204 I DIGEST OF STATISTICS 2013-14
IX-LIVESTOCK, SHEEP AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
9.0 The rearing of livestock is a very critical and core activity in the economic profile of the state.Although it is adopted as a subsidiary occupation by majority of the rural population, yet it constitutesa vital activity from the stand point of the economic welfare of the farmers. Moreover, the nomadic, gujjar and bakeral population depend exclusively on sheep rearing for its livelihood. Live stockactivity has a contribution of about 11% in the Gross Domestic Product of the state. It offers promisingemployment opportunities and handsome economic returns especially in rural mountainous areasof the state. Most of the livestock population, particularly sheep have been transformed into highquality by using latest insemination techniques and through improved quality livestock importedfrom other countries. Still a good portion of livestock is local and of inferior quality which needsimprovement in both quality and quantity. Various steps are being taken to improve the quality andquantity of livestock.
9.1 The source of livestock data is the livestock census which indicates figures by district and also bytehsil. It may however, be pointed out that bulk of our livestock population is migratory and isrecorded on de-facto basis. The district and tehsil wise breakup, therefore, is not of much relevanceand has only academic interest.
9.2 This chapter presents data on the number of livestock, poultry, functioning of livestock/sheep breedingcenters/farms, health coverage, provided to the livestock etc. in 11 no. tables.
9.3 Live stock census 2007 has recorded live stock population of the state to be 1.79 crores whichconsist of 19.23% cattled and more than 23.05% sheep. Table No. 9.00 of this chapter presentsspecie-wise live stock population thrown out by quinquennial live stock censuses in J&K State. However, district wise breakup of live stock as per latest live stock census 2007 also appears inthis table.
9.4 Table No. 9.07 presents information on the number of poultry birds collected through quinquenniallive stock censuses from 1972 to 2003.
9.5 Table No. 9.10 provides estimated livestock population by category and poultry birds as per integratedSample Survey of major livestock products for the years 2005-06 to 2011-12 with district wisebreakup for 2011-12 figures.
