The authority to solemnize weddings in civil ceremony has been vested in both execu·

tive and judicial officers at times, but the recording of such weddings and the preservation

of the records by local government was uncommon in New York State until relatively

recently. Papers of most officials were considered to be their personal property and re­mained in their custody when they left office, whereafter their preservation or destruction

became a matter of luck and personal whimsey.

Gideon Lee as Mayor of New York City from 2 January 1833, to 13 May 1834, solemnized

a number of weddings which were recorded in a copybook. The book remained in Lee's

possession after he left office, eventually passing with other papers from his descendants to

it manuscript dealer. The Record of iUarriages, as it is entitled, has been located among.the collection of Gideon Lee Papers recently acquired by the New York State Library in

Albany. Twenty weddings performed by Gideon Lee are listed. The records, including

the copies of signatures, are all in the same handwriting, which is easily deciphered

except that in a few instances the capital letters Land S are virtually identical in appear­ance.

In each entry the Mayor states that the marriage partners "were satisfactorily proven

to me to be the persons described ... tha t they are of sufficient age to contract Marriage

and ... there appeared no lawful impediment to such Marriage." The following abstractsinclude all the information concerning the marriage partners and witnesses which is given

in the regis ter.

188. Johns Devereux was born Dec.,t!f 1819;-:CinRaleigh, N. c., anddied there April 10, 1893. For his preliminary education he was sentnorth to the Round Hill Academy at Northampton, Mass., and laterentered Yale College from which he was graduated in 1840. On the deathof his grandfather john Devereux in 1844, he inherited a large planta­tion called Runeroi in Bertie County, which was part of the originalPollock Crown grant. Like many other southerners he was first opposedto Secession, but when it became inevitable he gave himself, heart andsoul, to the cause of the Confederacy. In May 1861 he was sent by Gov.·john VV. Ellis to purchase supplies in the eastern counties; later thatyear he was commissioned staff captain and assistant quartermaster andeventually became Quartermaster-General of the state. Throughout theentire period of the Civil 'Var he acted as quartermaster of the NorthCarolina troops with the rank of Major and he became a close friendof Gov. Zebulon B. Vance who held office from 1862 to 1865, and theyworked in hearty accord.

As was the case with other families, theinherited properties of the Devereux family passed into other hands; thedikes along the Roanoke River were neglected so that the country wasexposed to constant flooding, with the result that these once rich farm

lands became a marshy waste, as they are today. After the "Var MajorDevereux engaged in the general insurance business in Halifax County,but still maintained his home in Raleigh as his business took him tomany parts of the state. On May 25, 1842, he married there ;\Iargaret

Moses3 Mordecai read law with George Fitts, Esq., and settled inRaleigh where he became one of the most able lawyers in North Caro-lina. He was married twice, his wives being sisters; the first was MargaretLane, and the second Anne ·Willis Lane, children of Henry Lane andMary Hinton. The latter was a daughter of john Hinton of Clay Hill

on the Neuse River. The father of Henry Lane was Col. Joel Lane whoremoved from Halifax County to vVake County, prior to the Revolution.The latter was one of the wealthiest and best known men in the stateof North Carolina, being a member of the Provisional Council whichmet at Hillsboro Aug. 21, 1775, and a State Senator from Wake Countyfor several terms. He bu:It a house on what is now Hillsboro Street in

Raleigh, and in which the General Assembly met in 1781. Col. Lane, onApril 4, 1792, com-eyed 1,000 acres ofland to the state of North Caro­lina,_immediately-contiguous-to_his_home,_at_vV ake-Gourt-House,-as-the---­spot was then known, and upon this land the present capital city ofRaleigh now stands. i\Iajor John Devereux and his wife, MargaretMordecai had two sons and six daughters:

'Villiam Thorne's share is shown elsewhere as "Laid out to the Patent

acquired by 'William Thorne under patent rights was about 158 acres(Ibid.:427, 494).

On Oct. 3, 1681, William Thorne signed with his own hand a requestby John Lokison for a "peace of Commons" (Ibid.:) :479 & Rec., v. 91,p. 66). He had evidently learned to write; but thereafter his wife 'Vin­nifred, his son vVilliam3, and his daughter Elizabeth3, as will presentlyappear, all signed with the same mark "VV" that 'William Thorne had

~<subscribed to the Flushing Remonstrance.~ On July 21, 1682, Thomas Whitlock of Westchester assigned to 'Yil­

liam Thorne of ".Mad nans Neck" a parcel of meadow in Westchesterwhich he had bought from Thomas Vaile, and in a separate assignmentof the same date released two hummocks of meadow he had bought fromJohn Jennings. These instruments were recorded March 18 and 20,1698/9, respectively (Westchester Co. Deeds:B:395-96). On May 20, 1683,Edmund Titus conveyed to "\Vill Thome of Mad nans neck" a "lott ofland on the east side of said neck in number fifty-nine and in quantityof acres thirty three as it was at the first layd out by the surveyors soappointed." As recorded on July 8, 1699, the deed is to "Wilt Thorne,"

