Dear Reader
Welcome to our new catalogue, we are very happy to show you what we’ve been working on. At Ivy Press we love to explore the topics that fascinate us, from practical and creative titles for both children and adults to popular science, reference, natural history and conscious living. Whatever the subject, each individual book flourishes under our careful attention to editorial, design and production detail.
We are delighted to introduce Owls to our natural history list – packed with stunning photographs and profiles of every single species; this book also includes a life-size foldout. Skeletons also features this season, full of exquisite engravings and illustrations in an intriguing and readable look at the bones that underpin the structure of every kind of vertebrate life.
Our Fashion Details title is presented in a fabulous new reissue, combining the works of classic 19th-century illustrators with authoritative text in this wonderful, timeless study of style through the ages.
From Ivy Kids, we bring you the follow-on from our bestselling This is Not a Maths Book… This is Not a Science Book! Packed with engaging activities, these books are so much fun that children won’t even realise they are learning as they play, draw and make. Another title we are very proud of – Sticker, Shape, Create – is the first in our new series of art activity books. This is packed with more than 1,500 basic sticker shapes you can arrange and then embellish with your own drawings to make everything from birds and cityscapes to fireworks and hot-air balloons – in fact, anything you can imagine.
We look forward to you enjoying our books and, as ever, welcome any comments or feedback you might have.

✤ Written by a world-renowned expert on stress
✤ Explains the known physical consequences of experiencing nervous tension
✤ Considers resiliency and other logical solutions to managing dierent types of stress
Thirty-three per cent of Americans and thirty-five per cent of British people feel they are living with extreme stress. One in five Germans experiences stress on a regular basis, and workplace stress costs the Australian economy 14.2 billion dollars annually. Stress is a global pandemic, increasingly proven to be a precursor to diseases such as ulcers, depression and obesity. The Science of Stress explains the current understanding of stress in a concise summary. From why some stress is useful to understanding fear and explaining voodoo death, this book leads the reader through the many ways stress responses affect us.
Gregory Fricchione MD is one of the world’s leading stress experts. On the faculty of Harvard Medical School, he is Director of the Division of Psychiatry and Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has authored several books, including Compassion and Healing in Medicine and Society (2011). In 2006 he became Director of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, one of the top five research institutes for stress-related illness in the US.

Viruses are the last frontier of undiscovered life on our planet. The most abundant type of organism on Earth, they infect all types of cellular life and, as micro-organisms that cause disease in their hosts, they are highly opportunistic and relentlessly efficient. They exist at the vanguard of DNA variance, exhibiting more structural diversity than plants, animals, archaea or even bacteria. This 21st-century guide offers an engaging introductory section explaining exactly what viruses are and how they operate, followed by individual profiles of some of the world’s most notable examples, each with its own dazzling mugshot.
Dr Marilyn J. Roossinck is Professor of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State University, and the Sir Walter Adjunct Professor at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. She has published a large number of scientific papers, and writes for Nature magazine, Microbiology Today, and other popular science publications.

Bone is one of the most extraordinary materials in the natural world – flexible and strong, available in a number of types and densities. Just look at the range of jobs it can do, from supporting a huge mammal like an elephant to enabling a bat to fly. And further back, scanning the distant past, scientists know what they know about the dinosaurs from their fossilized bones, reminders of how different our world used to be. Skeletons takes the virtuoso engravings of the 19th and early 20th centuries and marries them with a contemporary, readable text that brings them right up to date, creating an appealing mix of scientific eye candy and cutting-edge scholarship.
Andrew Kirk was educated at Oxford University and worked in publishing for over 20 years before becoming a full-time writer. His previous titles have included books on ancient history and a study of Thoreau. This is his sixth book.

An absorbing study of how birds think, revealing how recent discoveries may call for us to re-evaluate how we identify and classify intelligence in other animals.
Bird Brain begins by looking at the structures and functions of the avian brain, and moves on to examine different types of intelligence, profiling the behaviours of a range of the species, studying the masterminds of the avian world, and examining what types of behaviour can be interpreted as ‘intelligence’. Bird Brain not only looks at the well-studied species such as New Caledonian crows, but also casts a broader eye over a wide range of species from around the world.
Dr Nathan Emery is Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Biology at Queen Mary University of London. His research has focused on the cognitive abilities of corvids, apes and parrots, and he is currently working with the ravens at the Tower of London. He has authored two previous books and is on the editorial boards of Animal Cognition and the Journal of Comparative Psychology.

