FAQ•1)      Is it a good idea to take the OLSAT exam?

• It depends on what parents are hoping for from the assessment. In alignment with the National Association for Gifted and California Association for Gifted, IUSD does not believe one assessment is the best measure of a student’s abilities (school site administers Multiple Criteria Measure)

FAQ

•2)      How is the curriculum and HW different for a gate student v. non-gate student?

•Our goal is to add layers to the content to deepen a student’s understanding of the big ideas. Questions that require critical thinking are threaded into the curriculum and instruction to allow students to dig deeper. More information will be shared at our September 17thmeeting as well as on iusd.org

FAQ

•3)      If not OLSAT, what exactly are they looking for in terms of the multiple criteria assessment?

•Specific information regarding the Multiple Criteria Measure can be found at https://iusd.org/parent_resources/gate/MultipleCriteriaModel.html.Additional information will be shared at our September 17th meeting.

FAQ

•4)      Is there a set percentage per class for GATE?

•Our goal is to identify approx. 15-18% at each grade level. With some of the current components, we are above that number; each grade level varies from year to year.

FAQ

•5)      How is GATE different than APAAS in terms of curriculum and HW?

•The curriculum and homework are not that different between the two programs. Since teachers design much of the process of the learning, questions will differ as well as product options. The biggest difference is that in APAAS students have less direction on the process and/or products.

FAQ

•6)      For APAAS, is there a percentage who gets in per school? how come some school have more kids get into APAAS than others?

•The only restrictions we have w/ student placement is the number at each grade level, since each class is capped at 33 students, and there are six classes at each grade level. The student’s current school is not a factor. We have not seen a pattern that more students are being placed from one school over another.

FAQ

•7)      What are they exactly is the determination to get into APAAS?

•In a nut-shell, the program is designed for intellectual, divergent learners. Each year we make changes to the placement process and will have a bteer idea of the elements after we analyze the current students participating in the Program. For an in-depth review of the placement process, please attend our APAAS Informational Meeting in January.
