CONNECTING (CONNECT WITH GOD AND ONE ANOTHER)

Here in Durham, there are families who need our help: families without a place to live, families with young children, families in need.

Working together, we help provide families with children a stable, safe, and loving environment while they are in the temporary crisis of homeless-ness.

TOGETHER LAST YEAR YOU PROVIDED:

20,484 nights of shelter Served 152 children under the age of 18 (51% were aged 0-5) Served 76 families in the NEST (a core program that provides

temporary shelter) Served 83 families in branching out (an aftercare program providing a second phase of support after the guests move into their own home) Increased volunteer hours by 17% 2595 hours spent by the kids in children’s programming Exited 82% of families into permanent housing Zero recorded “no returns” to shelter within 12 months of program exiting

PROJECT AGAPE CHRISTMAS BOXES Project AGAPE, the unique mission of the NC Conference of the United Methodists with Christians in Armenia, provides Christmas shoeboxes for children. Armenia is the oldest Christian nation in the world. For many

children in refugee communities, this is the only Christmas gift they will receive. These boxes are a small gift containing a mighty message - the priceless love of Christ. Each year this mission has grown as more and more children participate. Each year the need for boxes exceeds the number of boxes available. We have been asked to help fill the need.

Because of strict customs and import laws, our shoeboxes must be filled only with items from a specific list— no substitutions and no additions. A copy of this list and instructions is in each of the empty plastic shoeboxes located on the table outside the sanctuary and in the foyer of the Family Life Center. Please do not wrap the shoeboxes or use cardboard boxes. Simply secure with a rubber band around the box.

We will collect the boxes beginning July 28, store them and take them to the collection point in Septem-ber. Our official dedication will be Sunday, August 25th. Feel free to br ing them in sooner and place them on or under the tables where the empty boxes are located. Please contact Charlotte O’Brien ([email protected] or 919-383-8734) with questions or concerns.

ALDERSGATE RAISED $3,483.00 FOR THE 2018 CROP WALK!

CONDUIT NEWS * Beautiful books galore came in after one week’s notice. Lee’s car trunk was filled! Many were given to the nearly 50 kids who attended the End-of-the-School-Year party on May 16th at Oxford Manor. With lots of prizes for Bingo and the active Bingo led by our own Kathy Grabowski, the pizza and the ice cream, the children had a great time. There were still a lot of books left that will be processed for CONDUIT’s Little Free Library in the community center at Oxford Manor. The plans for the summer include three different days for programs similar to what we’ve done monthly all year. We are going to try to use past VBS materials as a source of sto-ries, activities, and crafts. Please let one of your CONDUIT representative know if you are interested in help-ing with one of our programs. The reps are Holly Hogarth, Kathy Grabowski, and Lee King.

Marie and I really appreciate the service and wonderful lunch celebrating graduates. We are truly blessed to be a part of this church community. Love, Margie and Marie Muir

