RELIGIOUS ART IN THE ALPINE VALLEYS
The high valleys in Savoy, the land of sacredart, offer a varied religious heritage, whoseoriginality is mainly expressed by theprofusion and the richness of its baroqueart. Maurienne, Tarentaise, Beaufortainand the Val d’Arly have numerous chur -ches, chapels, sanctuaries and shrines
The Middle AgesFew vestiges remain from before the yearone thousand, but they are remarkable.Beautiful chapels dating from the end ofthe XV century and the beginning of theXVI century have been decorated withmural paintings created by Piedmont andLombard workshops. Cathedrals, churchesand rural chapels reveal Romanesque orGothic elements.
Baroque art : a new styleIn the XVII and the XVIII centuries, andeven at the beginning of the XIX century, the development of alpine baroquerevealed a profusion of gilt and colours,in this this new art designed to prefigurethe beauty of paradise.
The neo-classical Sardinian currentThis new style, inspired by antique temples, developed between 1815 and 1860, theperiod when Savoy once again becamepart of the realm of Piedmont-Sardinian,and lasted up until the end of the XIXcentury. These churches of an imposingsize are mostly decorated with trompe-l’œil mural paintings.
The XX and XXI centuriesThere were few works up until the thirties, then, after the destruction of the SecondWorld War, numerous edifices came to bebuilt. In the sixties, vast churches andchapels, with a resolutely modern design, were constructed near to industrial sitesor in the winter sports resorts.
XX° e XXI° secolo Pochi cantieri fino agli anni Trenta, poi, dopole distruzioni della Seconda Guerra mon -diale, numerosi edifici sorgono.
CATHOLIC REFORM ANDMOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES
Religious baroque and the historical contextAt the end of the Middle Ages, thesuccess of Protestant reform obliged theCatholic Church to react. During theCouncil of Trent (1545/1563), the impor-tance of religious imagery for instructingfaithful believers was reaffirmed, CharlesBorromée, archbishop of Milan, wrote Dela construction et l’aménagement deséglises (1577). Thus spiritual renewal foundits inspiration in the artistic Italian Renais-sance style with curves, trompe-l’œil,wreathed pillars and a profusion of adorn-ments for celebrating the glory of God.Baroque art was dominant in Europe fromthe XVII century to the XVIII century. Thenew priests were better trained in the
seminaries, and better supervised by the bishops who regularly visited theirparishes. At the beginning of the XVIIcentury, they supported the parish com -mu nities during the vast reconstructionmovement to embellish their edifices.
A society project Although the clergy assumed its suppor -ting role, particularly verifying the icono-graphy of the painted décor or the altar -pieces during the works, the works under-taken in the churches were initiated by thelocal parishioners. In the same way, it was they who hired theartisans and the artists and collectivelybore the expense. This real society projectfilled them with pride and strength andreinforced the ties between the inhabi-tants.
5
(1545/1563), riafferma l’importanza delleimmagini religiose nell’istruzione deifedeli.

RECONSTRUCT AND EMBELLISH
A new architectureThe churches and chapels of mediaevalorigin were therefore enlarged and trans-formed according to a specific, almostidentical, plan. The main aspects of theworks involved insulating the edifices, creating large opening to allow light topenetrate and renewing the fittings
The AltarpieceOf a sober external appearance, baroquechurches house a wall of images at theend of their choirs: the altarpiece, a gildedor polychrome panel, placed behind the altar and sculpted in stone pin. In theform of a triumphal arch, with an upward-looking aspect it is structured around thetabernacle with curved lines, convexities, relief, undulations and balusters. Twolateral panels which generally accentuatethe wreathed pillars, frame the painted orsculpted central panel. Under this group oflevels is to be found the tabernacle. As inantique Rome, the levels are separated byan entablement, the attic being surmoun -ted by a broken design or a curvilinearpediment, or sometimes a canopy. The altarpiece serenely plays the mostmagnificent role in the catechisms andincludes, under God’s benevolent autho -rity, the Father sitting enthroned on theupper level, and the Virgin and the Saints that the community invoked to help in caseof sickness in humans, cattle and plants, accidents, avalanches and climatic uncer-tainties. Paintings and statues largely repre-sented them, celebrated and served by agathering of graceful and smiling cherubs.
The artistsMost of the sculptors, gilders and paintersgiven the task of embellishing the chur -ches originated from the States of Savoy-Piemont. The people from Valsesia inPiemont were well established in Taren -taise. In Beaufortain, Maurienne and theVal d’Arly, the local artists worked together(like the Dufours).
RICOSTRUIRE E ABBLLIRE
