REGISTERING FOR HONORS COURSES
1. Honors sections of courses are identified by the class number. The class numbers listed below in the
course listing are the Honors class numbers. When registering, be sure to select the “Honors
Section” of the course listed.
2. Authorization is often required for enrollment. Courses requiring departmental approval on
OneStart have appropriate contact information listed in the descriptions below.
3. When registering for HON-H 399 you must be enrolled in this course by the first day of classes;
otherwise, a late fee will be assessed to your bursar account. Therefore, please get the HON-H 399
form submitted by December 1, 2009.
4. If you want to receive Honors credit for a capstone, research, or graduate course you must first
submit the form to the Honors College Office approval.

Description: This course will examine the ideas and values that have shaped the collective identity of
the United States from colonial days to the present. We will study historical documents in
order to better understand contemporary American attitudes and beliefs. We will also
explore how people from different backgrounds have fashioned their own personal
identities by deciding for themselves what it means to be an American. About half of the
course will be devoted to the experiences of immigrants and the complex process of
becoming an American. Authorization: None
Notes: Students in this interdisciplinary course will write brief response papers to readings chosen
from history, literature, sociology, anthropology, political science, and women's studies.
Students will learn the techniques of oral history interviewing, and participate in the
American Identity Project, an ongoing research project to determine how immigrants
construct their personal identities in the U.S.

Description: Independent study, under the supervision of a chemistry faculty member or appropriate
academic advisor can be earned by completion of: (a) a chemical research project; (b) a

schools, or other science-related groups or organizations. Students will report the results of
their activities in both a formal written report and oral presentation, prepare portfolios of
undergraduate work in chemistry, discuss recent scientific literature, and explore