CONFIRMATION INVITATION We would like to invite students 7th grade and above to participate in our Confirmation program for the 2019-2020 school year. We will be holding Confirmation from October 2019 through May 2020 with appropriate breaks for holidays and such. We will meet during the Sunday School hour from 9:45-10:45. The leaders for this year are Rev. Eric Prenshaw, Lydia Cauley, and Rev. Bryan Faggart, along with a few other mentors and teach-ers from our congregation. If you are interested in serving as a Confirmation mentor, please let us know! In addition, we will have a required retreat on March 6-8, 2020, at Lake Junaluska. Please mark your calendars for this important date. We have tentatively set Confirmation Sunday as May 3, 2020. We will have an interest meeting in September to go over the Confirmation program and schedule in detail. So what is Confirmation? Confirmation is an opportunity to claim the promises that were made on your behalf in baptism. Through your baptism, you became part of God’s family in the body of Christ. But every Christian is called to make an individual and personal commitment to Jesus Christ and commit their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness to the church. At the time of your baptism, most of you were not old enough to be able to make this decision for yourself, but now you are able to own this commitment. For some, you may not have been baptized already. That is perfectly ok! If you have not been baptized, then you will be baptized as part of the Confirmation service. This commitment is a huge honor and responsibility. In fact, it is quite remarkable that the church trusts you with this decision at such a young age. While you have to be 16 to receive a driver’s license and 18 to vote, the church believes you are ready to make a commitment to Jesus Christ at an even younger age. Here at Aldersgate, we welcome youth from 7th grade and above to participate in Confirmation. We also know that not everyone will be ready to make this commitment and that is perfectly ok. In fact, in order to make this decision freely, you also have the freedom to say no. Confirmands, this is a decision between you and God, and we want this decision to be your own. We hope that this will be an enriching time in your life of faith and that you will hear God’s call to know and follow Jesus Christ in all that you do. If you are interested in participating as a student or as a mentor, please let us know. Also please feel free to ask us questions at any time. We are so excited about this! In Christ, Rev. Eric Prenshaw Pastor of Christian Formation [email protected] Lydia Cauley Director of Youth and Outreach [email protected]

IN DURHAM AS IT IS IN HEAVEN - Prayer Tour

Every week we pray the words that our Lord taught us: “thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” As a take on the Lord’s Prayer, I have a poster in my office that says “In Durham As It Is In Heaven.” If we pray for God’s will to be done on the earth, then certainly we are called to pray for God’s will to be done in our city. As Christians, each of us are called to be witnesses to the universal reign of God in our cities, neighbor-hoods, families, and workplaces. This poster reminds me that our faith should make a difference in the places we live, work, play, and make our home as the love, joy, hope, and grace of Jesus Christ transforms individuals and communities. I believe that we are called to be the embodiment of that prayer here in the city of Durham.

This summer, Rob Hogarth and Pastor Eric will lead a guided prayer tour of the city of Durham. We will travel to different locations and learn about the history, challenges, and opportunities facing our city. We will also offer prayer for the individuals and groups that are impacted at each location. In the process, we will pray for teachers and students in our schools, caregivers and patients in our healthcare facilities, those in prison and those who are being released, those facing poverty, injustice, and discrimination of all kinds, our business leaders and govern-ment officials, and all those living and working in our city. In the process, I pray that our eyes would be opened to the needs all around us as well as the joys to celebrate.

I believe that through our prayers, God is calling us to expand our vision of what mission can be. God is at work in the world and we are called to join in with God’s work in our neighborhoods and communities. I sincerely hope that you can join us on this journey. We will offer at least 3 or 4 different dates for the tour, and each tour has a capacity for 12 people. Stay tuned for the specific dates and how to sign up. Pastor Eric

11 LOVING (LOVE GOD THROUGH WORSHIP, AND LOVE OUR NEIGHBOR THROUGH SERVICE)

DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY has been a foundational Bible study for the United Methodist Church as well as other denominations. Pastor Bryan is inter-ested in leading a Disciple One Bible study in the fall.

This study requires a healthy level of commitment. It is a 34-week study over a period of a year. The class will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30 pm. This gives any who attend Wednesday evening dinner time for a quick meal and for those who remain for choir, it provides time for the Bible Study without committing to another night out during the week. The study will begin on Wednesday, September 18 and conclude Wednesday, May 27, taking meet-ing days off for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. There will be a short introduction to the curriculum on Wednesday, August 28, 6:45–7:30 pm. If you are interested in participating in this study or have any questions about it, please email [email protected].

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE

Although with the summer solstice in our rearview mirror and families are planning or enjoying summer vacations, your Stewardship Committee has been meeting to develop plans for a fall Stewardship Campaign that will be educational, engaging and energetic.

After Aldersgate regroups following Labor Day, Pastor Bryan will preach 2 sermons on stewardship (September 8 and 15). On September 22, we will welcome Belton Joyner to the pulpit. He will help us to bet-ter appreciate Apportionments, which is perhaps the least well understood part of our annual budget.

