Jonathan JenkinsCurriculum Vitae

About me:I am a third year transportation design student at Northumbria University. I have possessed a keen interest in becoming an automotive designer from a young age and hold a passion for cars and engines which I believe to have developed from riding a steam train as a child. I have studied cars throughout my education. In my opinion it is not only a cars looks that make it beautiful, it is the history behind it and the love and passion that has gone into designing and manufacturing it.

Skills:>Extensive model making skills using hand tools and a variety of workshop machinery. Also using materials such as modelling foam, plastic, wood and metal.

>Sketching and rendering using mixed media.

> Working knowledge of CAD using software such as: Alias, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketchbook Pro, Sketchup and Rhino.

Qualications:(College)>Edexcel level 3 BTEC National Diploma in 3D design (triple distinction)

>Edexcel BTEC level 1 certicate in supporting employability and personal eectiveness

>Edexcel functional skills qualication in English at level 1

>NCFE functional skills qualication in Mathematics at level 1

>AQA functional skills level 2 information and communication technology

>Edexcel level 2 award in digital applications (merit)

(Work)>Level 2 award in door supervision

(University)>I am currently studying for a degree in Transportation Design

I also have 12 GCSEs grade A to B including an A* in Art and Design

Hobbies:>Learning the basic mechanics of a car by xing problems under the bonnet of my own car and reading up on the subject.

>Spending time with friends and training in the gym.

>Fishing, camping and walking in the countryside.

Experience:At sixteen years old I completed a short period of work experience with RLE International; an international automotive design company. During this time I travelled to the Midlands and visited other companies such as Aston Martin where I witnessed their vehicles being produced. I also visited a company called Premier Sheet Metal where I saw body structures of other vehicles such as Bentleys. I was given an introduction to CAD and also shown how to successfully complete vehicle perspective drawings. I was involved in meetings with company management and witnessed behind the scenes discussions surrounding the design process.

During my 2nd year at University, I spent 14 weeks working at a car manufacturing company called Gestamp. I worked in the quality department where I was responsible for testing car parts for BMW, Nissan, General Motors and Jaguar to ensure they met specication. There is more information on this placement and photographs in my portfolio.

I have had various jobs to fund my studies including bar work, event promoting, waitering and door supervision.

Michelin 2013by Jonathan Jenkins

I entered the 2013 Michelin competition. The brief was to design a vehicle which could be used in cities in 2020 however the vehicle had to have

autonomous mode and manual mode. I designed the vehicle to be used by a person who travels through densely populated cities on a daily basis but also

enjoys driving on the open road.

Creating an iconby Jonathan Jenkins

One of my university project briefs was to re-design the New York taxi. Research showed me that the main issues are the lack of wheelchair accessibility and the new

taxi is neither bold or iconic in design. I decided the taxi would be a collaboration between Chevrolet and Nissan. Branded

Chevrolet however built on the chassis of Nissans new eNV200 van for environmental reasons.

BMW city carby Jonathan Jenkins

I wanted to design a car that would be small enough to be suitable for the mega cities of the future. I also wanted the owner to be able to travel and sleep in the

car to save money on ights, hotels or renting other cars.

Michelin 2014by Jonathan Jenkins

The brief for the 2014 Michelin competition was to design a vehicle for a chosen road. The vehicle also had to have unique ideas to engage the drivers senses.

I chose the Col de Turini and began my research by looking into the people who go on journeys purely for the thrill of driving, then I built a user prole. I wanted the driver to

feel like they were the heart of the machine which is the way motorcyclists describe the feeling they experience.

Land Roverby Jonathan Jenkins

As a project aside from my university work, I decided to study a brand design language and create a new design in the same style. I chose to look at Land Rover and explored

the companies design philosophy. Following my research, I started to sketch some initial ideas for a new car to add to their Range Rover eet.

Automotive manufacturing experience (Gestamp)by Jonathan Jenkins

As part of my placement job in Gestamp’s quality department, my main role was to measure and check parts to ensure that they met specication. I operated a CMM measuring machine and portable CMM handy probe to measure parts for BMW,

Nissan, General Motors and Jaguar. I was also introduced to ultrasonic weld testing to check the quality of spot and mig welds and used the electronic stethoscope to listen

for imperfections in the movement of brake pedals.

House renovationby Jonathan Jenkins

I was part of a group renovating a house. My main duty was to communicate my own and other’s ideas throughout the design process until we settled on a nal design. Then I used my nal Photoshopped images and CAD drawings to translate our nal design to

an architect so he could complete the technical drawings to be sent to the council’s planning department.

Military vehicleby Jonathan Jenkins

I worked as part of a team on a project for Hyperdrive. I was involved in all aspects of the vehicle however I was in charge of the interior. We decided to come up with a vehicle with legs so that it could transport troops through a mine eld safely and stealthily. The legs would make

mines avoidable and make tough terrain easier to climb. As a military vehicle, materials and functionality were far more important than aesthetics.

Bird Feederby Jonathan Jenkins

During my rst year at university, I worked with Cranswick Pet Products to design a new bird feeder. During my research I found that there weren’t many feeders which blended in with their surrounding environment so my objective became to design a product inspired

by nature
