Outline of the Higher Education system in France
The French Higher Education system slightly differs from other European countries. Students who obtained a baccalaureate may pursue their studies on different paths:
The Postsecondary Technical Certificate (2 years) is offered by Secondary Education establishments where professionals are trained during the course; or after pursuing 3 years, it is equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree.
The Elite Higher Education Institutes (Grandes Ecoles) offer Preparatory courses (2 years) for admission to one of their programmes which award Engineering Degree, Business School Diploma or other Degrees.
The University Institutes of Technology (UIT) are part of the universities offering HND (DUT) courses with the duration of 2 years, and a year of further studies in order to obtain a Professional Bachelor’s degree (Licence Professionnelle). After an HND course, students can choose to continue their studies at an UIT for the Professional Bachelor’s Degree, at a University for a Bachelor’s Degree if they wish to achieve a Master later on or they can apply for a course at a Grande Ecole.
Universities offer Bachelor’s degrees (Licence) with the course duration of 3 years followed by Master’s Degrees which may be achieved after 2 years of study and a Doctorate may be achieved after completion of a programme of further 3 years.

The University and the IUT of Cergy-Pontoise
The IUT of Cergy-Pontoise is directly connected to the University of Cergy- Pontoise. Despite being a component of the University of Cergy-Pontoise, it has its own independence in regards to organization, budgets and training programmes.
What is an IUT?
IUTs are part of the university system in France. An IUT is a public Higher Education establishment, connected to a university offering professional training in a range of courses. IUTs were first established over 40 years ago and have since built strong relationships between themselves and businesses. It will greatly benefit graduated students when applying for internships and permanent employment.
What is a DUT?
IUTs give students the opportunity to study a 2-year undergraduate course called a Diplôme universitaire de technologie or DUT. This is similar to a Higher National Diploma (HND). A DUT is a professional diploma which incorporates compulsory internships and projects with companies. Students benefit greatly from consistent support, personalised teaching methods, practical exercises and specialised rooms i.e. language labs and computer rooms. Students can then continue to study for their licence professionnelle (professional Bachelor’s degree). Following this, students may pursue postgraduate studies such as a Master’s degree or PHD. Other students choose to seek employment or enroll at a Business or an Engineering School.