The first three persons are readily identified as 'Villiam Thorne, hiswife, and son Richard. vVilliam vVood, who has not been identified, mayhave been a relative, but just as probably an apprentice or hired man.The three Motts were a son-in-law, daughter, and their first child. Thefive Thomes at the top of the second column were vVilliam Thorne'seldest son vViIliam, the latter's wife, and their three small children. Ofthe remaining, Mary DanelIs, who signed the release to John Treadwellnoted above as "0 'Widow Daniell her mark," appears to have been thehead of a household comprising herself and three Thomes, one of whom,

Our English inheritance of irrational spelling and legal verbosity ap­pears to have crossed the ocean with the earliest settlers. But perhaps theNew York Dominie and the Hempstead Town Clerk spelled 'VinnifredThorne's name very much as she pronounced it.

On April 26, 1685, "vVilliam Thorne: Se:" registered an earmark forhis livestock (Ibid.:2:II5), and on July II, 1691, with many others,signed a petition for John Stuard who was "willing to settle amonghtsyou to follow ye tread of a coper as alIso to practis ye art of Sergery" and"very Redy and willing to Serve you in Ether of ye arts afore sd" (Ibid.:110).

On June 7, 1697, "'lYe whose names are here under written do giveour consente that John Treadwell Senr. shall have liberty to joyn hisland he bought of Slidwell to the land that was formerly John Hickes."The document is signed by a number of residents of Madnans Neck, in­cluding William Thorne, "Richard Thorne his mark", vVilliam ThomeJunr and "IT John Thome his mark" (Queens Co. Deeds:B:396).Richard Thorne and 'Villiam Thorne, Ju., as shown below, were sonsof William Thorne. No doubt John Thome was a son also.

Thomas Bedient(pf 'Vestchester sold to "Samuel Ward, late of Fair­field," a house and a house lot containing nine acres at Eastchester,

together with "one acre of meadow in the ;Pines" (Westchester Co.Deeds:B:380). -Eastchester is on the mainland dinlctly across LongIsland Sound from Flushing and Hempstead. Formerly a village inWestchester County it has now'been absorbed in part into the Boroughof the Bronx, New York City.

On Dec. 27, 1698, Samuel Ward of Eastchester and Hannah his wife

sold the property, referred to above, to Joseph Drake (lbid.:397). OnFeb. II, 1698/9, William Chadderton of Eastchester sold to SamuelWard "a peece of upland at a place commonly called Little Ease" inEastchester, containing ten acres (lbid.:391). On March 13, 1698/9,William" Thorne no. 7, as previously stated, quitclaimed to "mybrother Samuel Ward of Eastchester" a meadow in \Vestchester, which

appears from the description to have been the property which ThomasWhitlock assigned to William" Thorne no. 2, in 1682. As previously'noted,..,!he origin~ment~s_nQtJe.corded_up.til_March_18,_1698/9, -and the quitclaim to Samuel Ward was entered two days later. PossiblyWilliam" Thorne, as the eldest son and heir, was settling the estate of

his father, who may have recently died, and was clearing title to landthe latter may have transferred to his son·in·law Samuel "\-Vard,or tohis daughter Hannah.

Several other land transactions in which Samuel "\-Vardand his wife

were both involved are recorded in Westchester County Deeds during

the next several years. By the last, on May I, 1705, without a wife'ssignature; Samuel Ward of Eastchester sold to Edmund 'Yard (hisbrother), of the same place, "all that my 5 acres adjoining" the latter'sproperty (lbid.:378). Presumably Hannah (Thorne) Ward died beforethe above date. Samuel 'Yard docs not appear in the New York CityCensus of 1703, but the "one female" in the. household of John Thorne

no. 8 may have been the latter's sister Hannah, rather than his mother.Samuel Ward is said to have died in 1'706 (Fams. of Old Fairfield, v. I,

pp. 647-48).The family of Samuel Ward appears in the Eastchester Census of

He likewise made bequests to the children namedbelow, except Margaret and Richbell, who presumably had died; pro­vided for the sale of the home farm, and the distribution of £600 ofthe proceeds among the children; and directed that the "Irish servantboy, David, is to have at the end of his term, a good homespun suit ofapparell, besides his everyday clothes, and a narrow axe ... and I wouldhave my son Richard instruct him as far as he can in his learning."Four gTandsons were made residuary legatees: Richbell, son of Adam
