Wish you a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New
Year
The Jingle of Christmas and tinkle of bells could be heard in the foyers of SNS, bringing alive the spirit of joy and cheer as one and all enjoyed being a Secret Santa.
Dear Students, Parents and
Grandparents,
This quarter has moved at an
amazing pace and each moment
across the cohorts seems filled with
energy, vitality and impact! In this
festive season let us not forget
those around us who need our help.
As we move from one year to the
next, each one needs to mindfully
remember to make a difference in
one person's life with our time,
effort and initiative:
#Let the children make
tea/soup daily for the guard
bhaiyas and didis in our
colonies to help keep their body
and hearts warm in the cold of
the night.
#Let the students help the
hired helps' children complete
their homework or teach them
something new like pottery,
paper stencilling, other art
work, drums, tabla, guitar or a
sport that is their Aha.
For we give little when we give
off our possessions to others but
we give a lot when we give
them our time❤
With happy wishes for a warm
Christmas and a caring New
Year.....

SEASON'S GREETINGS MESSAGE
MR PAUL D . HETHERINGTON
December 2018, Vol. 2
Head - Middle & Senior School
The highlight of my first four
months in school has been the
Middle and Senior Anandams.
The high quality of the
performances on stage have far
exceeded my expectations. I
would like to thank all the
students and staff for the hard
work that has taken place to
prepare the students and to
organize the events.
India is an amazing country! I
have started to explore the rich
culture and heritage in the NCR
region and I visited many
historical sights during my trip to
Jaipur. I have a very long list to
work through!
I wish everyone a very enjoyable
Christmas and a happy New Year.
Wish you and your family a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year 2019!
Christmas reminds us of little joys of
life, it is the time to reflect and thank
our blessings. May your Christmas be
full of magic, gifts and carols. May you
spread happiness and cheerfulness
around. MS . VANDANA VADERA
Head - Pre-Primary School
As we draw near the end of 2018, the whole school community
is looking forward to a well-earned rest. The prospect of
Christmas cheers us and lifts our spirits despite cold weather of
the season.
I arrived in India in August to join Shiv Nadar School which
now seems like a distant memory due to the welcome and
support I have received by staff, parents, and children. There
have been many high points and lots to celebrate- educational
visits, concerts and performances, sporting events, visiting
author workshops, poetry recitals, etc. and of course our
annual ‘Anandam’! This has all been in addition to our staff and
children working extremely hard in academic subjects.
I would like on behalf of all Primary staff in the school to wish
all of you a very happy Christmas with every best wish for a
prosperous and successful New Year. I look forward to
celebrating our school’s successes in the New Year as our
school moves from strength to strength.
Head - Primary School
MS . PRIYA NANDA
A warm Christmas welcome to everyone. The time has flown by
since I arrived in India to take up my role as Head of Middle and
Senior School. I would like to thank all the staff, students and
parents for making me feel so welcome. Our school is a vibrant,
dynamic and exciting place to be in. I have been extremely
impressed by the wide range of extra-curricular activities that
take place before, after and throughout the school day. Our
students are very talented, in both sports and the arts, it always
gives me great pleasure to award certificates of achievement in
assembly every week.
The pre-primary children discovered new and friendly ways to celebrate Diwali.
The young ones shared different ways of celebrating the festival, such as by decorating their
homes with lights, diyas and making colorful rangoli. They discussed how crackers cause smoke
that results in pollution. They all shared how much they dislike wearing masks!!
The posters made by them beautifully depicted their ‘Green’ thoughts. Their small size and age
did not deter them! They were seen carrying the ‘Green Diwali’ posters during the Green March,
passionately chanting the slogans 'Say No To Crackers' and 'Green Diwali, Safe Diwali'.
It was gratifying to see them spread awareness about the burning issue and zealously explaining
the repercussions of bursting crackers.
CELEBRATING DIWALI DIFFERENTLY!
THE TINY SEPOYS OF OUR ENVIRONMENT
Respecting our Rituals
A ‘Slogan Writing & Poster Making’ event was held in the middle school to help the students
appreciate the hazards of boisterous celebrations of Diwali that pose an irreversible threat to our
environment.
Despite a growing anti-cracker campaign, there is no dip in its popularity. The middle school
students discussed hazards caused by the firecrackers. Students joined the awareness drive and
got completely engrossed.
Every Change begins with a Small Step!
Our young adults have definitely taken a bold step to heal their environment.

The children were thrilled!
Magic show, bouncy castle, tattoo artists, different games they love, their favourite food on the

The primary teachers
wore the hats of
assembly anchors and
presented a special
assembly to celebrate
the occasion.
The teachers staged a
short skit, sang a
melodious song and
danced away to the
beats of their favourite
music.
The students were
overjoyed to see their
teachers in their new
avatars!
It was indeed a
memorable assembly
for the audience.
PRIMARY
On Thursday, 15th November, 2018 the
Nursery teachers invited the maternal
grandparents of a few students. In Hindi
maternal grandparents are addressed as
'Nana Nani', therefore it seemed only
befitting to invite them to introduce
the letter N in Hindi language. The 'Nana
Nani' shared many anecdotes and enjoyed
‘'Nashta' with the peers of their
grandchildren. The little ones gratefully bid
them goodbye sending them off with warm
hugs.
Mrs. Roshni Nadar
Malhotra and her team
from ‘The Habitats Trust’
visited the school on the
occasion of children’s
day.
The foundation works for
the conservation and
preservation of natural
habitats in India.
She shared how her
passion for nature has
helped her to make a
difference in protecting
our precious, much in
danger wild life.
Ms. Nadar reiterated on
the plight of wild
animals, especially tigers
and elephants in our
country and the need to
conserve our forests. The
team members
discussed the recent case
of ‘Avni’ who was killed,
not withstanding the
wildlife act. Ms. Nadar
urged the audience to
take a pledge, spread
awareness and not
participate in actions
that cause hurt to the
animals.

