This year, the Tour de Francewill commence in Liege in theWalloon (French-speaking) area ofBelgium on July 3rd, and it willwind its way anti-clockwise roundFrance, through Normandy andBrittany, passing through thesemi-mountainous area called theMassif Central before reaching thePyrenees. Only a short time afterthat, it will pass through the Alpson its route back to Paris where itfinishes on July 25th.

It will be a Tour like no other,for a number of reasons. LanceArmstrong will be attempting tobecome the outright record manwith six wins. Correspondingly,because of the design of its route,it will be the most open Tour inyears. The only time trial whichwill feature in the first half of therace will be the team time trial onstage 4, but the Tour Organizershave brought in a ground breakingnew regulation. No team will loseany more than 2 minutes 30 sec-onds on the day, meaning thatthere will be no big deficits for theclimbing teams when they reachthe Pyrenees. Ignoring the moun-tain time trial finishing at Alped’Huez, there are only two atsummit finishes this year - in thePyrenees, back-to-back on stages12 and 13, at La Mongie andPlateau de Beille, respectively.

There will then be a mountaintime trial on stage 16 from Bourgd’Oisans to the top of Alped’Huez right in the middle ofthree major days in the Alps. Thiswill be of 15.5kms (just under 10

miles) in duration, and it will rep-resent around 40 minutes of sheerhell, even for the top men. Themajor flat time trial of 55kms(about 35 miles) is very late in therace this year on the penultimateday.

It is difficult to try to read theminds of the organizers in theirquest for an “open” Tour this year,but I have put my interpretationon it. Throughout the first half ofthe race, there is no major obsta-cle that could open up large timegaps between the major players.Correspondingly, the tough roadsin the Massif Central could stimu-late some breaks that would shuf-fle lesser-known riders up the gen-eral classification, with the teamsof the top riders keeping closewatch on each other. This meansthat a less-expected rider may bein yellow as the Tour reaches the

We are traveling onceagain with the English company,Graham Baxter Sporting Tours.We signed up for a tour that willbe staying just under one kilo-meter from the top of L’Alped’Huez, and plan on cheeringArmstrong on to his sixth Tourvictory.

Last year, the ride guide forour tour group was TomMcCall. Tom is a seasoned“Veteran Leaguer”, as the age-challenged racers in England arecalled. I was impressed withTom’s understanding of the Tourand familiarity with the racers.As such, I asked Tom to writean exclusive preview to the Tourfor cycling utah, and we areglad to present that to you. Tomalso graciously wrote a shortarticle on one of our localfavorites, Levi Leipheimer,which we have included as well.

Levi Leipheimer (Rabobank) hashad a hard time over the last year.To succeed in pro bike racing in theEuropean arena, you need talent,strength of character, and an ele-ment of luck. Leipheimer has talentand strength of character in abun-dance, but he has been deserted bylady luck.

Leipheimer burst into the scenein 2001. Having spent some timewith the United States based Saturnteam, he moved to the US PostalService team, and it was during the2001 Tour of Spain (Vuelta aEspaña) that he achieved a sensa-tional result. He was there primari-ly to work for US Postal’s RobertoHeras, but Heras was not goingquite well enough to win.Leipheimer, however, had been rid-ing so strongly that he was up withthe leaders, and in the time trial onthe penultimate date, he produced asensational ride, finishing second byjust fourteen seconds to SantiagoBotero, who was to go on to win theWorld Time Trial Championship.This ride meant that Leipheimerleapfrogged over his teammate, andhe ended up on the podium in thirdplace overall.

This ride brought him to theattention of the powerful Dutch out-fit Rabobank, and they offered hima contract, as they could see him asa potential Tour de France rider.2002 was a dream transition year for

him. He won a mountaintop stageof the tough Route du Sud stagerace at Plateau de Beille en route towinning the race overall. He thensubsequently reinforced his positionwith the superb performance in hisfirst Tour de France to finish eighthoverall.

After this result, he had greatself-belief, and with the agreementof Rabobank he prepared speciallyfor the 2003 Tour. He maintained agradual build-up in the spring withthe aim of achieving peak fitness forthe Tour. He was twelfth in the pro-logue Time Trial, underlining hisgood form, but it all came to a haltat the end of the first road stage .He was unfortunate to run into amass pile up in the final 500 metersof the stage, just out of sight rounda sharp bend leading into the finish-ing straight. He hit the ground hard,and he was unable to continue, hav-ing fractured his hp and his pelvis.

Pro bike racing is an unkindbusiness at times, and Leipheimerhas spent the best part of the lastyear wondering about what mighthave been. However, he was com-peted well in the tough early seasonevents in the South of France, and,once more, he is looking forward tothe Tour de France. Coincidentally,one of the Pyrenean stages of thisyear’s Tour finishes at Plateau deBeille, and he will be thinking of hisprevious triumph there in the Routedu Sud, and wondering if lady luckwill be finally on his side.