✤ A beautiful standalone title profiling all known species
✤ Straightforward accounts include full facts and figures as well as covering interesting aspects of behaviour
✤ With spectacular photographs of even the most elusive species
Appearing in everything from ancient myths and superstitions to modern children’s stories, these beautiful birds are seen both as harbingers of good and bad news and icons of fear and wisdom. Yet uncovering the reality of their lives is a huge challenge as most are nocturnal and many are extremely secretive in their habits. New species are still being discovered, and fresh insights being gained into even the most familiar species. Owls brings together full descriptions and distribution maps for all 221 known owl species, and is illustrated with stunning colour photographs.
Marianne Taylor is a freelance writer, illustrator, photographer and editor. She worked for seven years in natural history publishing, and her particular interest in owls was sparked by a period in 2005 working with bird ringers studying Ural, Tengmalm’s and Eagle Owls in the forests of Sweden. She has written on a range of natural history subjects and her previous books include the RSPB’s British Birds of Prey.

What is Typography? is a compact guide to the discipline that lies at the epicentre of design and communication. With three sections exploring issues, anatomy, and an analysis of an eclectic group of portfolios, the book explores the structures and acceptable variations of type. The anatomy section breaks down the elements of this discipline to look at individual tools and processes, methods of organizing information, the mechanics of type, and the various means of arranging and displaying type. Finally, it looks at how the chosen media, and consequent process of reproduction, underpins every aspect of design.
The new edition of this classic handbook has been thoroughly revised and redesigned, with content focusing on typography’s development in new media.
David Jury is course leader of MA Art, Design, and the Book at Colchester School of Art. Previous publications include About Face: Reviving the Rules of Typography and Letterpress. He is a fellow of the International Society of Graphic Designers.

Fashion Details combines the studies of the two classic 19th-century illustrators Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth. Their works are presented first chronologically and then by subject, so that illustrators, students and historians can choose their preferred route, either following the path of fashion through the centuries, or studying the contrasting styles of individual clothing and accessories in detail. Silhouettes reveal the shifting shapes of style through the ages, while detailed cross-references help the researcher navigate the complex chronology of costume.

Most dog owners tend to think of games as the reward that comes after a training session. But play makes a terrific training tool, too, if you know which games to pick and the right ways to play them. What’s more, you can tailor games to your dog’s strengths and introduce lots of variations to his favourite activities. Fun & Games for a Smarter Dog offers dozens of options to help you build your bond with your dog, boost his thinking skills and ramp up his fitness levels. Each one looks at the way your dog approaches play and what he can learn when you play together, and takes you step by step through the activity. Even better, it ensures your dog will have so much fun that he’ll never know he’s been taking classes.
Andrew Banks has authored a number of bestselling books on dogs, ranging from general guides to more specific titles on ways to enhance your relationship with your pet, including The Complete Book of the Dog (2007) and The Secret Language of Puppies (2015).

Bonding Games / Swap
SWAPGiving up a valued object can be a big deal for a dog. Teaching ‘Swap’ shows your pet that if he gives something up to you willingly, even something he values, he’ll get something just as good back in exchange. What’s more, as you practice, you’ll end up giving him back the original object as well. Soon he’ll be handing over his toy, bone, or whatever you ask for, and eagerly taking the substitute you’re offering, confident that you won’t be depriving him.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?Show your pet that he won’t regret giving something up to you when he’s asked.
1 This is an opportunistic exercise: you need to be ready for the right situation to happen naturally. Wait until your pet is relaxed and happily playing with a favorite toy. Have a hollow treat toy stuffed with something irresistible ready, and, when you see your opportunity, fetch it from the fridge.
2 Simply approach your dog in a relaxed way, bend or kneel down beside him and show him the stuffed treat toy. If he immediately drops whatever he’s playing with, say ‘Swap’, hand him the substitute and gently pick up the original toy.
3 Sometimes he’ll grab for the original toy, dropping the new one. If he does, give it to him immediately (you want to teach him that he won’t lose out in any way by working with you). If he loses interest in the original toy, lay it down gently nearby, so that he can see that he ended up with both the things he wanted.
4 Practice this whenever the chance arises (it’s a good idea to have a pre-stuffed treat toy ready in the fridge at all times when you’re teaching your pet this exercise). Always wait until your dog gives up the initial toy willingly—don’t cheat by pulling
it out of his mouth, or he’ll be less likely to give it to you next time. Stay patient, and return the first toy as soon as your dog is focused on the treat toy (you can wait a few more seconds before returning it as your dog learns to trust that he will get it back).
5 It may take a few weeks of regular practice, but you’ll find that, as your dog becomes used to giving things up to you, you can reduce the ‘value’ of what you’re offering in exchange. Eventually, he’ll happily give something up to you as soon as you say ‘Swap’.
HANDS OFF!Dog society is interesting in the way in which it views possession of objects: it’s unusual to see a dog, even a larger and stronger dog, take a coveted item (whether it be a toy or a bone) away from another who has it. If the second dog leaves the treasure, even for a moment, all bets are off: the first dog will feel free to take it. But taking something by force that another dog is enjoying doesn’t often happen in everyday canine etiquette.
WHAT HE LEARNSTo give things up to you easily, and to trust that you’ll treat him respectfully around the things he values.
WHY IT’S USEFUL On the rare occasion that your dog has something he shouldn’t (he’s chewing a shoe, perhaps, or he’s found a chicken bone in the street) and you need him to give it up to you without a battle, you’ll have already done the groundwork.

