Early Life

Born on September 14, 1849 in Ryazan, Russia

Oldest of 10 children

His father was the village priest

His mother was the daughter of a priest

Inspired by Charles Darwin's The Origin of the Species

Enrolled at the University of Saint Petersburg

Proceeded to the Academy of Medical Surgery where he received his doctorate
