Streamline processes and drive efficiency with accurate, real-time data as goods move through your operations

As companies drive toward efficiency, they look to Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to automate and streamline their supply chain and logistics operations. Impinj Item Intelligence provides key information about the location of pallets, packages or individual items, such as parts and assets, as they move in, out, and through a business. Impinj connects information about these items with existing software systems to automate the processes that run businesses.

The Impinj platform provides Item Intelligence—real-time, actionable information about an item’s identity, location and authenticity. Item Intelligence allows companies to automate processes for efficiency and make smart business decisions using quantitative information rather than guesswork.

The Impinj platform uses RAIN RFID, a wireless communication technology that uses radio waves to identify and track items. RAIN RFID takes the barcoding concept and digitizes it for the modern world.

With RAIN RFID, organizations can automatically:

• Verify that a pallet, box or package contains the correct items

• Verify pallets and boxes are placed on the right truck as they move in and out of facilities

• Ensure traceability as goods and materials move along the supply chain

• Keep track of expensive and important assets and supplies

Technical advances in RAIN RFID have lowered costs and improved tag performance, making adoption and utilization easy and affordable. RAIN RFID systems can uniquely identify one or thousands of individual items, simultaneously, in close or far range and without direct line-of sight reading.

One Infrastructure, Many Solutions

The Impinj platform is a comprehensive set of RAIN RFID endpoints, connectivity and software. The platform elements are open standards-based, but also designed to work better when deployed together. By choosing solutions that use the Impinj platform, businesses can grow and adapt their deployments over time with multiple applications built on one infrastructure. The Impinj platform also makes it easy to manage RAIN RFID devices and monitor the health of those devices.

SUPPLY CHAIN & LOGISTICS SOLUTIONS

Supply Chain Visibility

Having real-time visibility of goods as they move along the supply chain is not an easy task. Manual processes are slow, inefficient, and error-prone, causing delays and increased costs. With the Impinj platform, organizations can gain accurate and real-time Item Intelligence as RAIN RFID tagged items are stored and flow through the supply chain.

Carton Contents Verification In pick-and-pack operations or other packing assembly processes, accuracy is critical. While you can increase accuracy by having your staff validate the contents of the package before it’s shipped, this takes time and labor and can still introduce human error. Impinj RAIN RFID solutions provide automatic verification that can occur after the package is closed and sealed and while the package is moving along a conveyor line. If the contents don’t match, the package is diverted for appropriate handling. Verification can be performed on any size of container—boxes, trays, or reusable containers. And it’s fast—operating at line speed.

Shipment VerificationOne key visibility challenge occurs during the receiving or shipping of goods and assets through loading dock doors. Due to manual scanning and paper-based processes, mis-shipments, lost efficiencies, and traceability errors often occur. With an Impinj RAIN RFID solution, goods and assets can be tracked as they move in and out of a facility. By connecting the data about these tracked items with the systems that run shipping and receiving, businesses gain insights that can further automate processes. More importantly, Impinj solutions deliver real-time visibility, creating confirmation or exception alerts, as well as initiating shipping and receiving workflows that are often manually done today.

Pallet Contents Verification Packing, staging, and loading goods on to pallets or other large containers are often manual tasks. Get every pallet loaded and unloaded quickly and correctly by automating the verification step. Impinj RAIN RFID solutions provide instant verification that the right items are on a pallet and eliminate the time spent hand-scanning barcodes. Alerts let the packer know when wrong items are included or if the right items are missing. And, the receiver knows that the contents match the bill of lading.

Returnable Transit Item (RTI) Tracking Track reusable containers to ensure timely returns, adequate inventory, and scheduled maintenance conformance. Automate the RTI management process by sending alerts to internal and external operations personnel of missing, lost, or past-due RTI returns and maintenance.

Equipment Tracking Preventing line-down situations in the supply chain is challenging. Critical equipment like forklifts, pallet jacks, and bin carts transporting materials must be in good service and available or line-downs and inefficiencies can occur. Manage valuable equipment to increase utilization, manage maintenance, comply with safety requirements and improve efficiency.

Tool Tracking Track critical tools, gauges, and fixtures to quickly support assembly and logistics operations. Drive efficiency in changeover and maintenance processes with RAIN RFID tagged tools and avoid line-down situations.

Hazardous Materials Management Track hazardous materials to ensure proper handling, orderly storage, and traceability. With accurate and real-time location of these materials, ensuring compliance and personnel safety can be automated. The Impinj RAIN RFID solutions can provide non-conformance alerts when unauthorized movement and storage locations occur.

Asset Management

Assets that support supply chain and logistics are critical to operational workflows. Locate assets in real-time to reduce operational delays and prevent line-down situations. Save time and lower costs for additional assets with an asset tracking solution powered by RAIN RFID. Drive accuracy, efficiency, and accountability to your asset management processes and access history logs if issues arise.

RAIN RFID is a form of wireless communication that uses radio waves and low-cost passive tag chips to identify and track objects. RAIN RFID takes the barcoding concept and digitizes it for the modern world, providing the ability to:

• Uniquely identify an individual item beyond just its product type

• Identify items without direct line-of-sight at a distance of up to 30 feet

• Identify thousands of items per second, simultaneously

• Identify specific location of items to within 1.5 meters

How it works:

1. RAIN RFID tags are applied to the item, box, package, pallet or other unit.

2. A connectivity device (e.g. reader or gateway) is used to send a wireless signal that identifies andlocates the tagged item. Readers can be held by a person or installed in doorways, hallways orceilings to keep track of tagged items in large spaces.

3. Data from the tags is transmitted to a software application – typically the shipping and receivingsoftware – that applies an action or designated business process. For example, comparing thelist of tags on a pallet with the list of items that should be loaded on to that pallet.

RAIN RFID DELIVERS BUSINESS RESULTS

Johnson Controls is an industrial technology company focused on building efficiency, batteries and energy storage and automotive seats. The company implemented a RAIN RFID system to track inventory of close to one million reusable shipping boxes, storage crates and specialized containers. The system allows Johnson Controls to recover missing assets, reduce the number of replacement containers needed, and quickly count containers and racks. They were able to achieve a return on investment in under a year.

The Climate, Controls and Security (CCS) division of United Technologies Corp. provides heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration technology for residential housing. CCS’ Collierville, Tennessee facility uses RAIN RFID to track component assembly and shipment of finished goods in order to improve efficiency, safety and quality of their assembly line and shipping processes. RAIN RFID-tagged items are monitored throughout the assembly line and as they are transported out of the plant’s dock doors. The RAIN RFID system allowed CCS to increase productivity by 30 percent, reduce shipping errors by 80 to 90 percent, and improve worker safety.