MIDDLE & SENIOR
The proposal of the Government to build a road through the
Aravali green area in Gurgaon sent a waves of tremor in our
community. Our young students decided to take the matter in
their own hands and addressed the burning issue. They made
banners, participated in protests on children’s day and conveyed
their concerns through letters to the Chief Minister of Haryana. In
their letters they requested Mr. M.L. Khattar to save the ‘Aravali
Biodiversity Park’ and not to destroy it for accommodating the
infrastructural requirements. Their efforts were not in vain as very
soon the State Government withdrew the proposed plan.

SPORTS DAY
‘Every champion was once a contender who refused to
give up.’ This thought represents the strong will,
determination, unceasing effort and perseverance of the
students of Shiv Nadar School who celebrated the much
awaited Annual Sports day- ‘The Surge of the Wildcats’ on
Friday, 16th November 2018. Excitement, zeal and
vivacious energy perfumed the air heavily. The program
commenced with a solemn welcome address followed by
lighting of the torch by the Sports Captain, Head Boy,
Head Girl and the House Captains who completed a
round with the ceremonial flame. After the Oath had
been administered by the Sports Captain, Cheshta Yadav,
Mr. Paul D. Hetherington, Head-Middle & Senior School,

BRIDGES ACROSS OCEANS:
INDO-AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
The year 2018-19 will always be remembered in the history of Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon as
the birth year to an international student exchange program in collaboration with Kirwan
High State School, Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
The journey started in March 2018 when 12 students of our school visited Kirwan High State
School. It was a 10-day program and students had a wonderful experience. Six months later,
from November 23 to December 01, 2018 we received students from Kirwan High State
School. This was a weeklong exchange program where our students served as hosts to their
buddies and reciprocated overwhelmingly. This exchange program fostered friendship,
understanding and a strong appreciation for different cultures within all students.
A special time table was culled
out for the Kirwan students to
make the most of their days
here in Shiv Nadar School.
Some highlights –
- An hour long stencil making
workshop on daily basis. These
stencils were their art pieces
which they carried home

AUTHOR VISIT
Ms. Richa Jha, who has authored
many books for the young readers
visited the school to interact with
the students of grades 1 and 2. She
shared the story of her picture book,
'The Manic Panic'. The story is about
the influence of technology in a
modern family and had all the
young ones empathizing with its
main character, a girl named Shivi.
The young readers remained eager
and posed numerous questions
related to the her book(s) and
characters.

Siddharth Singh
Author Siddharth Singh, an energy,
mobility and climate policy expert
addressed our senior school students
while talking about his book “The Great
Smog of India” on 26th November
2018. With clarity and compelling
arguments and a dash of irony,
Siddharth Singh demystified the issue
of Smog: where we are, how we got
here, and what we need to do now. He
discussed not only developments in
sectors like transport, industry and
energy production that silently
contribute to air pollution, but also the
'agricultural shock' to air quality
triggered by crop burning in northern
India every winter. He apprised our
students with the gravity of the
situation and requested them to get
involved: by responsibly taking part in
this mission as they are the future
generation. His concluding words-
“Ground-breaking and Heart-breaking
… this is our inconvenient truth” … left
us motivated to be the change we
want to see in our world!

SENIOR SCHOOL - EVENTS & WORKSHOPS
The OLE-Outbound Learning Experience is one of the most awaited experiences of a student’s
academic year. This year on 24th October, 2018, Grade-XI students embarked on an exciting
adventure to Beas Kund in Solang Valley, Himachal Pradesh. After an overnight journey filled
with songs, dances and conversations, we arrived at a scenic resort in Manali. Beginning with
an acclimatization trek, we were taken to Hadimba Devi Temple. The next day, packed in jeeps
we proceeded to the base camp where we were given a task of cooking the night’s dinner in
teams. The trek to Beas Kund next day was arduous and challenging and pushed most of us to
our limits both physically and emotionally. However, the breathtaking beauty of the lake and
the magnificent views all around made the effort seem absolutely worthwhile. Trekking back
through the steep slopes and rough moraines was equally tough but the thrill of completing it
made us feel like winners against the mountainous terrains. Once back in Manali, some team
building sessions took place wherein we realized the importance of working together to
accomplish tasks and following guidelines to achieve results. We even had a session where we
introspected our life’s most defining moments. After a few hours of shopping, we set on our
journey back home with our hearts filled with bittersweet moments, gratitude, joy and
memories to cherish for a lifetime.
