THE SITUATION now

Every year more than 20,000 people die in India due to Rabies. Thisaccounts for nearly 36% of the total deaths due to Rabies worldwide.

Most industrialised nations have eectively controlled Rabies. Eventhough the best methods for the prevention of Rabies are available in

India, the penetration of awareness regarding the use of these isstill lacking. IVSA India and WARD Foundation is leading the waragainst the Rabies Menace in India through advocacy, research,

awareness creation and more.IVSA India Program: Competition Drawing, Poster,Essay | Rally |Lecture |

“In Portugal, rabies is considered ocially eradicated since 1956.Since 1926, Portuguese veterinary services have systematically maintained a mandatory annual vaccination campaign. It was the eectiveness of these campaigns that allowed eradication of this disease, making Portugal one of the rst countries in the world to obtain the status of «country ocially free of rabies». There is also the requirement to register and license all canids and proof of rabies vaccination is a requirement for the issuance of the license. So, to celebrate this day, next wednesday the portuguese Veterinary Students Association will do lectures about it in all Veterinary schools. During one hour, the teachers will speak about national rabies situation and any other subjects on this topic.”

Texas has the most rabies cases than any other state in the United States. Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine students are celebrating World Rabies Day by providing an annual low cost rabies vaccine clinic in conjunction with a local blessing of the animals event at St. Francis Episcopal church in College Station, TX on October 5th, 2013. College Station is an agricultural community where many cats, dogs, and livestock are exposed topotentially infected wildlife. Students have the opportunity to practice preforming physical exams and give rabies vaccine to cats and dogs as well as speak with clients about the devastating eects of rabies. All proceeds are donated locally to the vet's school Good Samaritan Fund.

Vet students throughout the world come up against Rabies

Japan is one of the few rabies-free countries. Although 3 imported cases of human rabies were seen in 1970 and 2006, no other cases

have been reported since 1957. The Rabies Prevention Law, enacted in Japan in 1950, establishes the obligation to vaccinate and register

dogs in Japan. The law worked very well for rabies prevention in Japan. On the other hand, it’s getting a big problem that most Japanese people

know little about the risk of rabies, causing the decrease of the rate of vaccination for their pets. This time, IVSA-Japan is planning to inform p

eople about rabies and encourage vaccination through the Internet on World Rabies Day 2013.

Rabies was absent from Greek Country since 1987 when the last animal-crust was detected. After so many years, prevention measures were more loose and

the only prevention measure left, was the obligatory vaccination for lyssa-virus to pets. But in October 2012 a rabies crust was ditected to a red-fox. Since then,

27 more crusts were recognised to animals(28-8-2013). Only one concerns a cat, three concern dogs and all the other concern the red fox. After the rst crust, a

plan for mass per os vaccination for wild carnivorous was elaborated. Furthermore the country was divided to high-medium-low-very low risk regions. In addition there

are ristrict measures for locomotion of animals from third countries or movement of household animals between high risk-non tisk regions. To decrease the risk of

appearance of rabies in cities the stray animals population stated to be vaccinated as intensively as possible. Last, but not least, there is a monitoring programme for dead

wild animals in order to track the possible ''invisible'' rabies-deaths. Today the rabies-situationin Greece is thought to be under control, but the unknown or uncontrolled situation to

neighbor countries makes the landscape really fade and as a result there is no space for ''loose''.So IVSA Thessaloniki under consideration of all these decided to address to a population-risk really sensitive with animals: KIDS. As a result there will be a ''Rabie Information Day'' to local

schools for the general and individual measures of protection against lyssa-virus!

Rabies is one of the many serious public health problems in Nepal. It provokes great public concern since most Nepalese people readily identify this disease with a painful and prolonged death without options for successful treatment once clinical signs appears. There is huge population of stray dogs. Annually 200 people dies of Rabies in Nepal. Very few owned dogs gets regular vaccination against Rabies.Dogs in Nepal live short, dicult lives. The local authorities have traditionally controlled the number of roaming dogs by the use of strychnine poison. Thus we are going to organize a mass anti-rabies vaccination program as well as awareness program on the WRD in the rural area of Chitwan where there is no history of vaccination against Rabies before and recently outbreak was reported.

IVSA NEPAL

In Finland rabies is a problem almost only on the east-border. It is detected in wildlife such as foxes and raccoon dogs, which come to Finland mostly from Russia. Along the east-border rabies is prevented from spreading to the other parts of the country by spreading bait vaccines by aeroplanes. Because we don't have street dogs, our situation is quite good and in pets rabies is not a big problem. There have been some cases the last few years, all of the diseased animals were imported dogs and horses. The majority of our dogs are vaccinated, it is obligatory to vaccine dogs before being allowed to take part in competitions and other happenings. Also to import animals form abroad dogs have to bevaccinated, though smuggling happens especially from Estonia and Russia. We vet students get vaccinated for free too, because of a positive nding in a horse a few years back. As far as I know, it has never been detected in humans.

IVSA FINLAND

Rabies is one of the oldest recognized zoonotic diseases in human. Once the clinical signs develop , it is known as universally fatal. Rabies is a major public health problem

in Bangladesh, where most of the people live in rural areas. However there is a little epidemiological information available for Bangladesh. Besides of that Bangladeshi people

are very lack of knowledge about the disease called Rabies. In a survey , it was estimated that in Bangladesh , 166590 people are bitten by animal in every year of Bangladesh. And

the total No. of death is 2100 per year in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh , Rabies has a signicant eects in Livestock Economy. There are so many domestic animals die in every year due to

Rabies. Most of the animal specially calf, goat and sheep are bitten by stray dogs while grazing in eld. In our country there are several steps are taken to control street dogs for the prevention

of Rabies in cities, but rural villages are still far from that measures. Through World Rabies Day 2013 , we would like to aware the mass people of Bangladesh for control of Rabies. And I

hope Bangladesh will be free from Rabies in between 2020.