Punishing climbs, white-knuckle descents, and the pursuitof high-caliber singletrack(arguably the purest form ofmountain biking) lure many tothe world of fat-tire cycling. Butfor those who are just starting outor for families with children,something a bit more mellowmight be in order. Like a radiostation that plays easy-listeningtunes rather than head-bangingrock, the Beaver Creek Trail isperfect for those seeking the“softer side” of mountain biking.You won’t have to worry aboutdicing it up with a pack ofwannabe NORBA champs,they’re too busy charting theirheart rate on marathon ridesacross entire mountain ranges.Instead, you’ll likely encounterother first time bikers with theirchildren, too, along the BeaverCreek Trail.

Beaver Creek is neither dirtroad nor singletrack rather a“mega-track.” It’s part of theTaylor Fork ATV trail system.Sure ATVs tend to be noisy andobtrusive, but they can packdown a fine trail for mountainbikes. The route parallels a gentlymeandering creek pooled occa-sionally by beaver dams. On oneside lies the creek’s willow- andgrass-filled flood plain, and onthe other rises forested slopes ofthe lower Uinta Mountains.Midroute, the trail passes throughthe Beaver Creek Campgroundand Picnic Area, where you canrestock on water and have asnack under a shady pine.

Details:

From the roadside trailhead, crossthe wooden footbridge overBeaver Creek and follow the traileastward alongside the lush floodplain. Tackle the short modest hilland then breathe a sign of reliefknowing that the tough part isover.

One-half mile down the trail,

stay straight where a dirt roadenters from the left and straightagain where the Cedar Loop forksright (a good climb for racers intraining). The route changes fromATV trail to dirt road then backto ATV trail before passing theBeaver Creek Campground and atrail information board 3 milesfrom the trailhead. The mapdirects ATV users toward “CedarLoop- rough and rocky” (uphill)or “Beaver Creek--not so tough”(straight). Hmm, what do you saywe go straight? Go throughShingle Creek Campground andstay on a westward bearing wherethe trail joins and branches from

campground roads; then pass areflective pool created by thetrail’s namesake rodents.

Both bumpy and smoothtreads continue to take you alongthe fringe of mountain and valleyuntil you enter a small clearingwhere the Pine Valley Trail forksright. This is the recommendedturnaround point because the trailahead descends steeply to a fordof the North Fork Provo Riverand to Pine Valley Campground.Retrace your tracks to the trail-head while vengefully bombingdown that hill near the start.

For a shorter version, embarkfrom Shingle Creek or BeaverCreek Campgrounds at midroute.For more miles, either head southon the Pine Valley Trail as far asdesired, or splash through theNorth Fork and continue on theextended Beaver Creek Trail 3miles more to Soapstone BasinRoad. Want to go big, really big?Pick up a copy of the Taylor ForkATV Trail map from the KamasRanger District and chase downCedar Loop. And yes, it is “roughand rocky,” but nothing NORBA-caliber legs and full suspensioncan’t tame.

Location: 6 miles east of Kamason the Mirror Lake Highway.

Distance: 9.5 miles out-and-back.Tread: ATV trail. Think of it asan ultra-wide singletrack.Physical Difficulty: Easy.There’s a pesky little hill at theoutset; thereafter, it’s about as flatas a true off-road ride can get.

Technical Difficulty: Low-mod-

erate. Mostly packed dirt butthere are rocky sections that maymake your saddle spank your buttlightly.

Elevation gain: The route is vir-tually flat. Gain is a “whopping”600 feet. You’ll feel fresh at day’send not bonked.

Finding the trail: From the inter-section of Main and CenterStreets in Kamas, travel east onthe Mirror Lake Highway/UT 150to milepost 6 at the Wasatch-Cache National Forest Boundary.The trailhead is on the right/southside of the highway.

Additional Notes:You must pay a recreational

use if you park and recreate any-where along the Mirror LakeHighway: $3.00 per day or $6.00per week.

Maybe metropolitan planningorganizations (MPOs) can becomegreat catalysts for promoting bicy-cling. Not familiar with your localMPO? At least one in Utah isdoing a variety of works for bicy-clists. But a national effort toassess MPOs’ work on cyclists’behalf came up with an incom-plete portrait for both theMountain West states and thenation. The reason: a lack ofresponses.

In conjunction with theNational Center for Bicycling &Walking (NCBW), the Associationof Metropolitan PlanningOrganizations sent a questionnaireto all 340 MPOs, of which 144responded. Mountainland (Utah,Summit, and Wasatch Counties)was the only MPO in Utah orIdaho that provided a detailedreply. So it’s not clear if surveyresults reflect the national picture;it’s possible those with the mostdeveloped bicycling and walkingprograms were more eager torespond. Also, NCBW notes thatit’s not always possible to separatethe work of MPOs from the stateand local agencies they have towork with.

