He based his play on the female characters driven into Dionysus’ madness, instead of the exhausted and worn out story of conflict be- tween gods and men. “A heart felt WOW! I mean, I’m really touched!” Sunil Pal, a huge fan of theatre, cries out. “It was such an emotional performance. I mean, it was so real and so impressive. My brain just needs some time to ‘digest’. It really felt like we, the audience, were part of what was happening on stage. The performance really communicated the tragedy of the story. It was very easy to grasp, like watching a Greek tragedy. It started with the introduction, followed by the tragic storyline and at the end the inevitable catastrophe. Also, I was really impressed with the actor from Prishtina University, who performed in English. I can’t even find the words to describe the whole thing. I enjoyed being a part of this amazing event!” (GM)

Fett and Bart Fader will take to the stage, with their “Fresh for ’88 sound collage of forgotten soul,

raw funk and hiphop jams that need to be heard by everyone.” Known for their dj sets at Bitterzoet,

you should check them out today at 11pm in the Compagnietheater, or visit www.struttin.nl. The next

day, experience the “organic, classical jazz” of Crescent double Quartet, headed by sax player Aart

van Bergen at 10:30pm in the Compagnietheater. Check them out at www.aartvanbergen.nl. After-

wards, dj Tim nieburg will play “anything he feels like”. Sunday will provide the ying for Saturday’s

does Frascati 2 have a cyclorama? do you have a dressing room for fifty dancers? Would you mind us pouring eight litres of milk on the dance floor? everything is possible! After seeing a Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas, I can no longer say – unfor-tunately – that something is impossible. Yet, whether it’s feasible? every year, ITs proves to be a giant complex jigsaw. And every year one thing or another will be present in abun-dance. Last year we had sand. This year, people swinging from ropes. But at least it’s clear, from the many technical descrip-tions we receive, that students are extremely imaginative. Like this one: “a baby’s diarrhoea will be suggested with a liquid substance made of cof-fee and thickening agent. There should be a giant behind in the making. At the end of the play I will crawl into the anus. Prob-able ass-size: 240 by 240 cm. Will this be a prob-lem?” – Well, now we know … anything is possible.

harmonie-lehrereview

Uniform and unified formations. This is what we see in the mime performance Harmonielehre by Amsterdamse Hoge-school voor de Kunsten. In line, wearing costumes tailored to military associations (straight cuts and dark grey in colour) they move in unison. Walking backwards and pressing them-selves into the walls, they establish the rules: FOLLOW! and IMITATE! With a light comic touch they begin to vibrate their bodies, and use this vibration to generate a vocal tune. Fol-lowing the apparent rules of ‘cohesion’ they create a humor-ous musicality. When a performer takes the initiative to try something new, the others react like mindless sheep. But before long the rules are broken. These characters are a lot more rebellious than mere sheep. Breaking the unified cho-reography, a female performer starts to grab her body in places that assert her sexuality. Her wails, by association, become hysteric sounds of pleasure. The performance con-sistently follows the same pattern of copy and rebel. Despite the compelling urge for individuality, the group has a unique and charming identity. Playful, and at times comforting. (JS)

the amnesic days of the Polar nightsreview

The closing image: she respectfully places the little nest on the ground and remains standing, curved, face down, with her hands over her toes. A roller skater, dressed complete-ly in white, puts a stuffed eagle on top of the nest which is filled with eggs. Preceding these events is forty minutes of apparently incoherent chaos, in which the stage has been covered in bread sticks, bottle caps, an alarm clock, a plug, flowers, balls and books. In this mime performance, the third year students of the Czech Janacek Academy of Mu-sic and Performing Arts show an intangible, yet absorbing spectacle full of striking images. The roller skater glides by holding eagles and banners, which are reminiscent of mo-mentous events in the American history. The war theme appears, when one of the actors imitates gunfire by rhyth-mically tapping his stick on the ground. One of them shows close resemblance to a suicide terrorist at gunpoint when the red dot of a laser beam appears on his forehead. In his hand: a piece of chord attached to his coat. As if he is about to blow himself up. Beautiful images which, sporadically, create order out of chaos. (MB)

“The spectators won’t be passive recipients, separat-ed from the action on stage by the infamous fourth wall,” Domenika Weinert of ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Arnhem says. “I want them to be right in the middle of the event.” Endstation Brecht. Ein Lust-spiel is not a One-Woman-Show, even though Weinert works as stage director, choreographer, writer and performer in this music theatre production – in-spired by Bertold Brecht’s Dreigroschenoper. Weinert offers a modern perspec-tive on Brecht’s material by adding current affairs. Like gender issues, or the economic crisis. During the play, graphic designer Ste-fan Schäfer performs live

scenography is being per-formed by graphic designer Stefan Schäfer. Alongside the scenic performance, an overhead projector displays collages and paintings. End-station Brecht is the sec-ond collaboration between Weinert and Schäfer. It deals with the question whether or not – or rather, how – mu-sic theatre can collaborate

with visual art. “Sensuality is an important element in the performance, because I aim to create a complex the-atrical experience that will tear down the wall between spectator and actor.” Just like Brecht tried to do in his use of language. (AP)

“Dancing is based on emo-tion, so it has to be emotion-al,” Flem-ish chore-ographer A n n van den

Broeck says. “A dancer has so many things to tell in a per-formance, and everything has to be explained through movement. Like sign lan-guage. Contemporary dance especially. This is so colour-ful and never the same. The main theme in my Dance Lecture at Compagniethe-ater is: BELIEVE IN YOUR-SELF. An artist always has doubts, mostly about see-

its emotionaling things correctly and the ability to express emotions clearly, when all you need is self-esteem ; the rest is disci-pline. So I guess that is what every dancer should have. Performances are meant to communicate something to the audience. As a dancer, you are constantly ‘talking’ through your movements. Most contemporary dancers have a unique way of using their body. Don’t try to copy someone else’s style! So, cre-ating your own vision and your own way of expressing your art are the most impor-tant objectives for an artist.” (GM)
