NEW FROM ANDY CROUCH

True f lourishing, says Andy Crouch, travels

down an unexpected path—being both strong

and weak.

We see this unlikely mixture in the best

leaders—people who use their authority for

the benefit of others, while also showing

extraordinary willingness to face and embrace

suffering. We see it in Jesus, who wielded

tremendous power yet also exposed himself

to hunger, ridicule, torture and death. Rather

than being opposites, strength and weakness areactually meant to be combined in every human

life and community.

With the characteristic insight, memorable

stories and hopeful realism he is known for,

Crouch shows us how to walk this path so that

the image of God can shine through us—notjust for our own good, but for the sake of others.

PRAISE FOR STRONG AND WEAK

“The core need the book addresses is finding a way to hold together two of the most basic

features of human life—authority and strength, vulnerability and weakness—to see how

they both contribute to flourishing, and to choose the path that leads toward flourishing, for

ourselves and others. It’s a path that requires us to learn to be both strong and weak.”

MAPPING HOLY GROUND

Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) had a mission:

reintroduce the Christian faith to Christians.

In Kierkegaard’s time, being a Christian was

more a cultural heritage than a spiritual reality.

How could he break through to people who weremembers of the church and thought they were

Christians already? Like an Old Testament prophet,

Kierkegaard used a variety of pointed and dramatic

ways to shake people from their slumber. He inci-

sively diagnosed the spiritual ailments of his age and

offered a fresh take on classic Christian teaching.

Mark Tietjen thinks that Kierkegaard’s critique

of his contemporaries strikes close to home today.

Through an examination of core Christian doc-

trines—the person of Jesus Christ, human nature,

Christian witness and love—Tietjen helps us hear

Kierkegaard’s missionary message to a church that

often fails to follow Christ with purity of heart.

KIERKEGAARD: FRIEND OR FOE?

Mark A. Tietjen (PhD, Baylor University) is chaplain and Grace Palmer

Johnston Chair of Bible at the Stony Brook School in Stony Brook, New

York. He previously served as associate professor and program director of

philosophy at the University of West Georgia. Former secretary-treasurer

of the Søren Kierkegaard Society, Tietjen is the author of Kierkegaard,

Communication, and Virtue: Authorship as Edification.

PRAISE FOR KIERKEGAARD

“Kierkegaard famously described his task as ‘reintroducing

Christianity into Christendom.’ In this wonderfully rich

and clearly written book Mark Tietjen helps us understand

what Kierkegaard meant by this, and thereby helps us see

how vital it is for the contemporary church to encounter

Kierkegaard’s thought. Kierkegaard’s message will pull us

away from complacency and help us understand anew what

it means to be a follower of Jesus.”

 —C. Stephen Evans, Baylor University

Q & A WITH MARK TIETJEN

“Mark Tietjen’s book describes, in the vernacular,

how Kierkegaard quickens readers to receive the daily

gift of a faith that has often been taught either as a

cosmic culture battle or as a guide to good manners.

This book is an inviting, loving introduction to the

writings of a Christian intent on revivifying the

 faith of the faithful.”

 —Amy Laura Hall, Duke University

KIERKEGAARD IS FAMOUS FOR HIS “ATTACK UPON CHRISTENDOM.” WHAT EXACTLY

WAS HE ATTACKING AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO THE CHURCH TODAY?

Kierkegaard does not attack Christianity like Nietzsche, who quite literally condemns

Christian faith, but rather he attacks Christians, somewhat like the prophets “attacked”

an unfaithful Israel or Jesus “attacked” religious hypocrites. Kierkegaard’s attack was

aimed toward the established state church, the cultural behemoth that wielded greatreligious and cultural authority in his day. Jesus’ way is the way of persecution, of

suffering, and yet the established church and its clergy enjoyed esteemed status and

privilege. For Kierkegaard, the church and its leaders failed to take up their cross.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE CHRISTIANS READING KIERKEGAARD TODAY TAKE AWAY FROM

HIS WORK?

Kierkegaard simultaneously challenges our faith—our complacency, hypocrisy, our half-

hearted attempts at following Jesus—but also encourages our faith. He understands human

existence and the deep, emotional makeup of humans so deeply, and he understands and

articulates how the Gospel speaks to these emotions and needs. In a non-trivial and non-

trendy way Kierkegaard makes relevant God’s love for humanity in Jesus Christ.