Since 1973, federal law hasrequired states to establish MPOsto develop TransportationImprovement Programs in eachurban area with a populationabove 50,000. States fund MPOsthrough the Highway Trust Fund.Most MPOs, however, don’t man-age or fund programs directly,leaving construction and planningof bicycle facilities to transporta-tion departments or other state andlocal agencies. The vast majority(90 percent) of MPOs get somefederal TransportationEnhancement money. About 28percent get federal CongestionManagement Air Quality (CMAQ)grants, which they can use to pro-mote biking to relieve traffic con-gestion and air pollution.

(The referenced federal funding

programs are currently in limbo asCongress continues to work on asurface transportation bill that wassupposed to be ready by lastOctober.)

Based on the survey results,NCBW released "Taking Steps:An Assessment of MPO Supportfor Bicycling & Walking." Thestudy cites good works done bythe Mountainland MPO but saysthat nationwide, MPOs couldpotentially do a lot more to pro-mote cycling.

Mountainland said it wasengaged in at least five activitiesto promote cycling. TheMountainland MPO staffer whocompleted the survey wrote thatthe Utah Department ofTransportation eagerly cooperatedwith it, saying state officials"invited me to help them writetheir pre-construction manual, tospecifically focus on non-motor-ized transportation….Also, I workclosely with each community tobegin to incorporate non-motor-ized transportation into their cityplans. We have come a long way."

Mountainland falls way aheadof most MPOs in that category, asNCBW reports "few MPOs report-ed an effective relationship withtheir state department of trans-portation."

The Intermodal SurfaceTransportation Efficiency Act(ISTEA) of 1992 gave MPOs thepower to approve spending of fed-eral transportation funds and eachmust create a transportation plancovering all users, from motoriststo bicyclists. This created powerstruggles as "most state depart-ments of transportation resistedsharing their power with MPOs.For their part, many MPOs wereill prepared for the changesbrought about by ISTEA. Afteryears of minimal funding andresponsibilities, MPOs were thrustinto the position of being keyplayers in transportation plan-ning," NCBW concludes.

Today, some MPOs merelycarry out the wishes of state and

local governments, while othersactively participate in creating bik-ing strategies, NCBW reports.Most at least pay bicycling lip ser-vice. Almost three-quarters ofMPOs responding to the surveyassigned bicycle/pedestrian issuesto a specific staffer (some considerbicycle and pedestrian issues sepa-rately; others didn’t). The 27 per-cent that didn’t assign specificstaffers spread the responsibilityout "under the assumption thatbike-ped issues are everyone’sresponsibility."

Asked what they did for bicy-clists, MPOs most commonly sited

helping local governments withplanning, workshops, and creatingbike maps.

Only three percent of MPOsreported spending 40 hours a weekor more of staff time on bike-pedissues and 53 percent reportedspending five hours or less. "Evenwith a small staff of five people,this would yield no more than 2.5percent of total time spent onthese modes. We then consideredthe 58 percent of MPOs who didnot…respond to our survey, andshuddered," the report says.

On the other hand, NCBWacknowledges that no one has ever

calculated a recommended numberof hours or percentage of stafftime that should be devoted tothese issues and time spent doesn’tguarantee results. (Also, numberof hours will necessarily vary withstaff size.) "So, we simply suggestthat MPOs estimate the amount oftime they spend supporting bike-ped issues, ask themselveswhether they are achieving thegoal set by (the Federal HighwayAdministration) in interpreting(federal surface transportation

On the whole, most Utah cyclistshead to Evanston and the classicheld there every year. Despite this,a number of resilient Whoo-tanschoose to stay on home turf and bat-tle for gold and yellow jerseys at theUtah Summer Games in Cedar City.Sure, it’s true the fields are smaller,and only a few USCF/UCA regularsattend, but USG brings out loads ofjuniors, women and masters of allages. The cycling event at the sum-mer games is a four race omnium.Each of the four challenges is aunique test of a rider’s ability, if anage group or category is small; thereare other fields to race, including

your own personal records. Askanyone who has raced Cedar morethan once how they did, and moreoften than not you’ll hear; "I was 30seconds faster than last year" or "Igot second in the crit, the highestplace I’ve ever got".

Long story short, if it’sThursday—you race the clock.Brian Jeppson, owner of CedarCycles has been unbeatable openingmorning for years, ascending the 4mile, 2,000 foot climb to the "C’that looks over the valley of Cedar.Brian’s 20 minute sprint up RightHand Canyon is quickly becomingthe stuff of legends, as most mortalsneed a calendar to time the painfulslog to the top.

If there’s no wind, plan on sheepto keep things interesting for theTime Trial on Thursday evening.Warming up near the intersection ofLund Highway and Midvalley Roadon a windless late afternoon, therejust had to be woolly fauna waitingsomewhere down the road to messthe race up. Chris Rowley of Ogdenblew past all five sheep, apolice/shepherd and more than a fewracers as his time of 21:25 was morethan a minute and a half faster thananyone else who sauntered up anddown the 10.3 mile course.

