LabScribe2 Software

LabScribe2 software is a powerful recording and analysissoftware package offered by iWorx. LabScribe2 has anintuitive, user-friendly interface for setting up acquisitionscreens, calibrating signals and analyzing data. Up to 128channels of data can be displayed simultaneously at samplingrates as high as 100,000 samples/second.

A comprehensive set of analysis routines have beenpreconfigured making data analysis and interpretation quickand easy. Specific analysis modules for cardiovascularresearch are available to analyze pressure signals, blood flowdata, ECG recordings, ventricular pressure-volume loops andsonomicrometry dimension data.

LabScribe2 includes a scripting function for use if the built-inanalysis tools fall short of what is required for your application.Scripting languages currently supported include: Dadisp,Python, MatLab, LabView, and C++.

Features

DisplayLabScribe2 software displays data through a customizable,user-friendly, and intuitive interface. The number of input andcomputed channels, the display time, and scaling of the X andY axes are just a few of the parameters that can be saved to aviewing template. Simply click one button to change from oneview to another.

Real-time Online CalculationsMonitor and observe functional parameters during anexperiment with an array of real-time calculations and user-defined computed channels. Labscribe2 software cancalculate rates, min/max/mean values, systolic/diastolic valuesas well as derivatives and integrals in real-time. A uniquechannel math function allows users to create their ownformulae for viewing signals in real-time.

Data ReductionData can be analyzed and reduced in the Analysis window.Selections of data can be averaged and written to theLabScribe2 Journal or directly to a text file. For example, thesoftware can be instructed to break a file up into five-minutepieces, determine the average heart rate for the data in eachsegment, and write those values to a report.

LabScribe2 interface showing data being acquired in real-time.

Changing how data is displayed can easily be accomplished by

setting up different views.

Data can be saved for several hours in one file. Marks can be entered

to easily navigate to specific time points for data viewing and

reduction.

LabScribe2 Software

Complex mathematical calculations are available for analyzing any

cardiac signal. Examples include some of the pressure-volume loop

algorithms included with LabScribe2.

Real-Time AnnotationsMark data during an experiment with free-form text notes. These marks are searchable and appear in the field of data towhich they apply. Marks are time locked to the record and canbe used to “Go To” any marked region of the data. Marks canbe preset and assigned as keyboard shortcuts for quick andeasy annotation.

Advanced AnalysisSpecific time points and features of a signal can beAutoMarked for further analysis and validation. For example, the ECG AutoMark feature will place marks at the Q, R, S, T,and P waves. The blood pressure AutoMark will place marks atsystolic and diastolic points, dichrotic notch and max/min dP/dt.

XY WindowAny two channels can be displayed in XY format, online oroffline. LabScribe2 software supports area measurements andsegment slopes from such plots. And, of course, you can savethe plots as pictures or text.

Settings filesSettings files can be created for different experimental protocols. The number of input channels, calibration parameters, graph settings, computed channels, views andanalysis protocols are all saved to a settings file.

FFT analysisLabScribe2 includes a Fast Fourier Transform feature for frequency analysis of any signal.

Input/OutputLabScribe2 supports various pacing and stimulation protocolswith a built-in stimulator interface which allows delivery of a single, continuous, or train of pulses. Pulse durations, frequencies and amplitudes can be changed as the protocol isbeing delivered. The software also offers full control of digitalI/O lines that can be used to count events, or control devices inthe lab environment.

ExportAll recorded data can be exported to either a text file or a picture (.png, .jpg) making reports or posters much easier tocreate. Of course, you can always print your data from anywindow at any scale.

ImportAn optional import module is available so that data acquiredfrom other acquisition systems can be analyzed withLabScribe's powerful analysis routines.

Data from Automarks are sent to the journal from where they can be

exported easily to Excel or another analytical program for further

analysis.

FFT analysis can be performed on any signals. For example, heart

rate variability can be calculated using either ECG or Blood pressure

from this menu.

