What is Cued Articulation? What is Cued Articulation?

A set of hand cues for teaching the individual sounds in a word. The hand movements are logical – each hand

movement represents one sound and the cue gives clues as to how and where the sound is produced.

•It represents sounds visually to compliment auditory information

•Teaches how to make sounds NOT letters. e.g - Hand sign is the same for koala, cat, choir

What is Cued Articulation? What is Cued Articulation?

• Jane Passy devised the cues while working with a group of children with severe speech and language problems.

•Teachers found that not only did using the cues help the children with difficulties, but it raised the sound awareness skills of everyone in the class.

• Jane developed the system to include 26 consonants and 23 vowel sounds.

Who uses Cued Articulation?Who uses Cued Articulation?

Cued Articulations can be used to support clients of all ages with a range of difficulties:

• Specific speech and language difficulties

•English as a second Language (ESL)

•Auditory Processing Problems

•Dyspraxia

Examples of when to use the Examples of when to use the cuescues

• When a child has difficulty articulating a sound: - Cue to prompt the child to assist production - Cue to aide intelligibility

• To improve phonological Awareness. - This is the ‘awareness of the sound structure of spoken words,

e.g. syllables, rhymes, individual sounds, etc.’ Using cued Articulation as a visual aid to support phonological awareness programs has shown to lead improvements in a child’s reading and spelling.

To prompt those with a hearing impairment as to what sound is being produced

Colour codingColour coding

Each of the consonant sounds are colour-coded as an extra visual cue when doing written

work.

- Each sound is colour coded according to place of articulation e.g. red - lip sounds

Page 26: I.T.S - Cued Articulation

How to use colour codingHow to use colour coding

Using the colour scheme can also prompt the client.

- underline reading books with the colours to help with literacy skills and prompt children to produce the correct sound

- Use colour coding to support clients spelling - If they say the wrong sound they are likely to spell

it wrong!

Page 27: I.T.S - Cued Articulation

Colour codingColour coding

• You can make an activity out of introducing colours, examples being;

• Orange put some orange lip stick on – and show kissing on hand with lips

• Blue – drink the blue drink or bubble gum to make tongues do blue – to show tongue tips are used for t and d

• Pink – make some tissue paper fires and practice the f sounds

Page 28: I.T.S - Cued Articulation

Colour codingColour coding

• Green – make snakes and make him hiss as he wakes up ssssss and then sleep zzzzzzzz

• In theory if you create a story around the colours and give the child another visual /semantic clue to help them remember the colour and the sign – this will support them using the approach