Friday is the Chekshani CliffsCriterium, a fast and breathtakingvenue right at the foot of the famousred cliffs of southern Utah. Four

races were scheduled, two early 30minute crits, one for boys and menover 60 and the second for an allwoman field. Thirteen year oldBruce Hoffman of Layton won thefirst battle of the day, followed byBrian Head’s D.J. Morrisette in thewomen’s skirmish thirty minuteslater. Road Race Saturday fires upearly, and is 25, 40 or 60 milesdepending on your age group, gen-der or category. The sixty mile guysdisappear early to drive up highway56 over Iron Mountain to Newcastleand back. Cameron Hoffman dis-tanced himself on the finishing hillfrom a group of four to take top

honors in the open USCF category.A lead pack of ten were in site ofthe 1 mile to go banner in the fortymile race when first year junior,Bryson Garbett, and master, SteveWilcox, split the leaders on the finalclimb of the day. Mark Zimbelmanwas able to reel them back just intime to nip a win at the line. Thefirst race of the day to finish was thetwenty-five miler, won by BruceHoffman, as he was followed close-ly by twelve year olds, women of allages and folks over eighty.

"Raise the Bar" was the USG crythis year. The commitment pro-duced for the games was evident asgoals for faster personal records(PR’s), higher placing and motiva-tion to achieve one of Quinn’s allu-sive yellow jerseys was apparenteverywhere. The passion to "Raisethe Bar" this year can be illustratedby stories contenders brought toCedar City.

"I got the hole-shot off theline and was the first one to thesingletrack. Trevor Simpor,Stein Erickson Sport, and Iworked to get away from thepack, but Todd Tanner,Cannondale Mountain BikeTeam/Guthries, kept us in sight.At the end of the first lap, I hadput about 10 or 15 seconds onTrevor, and Todd had bridgedup to him. As I rode throughthe singletrack at the start of mysecond lap, Todd bridged thegap quickly. He was going veryhard. I grabbed his wheel andhung on to the base of the

climb. He was really pushing,but once we hit the climb, thepace fell and I had a chance torecover a little. Todd was feel-ing it on the DH - picking linesand pegging it. He was ridingvery well. I had to scramble tokeep up with him. He caughtsome air off the last dirt humpand started to lose air pressurein his rear tire. He pulled over afew minutes later, and I rode theremainder of the second lap andall of the third lap alone. I usedmy third lap as a tempo lap andthought I could ride the fourthand final lap at my pace, butThomas Spannring, TeamEuclid, caught and passed meon the doubletrack climb. Ipushed my pace hard to get infront of him as we rode up theswitchback climb, and kept himbehind me on every passingopportunity. I was suffering a

little and my legs started tocramp near the end, but I rodeclean through the rock gardenand was the first one around thecorner to the finish line. I thinkthat Thomas had an exceptionalfourth lap, but I definitely hadthe advantage being in frontthrough the rocks and first onearound the final corner."

Big-time cycling returns toUtah this summer with the inau-gural Park City Cycling Festivalpresented by USA Cycling,August 12-22. The Festival is an11-day cycling extravaganza host-ing the 2004 NationalChampionship competition forJunior, Espoir (U23) and Mastercategory road cyclists, with plansfor the Elite cyclists to competehere in 2005 and 2006.

Hosted by Park City and co-managed by Blue Wolf Events andTeam Big Bear, the Park CityCycling Festival is bringingtogether Junior, Espoir and Mastercyclists at the same location forthe first time at a NationalChampionship event. When it’sall said and done, the Festival willhave crowned 100 NationalChampions in men’s and women’stime trial, criterium, and road raceevents in numerous Junior, Espoirand Master classes. The Festival isalso featuring the first-everwomen’s Espoir road race andtime trial, newly created eventsreplacing the current formatcrowning the Espoir women’snational champion. In addition,the Park City Cycling Festivalalso includes tandem racing inboth Elite and Master classifica-tions. When the medal count istallied, individual National ‘Starsand Stripes’ jerseys will be award-ed to 24 Juniors, four Espoirs and53 Masters, while tandem champi-onships will go to three Elite and16 Masters teams.

Park City and the surroundingarea provide unique and challeng-ing courses worthy of crowning aNational Champion. The roadraces start and finish adjacent toFestival Headquarters, TheLodges at Deer Valley, near thebase of Deer Valley Resort andfeature a tour of the outlying com-munities, while the criterium racesare being held on a circuit withinthe Resort itself. The time trialhighlights one of the nation’s mostunique landmarks, the Great SaltLake, with the course on AntelopeIsland State Park.

The Park City CyclingFestival’s web site (www.parkcity-cylcingfest.com) is chock full ofinformation, from registration and

eligibility to course maps, profilesand a daily schedule of the event.In addition, the site lists volunteeropportunities, other activities todo in the Park City area for com-petitors and spectators alike, adining guide, and a link to speciallodging packages for Festival par-ticipants.