Something new in the campaign this year is the addition of a number of small group meetings at the church (see schedule below). At these meetings there will be opportunities to meet for education and fellowship with other members, some of whom you may not have met or don’t know as well because they attend the 8:30 service whereas you attend the 11:00 service or vice versa. The people of Aldersgate have a wonderful record of responding generously to specific tangible needs. Recent examples of this include giving for the new church organ or the new choir robes. However, giving to support something as vague or nebulous as an “Operating Budget” does not seem to generate the same degree of enthusiasm. In these meetings, you will have the chance to actually see what ministries your tithes and offerings support. We hope that having a better understanding of how our gifts affect the lives of other people both locally and around the world will increase your joy in giving.

SCHEDULE OF MEETINGS

September 10: one group at 11:45 am - Wesley Room September 11: two groups at 6:30 pm following the Wednesday Night Live meal – 1st: Wesley Room, 2nd: FLC 205 September 15: one group following 11:00 am worship – Wesley Room September 16: one group at 7:00 pm – FLC 205 September 19: one group at 11:45 (Prime Timers) Wesley Room and one group at 7:00 pm – Wesley Room September 23: one group at 11:45 am - Wesley Room September 26: one group at 7:00 pm - Wesley Room September 30: one group at 7:00 pm – FLC 205

We have consciously chosen to offer both midday and early evening times. Please review the schedule and decide upon a meeting date and time that works best for you.

Plans for other activities are still in progress. Stay tuned for updates as they become available and thanks for all you do as disciples.

If you are over 70½ and have a traditional IRA, you can direct your IRA administrator to make gifts to charity directly out of your IRA. Many people have found this to be a great way to support their church. The distribution is not income to the donor and there is no tax deduction, but it counts toward the donor’s Required Minimum Distribution. The new tax law does not change these rules, but this option may be even more attractive if you do not need a deduction.

Talk to your financial advisor to learn about this option. Tax deductions vary based on a variety of factors that may change and that may pertain to your unique situation.

SUMMER MUSIC @ AUMC

The choir will take a bit of a break for the summer, leading music in worship only about once a month from the loft. That doesn’t mean that other Sundays will be silent! I am looking for soloists, trios, quartets, instru-mentalists, and small groups to share their musical gifts in worship over the summer. If you might be inter-ested in singing or playing an instrument in worship, please contact Henry Branson at [email protected].

BELL PLAYERS NEEDED

Have you ever thought about trying out handbells? If so, the Joyful Noise Ringers are looking for new mem-bers to join in the Fall of 2019! We have lots of fun together and love to share our sounds in worship! Basic music literacy is helpful, but not required. The Joyful Noise Ringers rehearse on Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 in the sanctuary. Please contact Henry if you would like to learn more.

CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST

STARTING IN AUGUST, the AUMC Chancel Choir will begin rehearsals on our Christmas Program! If you would like to participate in this program (a great way to get your feet wet by singing in the choir), please contact Henry for more details. We would love to welcome you to the loft!

GROWING (GROW AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST AND AS A FAITHFUL COMMUNITY CALLED THE CHURCH)

THE COMPASSION FUND * Offerings to The Compassion Fund are always appreciated. These funds are used to help the poor and needy, inside our church as well as the community. The fund helps to pay the rent or utilities or purchase food for some-one in need. To donate to this fund, just mark PCF on the memo line of your check, and our pastor will distribute these funds as they are needed. Giving to others always enriches our own lives.

“For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.”

June Offerings:

Income $340,398.

Expenses $335,408.

Net Income $4,990.

Trustees are Christian stewards of the property God has entrusted to the congregation. Effective trustees supervise and maintain the property of the congre-gation to ensure that disciple-making ministries of the congregation are effective and that local legal requirements related to the property are satisfied.
