this assignment, I recorded a RadioLab episode discussing the advancement of prosthetic limbs in modern medicine. I chose this topic out of sheer fascination with the ability to amputate and replace a limb. As I researched, I was fascinated with some of the changes currently taking place in this area of technology, specifically with people like Aimee Mullins developing limbs that stray from the human aesthetic. As you will hear, I began with an interview with David Sengeh, cutting his answers from a TED talk of his. He represents one realm of the future of prosthetics, specifically pushing for improvements to the comfort at the juncture between the old limb and the new. Next, I proceed to interview Aimee Mullins and Sophie de Oliveira Barata, both of whom talk about the concept of creating limbs that do not replicate the human aesthetic. Instead, they develop limbs that make a statement, whether that is a fashion statement or a statement of personal expression. In terms of audio editing, I cut all of the podcast guests answers out of TED talks (in the case of David Sengeh and Aimee Mullins) or a promotional video (Sophie Barata). I also included background music for much of the podcast, using Telephone and Rubber Band from Penguin Caf Orchestra and So What by Miles Davis. I also included a sword sound effect to highlight my early mention of pirates. Finally, I added Studio mastering reverb to my voice to make it sound cleaner. I also used a noise reducer to cancel the large room reverb for the TED talks, coupled with the same reverb used on my voice to mitigate the differences between my own recordings and those of the interviewees.