Eligible cyclists must be a U.S.citizen or a permanent resident -for junior 17-18 and U23, youhave to be a US citizen, for theother age groups, you can also bea permanent resident. Cyclistsmust have a valid USCF annuallicense with correct categoryaffixed to it prior to check-in (noonsite upgrades will be done) orUCI international license.Additional rules are availablewhen registering. Licenses can bepurchased online atusacycling.org. (Why not give it atry?)

All Individual Time Trials areopen to all categories (Master,Espoir and Junior) with male cate-gory 1-5 eligible and female cate-gory 1-4 eligible. The road racesand criteriums carry slightly dif-ferent eligibility standards.Masters men age groups 30-34through 50-54 must be at least aCat 3, while ages 55-59 through70+ will race in categories 1-5.Masters women age groups 30-34through 40-44 must be at least aCat 3 and age groups 45-49through 60+ will race Cat 1-4.Category 1-5 racers are eligible inJunior male age groups 10-12 and13-14, while age groups 15-16and 17-18 must carry at least aCat 3 license. Junior females 10-12 through 17-18 will compete inCat 1-4. Both male and femaleEspoir cyclists planning to com-pete in the road races must carry aCategory 1 or 2 license.

The schedule for the Park CityCycling Festival is broken intoroughly two time periods, Aug.12-17 for all Masters, tandem andEspoir men, while the Juniors andEspoir women will compete Aug.19-22. The NationalChampionship jerseys will beawarded each evening from theTown Lift Plaza on Park City’slower Main Street.

At some point in mostcyclists’ lives they feel a desireto try something bigger, a needto do something that can setthem apart or mark a personalmilestone in their cycling. Ifyou’re in this frame of mind youmight want to consider trying aChallenge Ride. Challenge Ridescan simply be defined as cyclingevents that are among the mostdifficult category. Usually theyare held during a single day, butsometimes span over severaldays with no break in the action.Often, they are not races, justevents of unusual difficulty orduration. Simply completingthem is a significant accomplish-ment regardless of time or plac-ing. These rides include both onand off-road events, are usuallyover 100 miles in distance andsometimes have 12 or 24 hourtime limits.

Challenge Rides are not newto cycling, many have beenaround for a long time. TheGrand Tour, held by the LAWheelmen is currently in its46th year and offers 200, 300,and 400 mile routes. The DavisDouble Century is celebrating its35th anniversary and theMarkleeville Death Ride is in its24th year. Other classic eventslike RAAM and the FurnaceCreek 508 are well over 20 yearsold. Over the past 10 years how-ever there has been a markedincrease in the number of eventson the calendar with a trendtowards more and more difficultone day events. Often the moredifficult the ride, the more popu-

lar it is, with events like theDeath Ride selling out 2500spots months in advance.

An organization calledCalifornia Triple Crown Series,created by ex-Utahn ChuckBramwell offers special recogni-tion to riders who complete 3double centuries in a single yearout of 15 available qualifyingevents. Chuck started this seriesin 1990 with just 4 qualifyingevents and awarded 32 TripleCrown winners. In 2003 wellover 400 riders were awardedthe Triple Crown, and 2004 is ona pace for another record break-ing year.

Utah, not to be outdone byanyone, has its own schedule ofChallenge Rides. The LotojaClassic (203 miles) and the 24Hours of Moab are perhaps thebest known Utah events. Threeother newer events, theBrianhead Epic 100 (offroad),The Endurance 100 (offroad inPark City), and the PanguitchDesperado Dual (200 mile roadride) are both making their markon Utah cycling. Each one of

these events will demand themost of you and in return pro-vide the greatest sense of accom-plishment. A cyclist will oftenlearn the most about themselveswhen they must dig the deepest.The satisfaction taken from fin-ishing an event is often propor-tional to the effort expended inaccomplishing it.

Think you can’t do one ofthese big rides? Think again! Adouble century is within thereach of almost anyone who cando a century ride. All it takes isgood preparation, a good atti-tude, pacing yourself, and eatingand drinking properly during theevent. Go ahead and GO BIG,you will surprise yourself onhow well you will do.

Among the diminishing school ofartisans in the cycling world, includ-ing frame builder, painter, silk sew-up "seamster"?, we now must offi-cially include the wheel builder.Second possibly to the framebuilder, the magical voodoo per-formed by a great wheel smith hasbeen one of those grand goldenthreads linking cycling’s past to itpresent. Will there be a link to itsfuture?

In the not too distant past, a bikeshop’s wheel expert was usually awise old sage who had been handeddown the knowledge and traditionsof the bicycle wheel and its secrets.Someone who could transform a pileof spokes, hub and rim into a won-der of science - or magic - thatcould rocket a racer to a sprint vic-tory or be the reliable barrier thatkept the tourist’s feet from having tohit the pavement on a long journey.