Proper assessment of cardiac function and hemodynamicperformance requires a measurement of pressure from withinthe heart and the peripheral arteries. iWorx offers severalsolutions for measuring pressure including fluid-filled pressuretransducers, catheter-tipped micro pressure sensors and non-invasive tail cuff pressure systems.

Systems and Components

Fluid-Filled Catheter TransducerThe BP-100 blood pressure transducer is an economical andaccurate device used to measure direct arterial or venouspressure in animals using the fluid-filled transducer technique.A precision laser-trimmed chip provides accurate and linearmeasurements over a broad range of pressures. Pressurechanges in the vessel are transmitted within the fluid-filled tubeto the pressure transducer and acquired for monitoring andfurther analysis. Tubing is available as small as 1 mm in outsidediameter making this technique well-suited for measuringpressures in very small vessels.

Catheter-Tipped TransducersiWorx offers catheter-tipped solid-state pressure catheters insizes ranging from 1.2F to 1.6F. These catheters arerecommended for measuring pressure in small vessels as wellas ventricular pressures in small rodents. Solid-statetransducer-tipped catheters offer superior sensitivity andtemporal resolution compared to fluid-filled catheters and aregenerally more suitable for measuring intra-cardiac pressuresfrom animal species with high intrinsic heart rates.

Non-invasive Blood PressureInvasive measures of pressure are not always possible and, asa result, there is a need for non-invasive methods to detectpressure. The most widely accepted technique for animals isthe tail-cuff method.

iWorx offers the IITC noninvasive blood pressure systems formice and rats. The IITC Life Science amplifier with built-ininflation outputs systolic pressure, mean pressure, diastolicpressure and heart rate as analog signals which can beacquired by iWorx data recorders. Systems include the amplifierwith built-in cuff pump, sensor and restrainer, cables, sphygmomanometer and accessories. Warming chambers areavailable so that no heating pads are required.

The cardiac cycle involves a sequentialcontraction of the atria and ventricleswhich is triggered by the coordinatedelectrical activity of the myocardial cells inthe heart. These electrical currents can berecorded non-invasively through electrodesproducing what is known as anelectrocardiogram or ECG. The ECG canbe measured in 3 dimensions by looking atthe electrical signals from different viewsor leads. iWorx offers complete systemsfor humans and animals to study ECG insome of the most common leadconfigurations - 3 lead ECG, 6 lead ECG,12 lead ECG.

Isolated Heart Preparations

Record and AutoMark LDEVP, systolic and diastolic from a blood pressure curve, sending the

calculations to the journal and a spreadsheet file in real-time.

The isolated perfused heart system, asoriginated by Oscar Langendorff more thana century ago, has become a mainstay ofpharmacological and physiologicalresearch. The system allows theexamination of cardiac inotropic (cardiaccontractile strength), chronotropic (heartrate), and vascular effects without thecomplications of an intact animal model. The original design has evolved toencompass both constant pressure andconstant flow models in recirculating ornon-recirculating modes, as well asworking heart models. iWorx providestransducers, accessories and dataacquisition hardware and software to beused in any of these configurations.

Working Heart

PacingFor pacing the heart during a Langendorffpreparation, the built-in digital stimulator ofan iWorx data acquisition unit can be used.iWorx stimulators have very flexiblecontrols, which even allow real-timechanges in stimuli parameters to be made(with the touch of a button) throughLabScribe2 software.

Force, Pressures, Flow, and VolumesContractile forces, pressures, flow, andvolumes can be measured using anycombination of recording electrodes,strain-gage transducers and amplifierswhich are available from iWorx. K+, Ca2+,Cl- and pH can also be measured directlyfrom the perfusate by using electrodesconnected to an iWorx signal conditioner.O2 consumption can be measured byplacing an O2 electrode in the inflow andin the effluent and calculating thedifference in concentration.

ECGElectrocardiograms can also be recordedfrom the isolated heart using electrodesconnected to any of our low noisebiopotential amplifiers.
