Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer’s Life: Monday, June 3 A docent from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco will discuss the work of Annie Leibovitz. For decades, Leibovitz has artistically captured the icons of popular culture with her award-winning photography including portraits of a pregnant Demi Moore, Nelson Mandela in Soweto, and George W. Bush in the White House; searing photojournalism from the siege of Sarajevo; haunting landscapes from the American West and Jordan; and personal photos documenting the birth of her three daughters and other scenes of private family life. Youkali Trio: Monday, June 24 Three musicians, eight instruments, and five + centuries of music from three continents – Roxanne Oliva, Josh Fossgreen and Daniel Kahane offer a culturally enriching musical experience to audiences of all ages through their enthusiastic stage artistry and their “post eclectic” interpretations of musical styles from around the world. Thank You • Thank You Thank you to all our Simcha Sunday Bakers and Volunteers. This was Friendship Circle’s best year yet, and we could not have done it without the support of our dedicated volunteers – THANK YOU Carol Jarvis, Ruth Turner, Anne Brisgel, Geri Fabian, Harriet Baer, Myrna Rivkin, Vicki Kalish, Edythe Smith, Natalie Friedman, Janine Bamberger, Lois Glenn, Ray Kaplan, Barbara Scharf, Sharon Schechter, Edee Sternfield-Squires, Joy Lovinger, Evey Abramowitz, Judy Vance, Jeanne Zweig, Eric Andresen, Alea Andresen.

Special thanks to 6th grade students Daniel Breschi Almond, Aminata Slanina Daffeh and Chloe McCormick. As a way of bringing the Middle Ages (current field of study) to life, their teacher hosts a “Knighting Ceremony” in which each student is recognized for completing a chosen task of service in preparation for admittance to the “Royal Circle of Comrades of the Middle Ages.” Daniel, Aminata and Chloe chose to work with Friendship Circle seniors as their task. In addition to volunteering to bake, sell cookies, and cleanup Cookie Corner, they visited a small nursing home, where they played instruments and did crafts with the residents. Friendship Circle is grateful for their enthusiasm and their help!

Congregation Shomrei Torah for continuing to offer your beautiful synagogue as a gathering place for our luncheons and other meetings

Meet Friendship Circle Advisory Committee Member Natalie Friedman

Natalie grew up in Flatbush, NY and attended Abraham Lincoln High School and Brooklyn College for one year. Soon after Natalie married, her husband was drafted and she went to work for the Federal Government in the Navy Department as a legal secretary. After a while she moved to Georgia to be near her husband who was stationed there as a medic.

They bought a house in Long Island after the war and started a family. After shoveling snow one day they decided to sell their home and move to California. The house went on the market the very next day and immediately sold. They moved to the predominately Jewish Pico/Robertson area of Los Angeles. Her husband was successful at selling cashmere sweaters with mink collars. Natalie took classes at UCLA for two years studying CA and federal labor laws. It paid off as she got a great job as a paralegal administrator, taking depositions. She commonly drove over 100 miles a day. She did this for 28 years.

After her husband passed away she moved to Northridge, north of LA in the San Fernando Valley. After her condo was ruined in the Northridge earthquake, a friend recommended the town of Oakmont. She moved to Santa Rosa instead in 1994 because it was closer to her activities.

Natalie has been involved with Friendship Circle ever since it began at Congregation Beth Ami, where she is a member. At the time, Bernice Fox led a group of 10-15 women. “Barbara Scharf followed and built it up to the large wonderful organization it is today.” Natalie worked in the gift shop at Beth Ami for 17 years and was a treasurer at Hadassah.

She has two daughters who live in the Bay Area. Jane lives in Oakland and Hope in Berkeley. She has four grandchildren.

“I am very lucky because I’m healthy. And I’m healthy because I do the right things.”

Friendship Circle is a program of the Jewish Community Center, Sonoma County which is a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation, a beneficiary of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties.

The mission of the Jewish Community Federation is to foster and enhance Jewish life here at home, in Israel, and around the world by caring for the vulnerable, providing Jewish education for our children, engaging our interfaith families, promoting peoplehood

and Israel and providing aid in times of crises. We are also grateful to be funded, in part by a grant from the Jewish Community Federation. Support from the Jewish Community Federation is not enough.

We depend on members of the Friendship Circle community for donations and support.