The wheel builder would have anassortment of odd, purpose-built andusually shop-made tools to manipu-late a bent rim, remove a flat spotbetween the spokes or cut notches ina hub flange so that it would acceptflat bladed spokes. Typically thesewere made from wood and shapedto either provide pressure or supportto particular rims or areas of rimswhile the builder manipulated a sickwheel to health. There is a very

much-copied tool in many oldershops that works wonders in pullinga flat section of rim back into thecorrect radius to ride smoothly andundetected on the smoothest roads.This tool was never commerciallyavailable, but I have seen at least tenversions, in different areas of theU.S., all very closely matched. Thewheel builder’s wisdom ever pre-sent.

A builder will have declared hisfavorite spoke wrench, amid a work-bench of many. A chosen tool fromthe more than dozen designs avail-able, all made for simply turning aspoke nipple. It would be the onethat felt just right in the hand anddidn’t seem to jump to the shopfloor between turns. I have an oldfriend who used to build wheels forseveral professional racers inEurope, and he unexplainablyprefers the plastic Spo-key wrench.It seems like a toy to me, compared

to the nice weighty metal alterna-tives, but hey, he’s the magician. Heis the wheel builder, and I don’tquestion his choice.

Knowledge is a key to being agreat wheel builder as well. To be atrue wheel builder, as opposed toone who just builds wheels, onemust have knowledge of the rider’sintended use for the wheels, and therider’s style of riding - is the ridersmooth and fluid or does he wrestlethe bike side to side and miraculous-ly hit every pothole in his path? Hewill match spoke strength, lacingpattern, spoke tension, and rim tobest suit the rider. The wheel builderwill gauge the rider’s size andstrength and the road conditions hewill most frequently ride. Then thebuilder must know products, thereattributes and shortcomings, in orderto match all of these factors into awheel set that will give years oftrouble free service.

Above all else, a wheel buildermust know and possess the mostimportant characteristic: Patience.One must be willing to live in aworld of quarter turns on the spokenipple and repeated de-tensioning ofthe wheel to arrive at spoked nir-vana, a wheel that is both round andtrue, with consistent spoke tensionthroughout. Those who are in a rush,or those being rushed by others,must resist the temptation of short-cuts. This is the underlying wisdomthat has been passed down since the

spoked wheel came into existenceover one hundred years ago, replac-ing the heavy and non-elastic wood-en spoked wheels before it.

Once perfected, although it’s inpoor conduct to intimate that a per-fect wheel has been built, the wheelcan withstand nearly any traumaintroduced to it. It has the ability tosupport its weight a hundred fold,while propelling its load rapidly andobeying the rider’s input faithfully,even if that input directs the wheelto the possible peril of a railroadcrossing or curb. The wheel builder,with the proper knowledge, canbuild a wheel that will withstand itall and then some. But alas, theirdays are dwindling.

There is no longer debate overpizza and beer after hours in thebike shop as to the merits of tyingand soldering spokes, whether thespokes of a radial wheel are bestinserted inbound or outbound. Orfor that matter, whether there shouldeven be radially laced wheels. Thereis no more experimenting with thecool-looking twisted mess called the"race lace" or "Clark Kent", pattern.Nor is it unusual any more to see arear wheel with radial lacing on thenon-drive spokes, or lacing a 36hole rim to a hub with fewer holes,skipping holes in the rim, on thenotion that if lighter is truly better,then the material missing in a rimwith more holes must logically belighter and better. Well, maybe all

was not sage wisdom in those daysof the wheel builder’s rein.

Today’s wheel experts are work-ing at computers and in wind tun-nels, and the scientific knowledgethat is being passed down is possi-bly more concrete and verifiable,but it’s not as magical or romanticas debating whether your wheelbuilder is as good as mine. Or asquirky. The artistry is lost to finiteanalysis, production costs and mar-ketability. It’s easier to build awheel, by machine, with a big pieceof extruded aluminum rim, cool-looking minimal spoking, and a pro-prietary large flanged hub, and mar-ket it as strong and stiff. If you putenough metal into the rim, you caneven make it aerodynamic.Marketing those attributes is easy,and who needs a wheel builder?

Are traditional wheel buildingmethods lost to a new generation ofriders? Perhaps, just as the methodsof frame artisans who could similar-ly create a bike that was tailored toits rider have been eschewed duringthe past decade. Although there areseveral keepers of the flame, and asmall resurgence of interest in tradi-tional hand made frames hassparked an even smaller resurgenceof interest in classically built wheelsutilizing traditional, reliable andgreat-riding wheels. There is hope,and everything is cyclical, indeed.