KNITTING TRIGGERS ENLIGHTENED THOUGHTS
◆
Maybe there was someone knitting with us in mind in the weeks
before we were born. Outgrowing baby garments, we became
conscious of clothes and, at some point, recognized the action of
knitting. It is hard to remember when I rst understood that knitted
things could be made by people I knew. As my dexterity developed,
I learned how to knit, discovering how stitches work.
Collecting skills from books and knitters around me con-
tinues to spark ideas of what I could make. Together,
knitting and the meditative space it oers, have provided me
with a lifelong structure for learning. Like life, knitting has its
ups, downs, easy and dicult bits. Much like mood swings,
and other uncontrollable feelings, craft processes are incon-
venient and unpredictable. Things can change quickly. Craft
demands frequent practice, and constantly asks us to relish a
challenge, much in the same vein as meditation.
Sometimes we can relax with repetitive work, and other
times knitting demands serious concentration. We can sit
quietly knitting mindfully on our own, or use our knitting
presence to oer trusted companionship. We can knit things
for ourselves, our loved ones, or for the world around
us. Sometimes when my knitting is turning out well, I con-
sider the afterlife, where my knitting continues its journey on
Earth without me.
W H E R E V E R D E S I G N L I K E S
On the most basic level, knitting proves that we can make
things happen. If something is beautiful and functional,
it holds truth. Making a truthful object with your own bare
hands disproves any lack of belief in your abilities. A knitter
starts with a dream, and turns it into a reality. Making things
is exciting enough for a craftsperson, but for a non-
craftsperson, the process looks like pure magic. Enjoy
noticing people’s astonishment at your masterpieces, as you
remember all you have learned through the making of them.
Quietly give thanks for the bond you have with your textile
and consider the real magic of consciousness.

Investigating the history of knitting, I learned that I am one
student, of a new generation, keeping skills alive and working
with the intention of making the world a better place. Textile
archives the world over show us designs and social histories,
but for the most part, the legacy of a domestic knitter is rarely
documented. Many knitters before me did not sign their
work, nor did much of it survive, because it was loved, used,
and worn until it was dust. The gift a knitter leaves behind is,
of course, one of skilled, beautiful textiles, which will hope-
fully be mended and kept safe, but alongside our material

Grab your scissors and some pencils or crayons and get ready to make some beautiful cityscapes with Cut & Colour Playbook: Cities. First, colour in the illustration and add your own details. Then, on the back of the page, follow the lines to snip away the parts you don’t need. At the end of the process, you will have built up your very own city scene by layering up the pages. Four cities feature, and an additional section gives children the chance to create their own diorama. An original twist on the colouring-book format, encouraging children to think through a multi-layered project in a fun and creative way.

Sticker, Shape, Create is the first title in a stylish new art activity series for creative children, combining stickers and drawing. Using just a few basic sticker shapes and following simple step-by-step instructions, kids can build striking sticker pictures on a variety of backgrounds. Each spread features a different theme, from chirping birds and incredible insects to hot air balloons, fun cityscapes, fireworks and lots more.
Children can use pens or coloured pencils to add fun and imaginative details to the simply-shaped stickers, bringing the pictures to life. Each pull-out sticker sheet contains the same shapes in 10 different colours, so children can mix and match to create their own unique pictures and combinations.

POP OUT& BUILDA CASTLEBATTLE SCENE
Have you ever wondered how archaeologists piece
together the remains of things to work out what they
looked like? Like a detective solving a crime, they
uncover clues. A stone ball buried in rubble, a mass
grave, a rusty horseshoe – all these things mean
something to an archaeologist.
Become an archaeologist and
discover how people lived in
medieval times.
Build an awesome
3D model of a medieval castle
under siege.
Step into an archaeological dig
site and unearth the
secrets of the past.
Annalie Seaman is an archaeologist and
educator. She provides experimental archaeology
courses to people of all ages, and is passionate about
sharing medieval history with the next generation.
Rob turpin is a London-based illustrator and
designer. He loves to draw imagined places, robots,
spaceships and, of course, castles.
Charlie Simpson is an illustrator, paper
engineer and archaeology enthusiast.
Learn about medieval life and siege warfare. Discover
the different parts of a medieval castle and what they
were used for. Then, armed with this new knowledge, you
can take on the challenge of piecing together your own
awesome 3D model castle.
