STUDENT ’ROOS WHO SERVE Like the alumni highlighted in this year’s Alumni College “’Roos Who Serve,” Laura Perez ’16 of Port Isabel, Texas, understands the strength that results when students work together for a cause. During Spring Break 2015, she joined her efforts with those of 30 other students for the College’s Alternative Spring Break project in New Orleans. Students created backyard gardens and access to fresh vegetables for families and installed CFL light bulbs in homes, through partnership with Green Light New Orleans. Laura’s greatest learning/serving experience so far was a January Term “Medical Experiences in Mexico,” in which she served on a team of four students working alongside a physician in a rural health clinic in Piste, Yucatan, Mexico, gaining hands-on skills in the clinical care of patients. Many years of interaction with physicians and physical therapists for health issues of her own have motivated Laura to help others, just as she has been helped. She has begun applying to physical therapy programs. In spring 2015, Laura received the Robert M. Rogers Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service and the Anna L. Anderson Endowed Scholarship for an Outstanding Student in Health Sciences.
