J. C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad (erstwhile YMCA

University of Science and Technology, Faridabad erstwhile YMCA Institute of Engineering,

Faridabad) was established in the year 1969, as a joint venture of the National Council of

YMCAs of India, Govt of Haryana, and the Central Agencies for Development Aid, Bonn,

Germany. It started as an Indo-German project with an aim to impart technical education to

a developing India on German pattern.

The labs & workshops have been setup with the assistance of German expertise. In

1996, State Govt. of Haryana took complete control of the Institute and upgraded it to

University status in Dec. 2009. The university offers 4-year B. Tech degree course in seven

disciplines

The university has added new chapters in it’s glorious history i. e. M.B.A., M.C.A,

M.Tech. (Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering &

Mechanical Engineering), M.Sc. (Physics, Maths, Chemistry & Environmental Sciences),

M.A.(Mass Communication and Journalism) and Ph.D.

The competence of the University has been recognized at various levels by the

amongst State Engineering Universities in Haryana), etc.

The Department of Chemistry, established in 2016, is one of

the newly constructed departments of the J. C. Bose

University of Science and Technology, YMCA and is

committed to research and teaching since its inception. The

department started Master’s in Science (Chemistry) 2-year

programs in 2016 and immersed with Ph. D. programs in

2017, and B. Sc. Chemistry (Hons.) in 2018 and also obligated to core courses in Chemistry for

undergraduate B. Tech. students. The objective of Chemistry department is to equip students with

techniques and skills so that they can contribute to achieving innovative and indigenous solutions

to scientific problems related to our society. The faculty members of the department are dedicated

to quality teaching and research. At present, faculty and students are engaged in a range of dynamic

research programs that include organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry,

theoretical and computational chemistry and others. The Department has a dedicated team of

faculty members trained at renowned institutes in India and abroad. This growing department

with young faculty offers a vibrant atmosphere to nurture the spirit of scientific inquiry.

III. Research Thrust Areas of the Department:

The department overall has expertise in all core areas of chemistry such as organic, inorganic,

physical and polymer/computational chemistry, and experience in multi-disciplinary areas which

Research Areas/interest: During PhD course, my research was mainly focused on bioorganic field as well as mechanistic study in organic chemistry in general. We developed carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and antimicrobial as well as anti-inflammatory agent in particular in the medicinal area of my research. Since the discovery of carbonic anhydrases, targeting their tumor associated isoforms hCA IX and XII selectively over hCA I and II has been considered as a promising strategy in treatment of cancer. We have designed and synthesized some sulfonamide based heterocyclic scaffolds exhibiting moderate to excellent inhibition profile against hCA IX and XII. Synthesis of all the target compounds was purely done by us in our laboratory while their biological testing was performed by our collaborators. Apart from this work, we have also developed some facile and efficient methodologies for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds as well as their precursors.

VI. Department Infrastructure:

The chemistry department has adequate office and faculty office space, classrooms and laboratories

for conducting practical’s in all specializations such as organic, inorganic, physical and theoretical

chemistry in new Science Block (8/9th Floors). Department is under process of purchase of several

advanced equipment’s such as FTIR spectrophotometers and powder XRD. Moreover, HPLC,

Fluorimeter and setup of computational facilities are in due process, in order to conduct advanced

doctoral and post-doctoral research.
