“It’s in the ‘Dad Book’.”
Matthew 1:18-2518 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His
mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,
Matthew 1:18-25"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary
your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD, AND BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which is translated, "God with us."
Matthew 1:18-2524 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of
the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her
firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

JEWISH MARRIAGE
1. Contractual Stage2. Betrothal Stage3. Wedding
JOSEPH’s CHOICES:
• Ignore it … no big deal.• Lie about it.• Make a public spectacle.• Quietly put her away.
Deut. 24:1-41 "When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that
she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house,
2 when she has departed from his house, and goes and becomes another man's wife,
3 if the latter husband detests her and writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her as his wife,
4 then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
Deut. 22:28-2928 "If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is
not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out,
29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.
Deut. 22:25-2725 "But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the
countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.
26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter.
27 For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her.
And the man to whom she was
betrothed? found “uncleanness” in her
would be permitted to divorce her
must put it in writing
he could never take her as his wife
