  • Southwestern Minnesota is not without its share of rivertowns and many unique travel adventures. The headwaters of the Minnesota River are near the Minnesota/South Dakota borders and havebeen a transportation corridor for many cultures over thousands of years. Clusters of villages ofAmerican Indians and communities grew up along the Minnesota River and created much of thehistory we long to experience through our travels.

As the gateway to the Wild West, southwestern Minnesota seems to have found a special place in allthe hearts of our forefathers. Today we enjoy unique culture and history as we follow along theLaura Ingalls Wilder Trail, perhaps stopping in Walnut Grove during the infamous Wilder Pageantheld each summer. Among the many historical monuments and museums in this region, the PipestoneNational Monument is a must see. This area is the crossroads to all walks of the Native Americans. For thousands of years Native American Plains and Woodland Indian tribes traveled great distances tothe sacred pipestone quarries where stone used to fashion ceremonial pipes is found. Native Americansstill quarry the red pipestone and visitors are encouraged to watch live demonstrations of pipes andcrafts being carved. No visit to the Monument is complete without a walk through the coteau prairieand a view of Winnewissa Falls. Today you can still participate in a PowWow, mine for pipestone andenjoy an authentic Rendezvous, and on the flip side experience the latest in Wind Technology with1000 giant wind turbines near Buffalo Ridge.

Nature is very much in abundance here with over 150,000 geese and ducks at Lac Qui Parle, and thebuffalo really do roam in Blue Mound State Park (makes you want to sing a tune doesnt it? Oh giveme a home where the buffalo roam). Did you happen to know that Minnesota has its own salt lake?It does indeed, and you could win at trivia with that question!

Additional highlights in this region are many, and include big slides and boat rides, lakes and pettingzoos, apple orchards and autumn fun with pumpkins, festivals and Minnesotas Country and Rockand Roll Hall of Fame, and the list goes on.
