REAL JAZZ NOTESThe Art of ImprovisationHelps students develop avocabulary for soloing, and aninsight into telling a musical story.They will learn focus andinteraction with a rhythm section,how to construct their playingfrom the best elements of styleand learn how to becomesensitive to what those bestelements are.

THE LANGUAGE OF TRUTHFinding the Voice of JazzLearning how to use the voice helps to enhance musical andimprovisational skills and reveals anew form of emotionalexpression. Students will use theirvoices to assist in learning andunderstanding melody, developingharmonic awareness, expressionand musicianship.

JAZZ DEMOCRACYDiscipline of the SidemanDevelops the skills of how towork as a group and understandthe leadership and the disciplineof playing in ensembles. Studentswill explore combined soloing,when to play and when to stayout of the way of fellow players,how to work together to createa group sound while listeningsensitively to others, and takepart in the democracy of thebandstand.

RHYTHMICFUNDAMENTALS Core Principles of JazzDevelops a fine-tunedunderstanding of rhythm in Jazzwith a focus upon Swing andPulse, highlighting the importanceof ensemble cohesion andcommunicating ideas. Everyonewill strive to achieve Ellington’smantra – “It don’t mean a thing ifit ain’t got that swing.”

JAZZ ROOTS AND LEGENDS Jazz Through its HistoryHelps students understand the foundations of The Blues as an Americanartform and introduces repertoire from the major periods of jazz; pre-swing, swing, bebop, cool, hard bop, contemporary, funk and fusion,explores seminal figures like Armstrong, Ellington, Monk, Mingus, Ornette,Coltrane, Shorter and others. Through this practical approach, studentswill learn and workshop major pieces from the jazz canon and beencouraged to further release their creative potential through the music.

LIVING JAZZMasterclasses, Workshops and PerformancesOffers an exciting array of opportunities to work with international jazzartists in focussed Masterclasses and Specialist Workshops. Guest artistsnot only supplement the core curriculum, but also perform alongsidestudents in electrifying performances in a variety of venues (includingRonnie Scott’s, The Barbican and The Wigmore Hall). Specially designedholiday courses are also offered in addition to the weekly programme.

ARTISTSUnder the guidance of Julian Joseph who regularly leads sessions,the JJJA artistic team includes Trevor Watkis, Tony Kofi and ByronWallen and a range of outstanding celebrity guests including Jean Touissant, Cleveland Watkiss, Steve Williamson, Peter King,Bobby Wellins, Mark Hodgson, Patrick Clahar, Mark Mondesir,Danilo Perez, Courtney Pine, Soweto Kinch, Branford and Wynton Marsalis.

THE JULIAN JOSEPH JAZZACADEMY (JJJA) is a weeklyAcademy under the artisticdirection of internationallyrenowned jazz pianist andcomposer Julian Joseph, offeringtalented young instrumentalistsand vocalists an amazingopportunity to work with someof the world’s top jazz musiciansto develop their creative talentsand performance skills, throughexploring the American roots of Jazz.

The Academy’s Junior Programmeis for students who demonstrategreat potential and whoseknowledge and skills need furtherdevelopment before they join themain programme.
