Expect the extraordinary

Vik Chile

Millahue Valley, Chile

Day 1- Fly to Chile

Today, you will take a flight from Hong Kong to Amsterdam, then

transit to Santiago, the capital and largest city of Chile.

Day 2

On arrival Santiago’s International Airport you will be warmly

welcomed by a member of the our team, who will drive you

to tour around the barrios.

This fascinating tour is an exploration of Santiago’s thriving

barrios. In Chile, the term ‘barrio’ simply refers to a

neighbourhood with a character and identity of its own, and

Santiago has plenty to choose from. The downtown barrios of

Brasil, Yungay, and Paris-Londres are of huge historical,

political, and cultural importance. The revitalized Barrio

Lastarria – perhaps the most fashionable area in the city at

present – is packed with cafés, boutique hotels, small stores,

and a lively restaurant scene. It is also home to the iconic

creations of architect Luciano Kulczewski. Across the river,

Barrio Bellavista is bohemian, sophisticated, tidy, and chaotic

all at once, and is regarded as a seat of political and cultural

revolution. Elsewhere, Barrio Italia is one of the true gems of

Santiago. Known for its design stores and antiques restorers, it

is also home to trendy cafés and a wide variety of restaurants,

from full-on vegan, Spanish and Italian, to gourmet soup.

Santiago’s barrios are not exclusive to the downtown areas

however. For example, the elegant Barrio El Golf is home to

embassies, multi-national companies, expats, and the

country’s most expensive real estate. This tour offers

contrasts galore and a unique insight into Santiago’s barrio

life.

After the tour, drive south of the capital to the Colchagua

Valley, in the heart of Chile’s main wine production area.

In the evening dinner will be served at the hotel, accompanied

of course by Vik’s superb wines.

Day 3

Your first full day will commence with some active option of

your choice; choose from trekking, a bike ride, or horseback

riding. The excursions will end at the winery for a guided,

private visit. In the tasting room, you can try a range of Vik’s

wines, in the company of an expert who will teach you how to

discover the soul of their wines.

The Singular Santiago

Santiago, Chile

Day 4

After breakfast, it will be time to join your host for the drive

north to Maipo, one of South America’s most famous wine-

producing areas, and home to some of the New World’s finest

Cabernet Sauvignon. Today’s programme will focus on small,

independent wineries in the central coastal region that few

have even heard of, but really should. Wineries located

between Santiago and the coast are producing some of the

most interesting wines in the country. Each morning a thick

cool fog blankets the land, giving way to bright sunshine in the

afternoon. Ideal conditions for grapes such as Sauvignon

Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Not only are these

wineries creating a high quality product, they are also

adhering to ecologically sound practices. Surprisingly, Chile

has by far the largest average winery size of any wine

producing nation.

Until recently, capital was very much in the hands of a small

group of powerful families, making it difficult—if not

impossible—for anyone else to set up on their own, A few

years ago an organization was born that slowly but surely

began to change all that. MOVI, Chile’s first movement of

independent vintners now has 18 members. The requirements

for membership of MOVI are that they should be small and

quality-oriented, make wine personally, and craft it to reflect

a particular vision. Visits will be lead not by marketing people

or hired hands, moreover by the very owners or winemakers

who are intimately involved in the production process. This

programme highlights a handful of such wineries. Lacking the

vast infrastructure of the ‘big players’ – no busloads of

tourists, no in-house wine store, and in most cases not even a

tasting room per se - the visits are all about the excellent

wines. Although the definitive programme will be informed a

week prior to your arrival, wineries that may or may not be

visited include Starry Night, a producer of stunning hand-

crafted fine wines, Kingston Family Vineyards, recognized as

among the best wineries in Chile, especially for its stunning

Pinot Noir, Garage Wine Company, to try its renowned

Carignan, and Villard Estate. Perhaps you will end up helping

with the harvest or having a barrel tasting. Little about this

programme is set in stone. Due to the size, character, and

activities of the wineries on the day, those included will vary

from one tour to the next, making for the most exclusive and

unique experience.

Tastings will focus on premium wines, both red and white,

accompanied by local cheeses and other delicacies. This will

Page 9: ITINERARY FOR CHILE AND BOLIVIA ITINERARY Chile & Bolivia ... · independent wineries in the central coastal region that few have even heard of, but really should. Wineries located