This being a new column, I am hoping that it will generate moreinterest in the bicycle commuter, or those that use their bike in autilitarian manner. If you wish to be profiled, or know someone thatshould be in this column, please contact me [email protected]. You do not have to be a supercommuter,even fair-weather, part-time commuters are welcome to share theirstory. The first lucky winner of bicycle fame is Ashley Patterson.Over the past 10-15 years Ashley has embraced a lifestyle thatreduces pollution' utilizes recycling or has simply reduced her needsto become more earth friendly. In doing so, she has now put herexpertise in a business, The Green Building Center (1952 East on2700 South) where you can obtain earth friendly paints, flooring, orsimply a candle holder made from recycled bicycle parts. (I obtainedmy copy of "Divorce your Car" from here). The Green BuildingCenter is a Pedal Pass Participant.

Cycling Utah: What inspired you to take up the bicycle to go towork? A.P.: At first, I realized that it didn't make sense to rush homein my car to go out on my bike for exercise or drive to the spa. Whynot do both, go to work and get exercise. This also was not onlybenefiting me, but I was also reducing air and noise pollution, andreducing congestion on the streets.

C.U.: How long did this transition to the bike take? A.P.: I startedout dedicating one day a week to riding to work, then 2 days andsoon it became easier and more natural to jump on the bike to go towork. I'm continually doing more errands, visiting friends, or goingout for meals on my bike. I have also incorporated using the bus andTrax as well as trying to car pool when possible to reduce my caruse. I once took a week long class in Orem using a combination ofTrax, the bus and my bike to get to and from there. Overall I havereduced my car use from 12,000 miles/year to 4000.

C.U.: Do you have any tips for other commuters? A.P.: I prefer pan-niers over backpacks or messenger bags. Lights are a must if youride in the dark-they are cheep insurance like a helmet. Fenders aregreat for keeping you clean in wet weather.

C.U.: One of the questions I consistently hear is safety on the bike.Is this more a perception? What are your thoughts? A.P.: I had someinitial concerns, especially as a woman, but I think mostly it was justtypical anxiety in making the change to a bike as a means of trans-portation. I don't have a big problem with safety. Riding defensively,being courteous, make yourself seen, and just using good judgementis all it takes. Cars and bikes can co-exist on the roads.

C.U.: Anything else that you wish to say? A.P.: Just get on your bikeand go to work. I will be waving and saying hello to you as we crosspaths.

COMMUTING

Pyrenees, and, if I read correctlybetween the lines, I think the orga-nization would like this.

It may appear that this year’sTour has been scripted in such away as to give the maximumchance to a climber, with minimalrisk of time-loss before thePyrenees. However, I do not thinkso, as the mountain climbing daysare much less severe than inrecent years, so maybe this “open”Tour quest is genuine. The firstday in the Pyrenees on stage 12could be so much harder, as itonly has the Col d’Aspin en routeto the summit finish at La Mongie,a ski resort only part way up theCol du Tourmalet. The really bigPyrenean stage could be the nextday, with four major climbs enroute to a summit finish at Plateaude Beille. The Alpine stages,apart from the Alpe d’Huez timetrial, are slightly disappointing, asmany of the really big classicclimbs have been avoided. Thetwo highest Alpine climbs, the Colde la Madeleine, and the Col deGlandon are on the stage afterAlpe d’Huez, but, again disap-pointingly, they are both coveredin the first half of the stage.

Let’s look at the form of themajor players.

Lance Armstrong (USPostal/Berry Floor). He is in goodform, having undertaken hisdetailed approach to the Tour.Followers in the USA will beaware of his success in the Tourde Georgia not too long ago, andhe has maintained steady progresssince then. He has undergone aslight set back in the just-finishedDauphine Libere stage race whichhe won overall last year. He wasbeaten by two minutes in a timetrial up Mont Ventoux by SpaniardIban Mayo, who went on to winoverall, with Lance finishing 4thoverall. I see this purely as anirritation, but not a serious set-back for Lance. Mont Ventoux istwice as long as Alpe d’Huez, andLance will be fit and ready on thedate. Last year, after four years ofdomination, Lance was made tofight like never before, as he suf-fered two days of dehydrationafter the furnace-hot time trial atGaillac. We all know the story ofthe magic day at Luz Ardidenwhen Lance conquered hisdemons, but it is a different routethis year, and different circum-stances.

Iban Mayo (Euakaltel-Euskadi).He has had a good build-up to theTour, with a string of single andmulti-stage victories in Spain,prior to the Dauphine Libere. Hisconfidence must be high, and hethinks he can win this year. Watchfor him in the Pyrenees. He willbe shouted on by the mass hyste-ria of the Basque fans who turnthe mountain slopes into a sea oforange.

Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile). Just whenwe were all wondering if Jan hadbeen eating too many cream cakesagain this year, he has a good top-ten finish overall in the Tour ofGermany, and he follows this upwith a win of the Tour of

Switzerland. He ran Lance closelast year, but I feel even he wassurprised at his own form, and hedid not capitalize on one or twoopportunities when Lance wasstruggling. If he goes as well aslast year, and he has more belief,we will have a race on our hands.On top of that, the prodigal hasreturned to the might of the T-Mobile team.

