John Harrison (research fellow, Liverpool School of Architecture) is a British architect who has been travelling in the Himalaya for over thirty years, documenting and restoring historic buildings. He has experience in managing complex preservation projects, including research of historic documents and traditional earthen building materials. The restoration and conversion of the Munshi House in Leh old town as a community arts centre has recently been given an Award of Distinction in the 2018 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Current projects are in Ladakh (India) as well as in Kathmandu und Mustang, Nepal. What distinguishes Harrison’s current work in Nepal is the training of local students of architecture and conservators on site. His exhibition ‘Himalayan Buildings’ has been shown widely in South Asia and Europe; and an exhibition of his ‘Mustang drawings’ at the Taragaon Museum in Kathmandu in 2018. In this talk he will describe his work with Tibet Heritage Fund in the old city of Lhasa twenty years ago, in the brief period when foreign NGOs were permitted to work in Chinese Tibet.

Ein Segen für das Land. Architekturdokumentation und Restaurierung von traditionellen repräsentativen Lehmbauten in der alten Stadt von Lhasa, Tibet John Harrison ist ein britischer Architekt und Architekturzeichner, der seit über dreißig Jahren Tibet und den Himalaya (einschließlich Kalash in Pakistan) bereist, und dort historische Gebäude dokumentiert und restauriert. Er hat Erfahrung in der Koordination komplexer Erhaltungsprojekte, einschließlich der Erforschung historischer Dokumente und Materialien. In Ladakh (Jammu-Kashmir, Indien) war er als Architekt für die Restaurierung und den Umbau des Munshi-Hauses in der Leh-Altstadt als Community-Kunstzentrum tätig. Dieses Projekt wurde kürzlich bei den UNESCO-Asien-Pazifik-Preisen der UNESCO für die Erhaltung des Kulturerbes 2018 ausgezeichnet. Aktuell führt er Projekte in Ladakh (Indien), Purang (TAR, China) sowie in Kathmandu und Mustang, Nepal durch. Was seine Arbeit in Nepal auszeichnet, ist das Anlernen von lokalen Architekten und Konservatoren in Ausbildung.

Seine Ausstellung „Himalayan Buildings“ wurde an mehreren Orten in Südasien und Europa gezeigt, und eine Ausstellung seiner Mustang-Zeichnungen im Taragaon Museum in Kathmandu im Jahr 2018.

In diesem Vortrag wird er seine Arbeit mit dem Tibet Heritage Fund in der Altstadt von Lhasa vor zwanzig Jahren beschreiben, in der kurzen Zeit, in der es ausländischen NGOs gestattet war, im chinesischen Tibet zu arbeiten.