Tyler Hamilton (Phonak). Tyler ison good form this year, after a winoverall in the tough Tour ofRomandie in Switzerland, and,fingers crossed, he is injury free.He fancies his chances this year,and any friendship with Lancewill be put on one side temporari-ly during battle. He is withPhonak this year, who must besignificant in having one of theworst team designs!

Alexandre Vinokourov. Third lastyear, the aggressive man fromKhazakstan prepared specially forthe Tour this year. However, hehas now been sidelined by injuryand will not be in the Tour.

I don’t see anyone else being aserious overall contender, butthere are several outsiders.

Christophe Moreau (CreditAgricole). The top French finish-er last year, he is on good formwith a recent overall win in therevamped and renamed Midi Librestage race. However, his build isagainst him, and he strugglesagainst the lightweight climbers inthe high mountains.

Roberto Heras (Liberty Seguros).He has left Lance this year andgone to Spanish team LibertySeguros. However, no sign of realform this year yet.

Denis Menchov (Iles Balears-Banesto.com). Last year’s bestyoung rider has made goodprogress this year with an overallwin in the Spanish stage race, theTour of the Basque Country.

Gilberto Simoni (Saeco). Aninteresting entrant. The two-timewinner of the Giro d’Italia lookedat one time as though he couldwin for a third time this year, buthe was eclipsed by a younger and

stronger teammate, DamianoCunego. Gilberto was not veryhappy about it at all, but he had totow the team line. Cunego is notriding the Tour, so there is just achance that Simoni may havesomething to prove!

In the other competitions, theGreen Jersey will probably oncemore be between Baden Cooke(Fdjeux.com) and RobbieMcEwen (Lotto-Domo).However, Alessandro Petacchi(Fassa Bortolo) is also there, freshfrom a record nine stage wins inthe Giro. If he can ride to the fin-ish, that may be another matter,but he has not managed it yet.The race is also brightened by thepresence of Mario Cipollini(Domina Vacanze) in his swan-song year, but his main aim willprobably be to win a stage.

In the mountains competition,look no further than the “house-wives’ favorite” Richard Virenque(Quick Step-Davitamon).Although he has been a bad boy inthe past, the public loves him. Hewon one stage last year, and wonthe climber’s competition for arecord-equaling sixth time.

In summary, this year’s Tourmay have genuinely beendesigned by the organizers to pro-vide an open race. Because of therace profile, it would seem unlike-ly that any of the race favoriteswill gain much time on each otherbefore the Pyrenees, and that isprobably where the first big shoot-out will occur. The Alpe d’HuezTime Trial will be crucial as anytime losses may be difficult tomake up without too many days togo.

If I were a cynical person, Iwould say that the course has beendesigned to make it difficult forLance Armstrong to achieve therecord six wins he so covets.With no more than two and a halfminutes to be gained in the teamtime trial, there will be climbingteams swarming all over him inthe Pyrenees with minimal timedeficits. Once more, and for dif-ferent reasons, Lance is going tohave to show courage as well asaggression to win. I still think heis capable.

A comfortable bicycle tour isall about what you do (anddon’t) bring along.

In fact, the only thing thatreally separates vehicle-support-ed cyclists from self-supportedtourists (besides two horizontalfeet of bulky panniers and theoccasional rear trailer) isincreased restrictions on thebasic necessities of survival.

On one side of the spectrum,there are private touring compa-nies, who provide four-coursemeals cooked in Dutch Ovensand cots placed in spring-bartents, already set up the minutecyclists arrive at camp. One theother side, there’s Hans, aDenmark native I met on thewinding roads of northernBritish Columbia last summer.

Hauling only two tiny rearpanniers, Hans was on a tear topedal from Anchorage, Alaska toRaleigh, North Carolina in lessthan six weeks. With an itinerarythat topped 100 miles every day,Hans explained he could onlyafford to carry 12 kg of gear.This included two water bottles,a one-man tent, a sleeping bag, arain jacket, a thin pad to insulateagainst the sub-arctic nights, twochanges of cloths, tools, and thesupply of oatmeal that he ate,cold, for almost every meal.

Somewhere in the middle arethe rest of us, willing to carrymore weight for the sake of sani-ty (image eating ONLY cold oat-meal through hundreds of milesof vast Canadian wilderness),but still unclear on what exactlyto bring. After all, even if ourdaily grind falls short of 100miles, we still have to be able topedal our gear over those steephills.

A good rule of thumb toremember for any bicycle vaca-tion (because, yes, it is a vaca-tion) is to never take what youdon’t need, but never leavebehind what makes you trulyhappy. With this in mind, here isa list of gear that will support atrip of any length, hold up inalmost any kind of weather, caneasily fit in four panniers or alarge trailer, and ranges between45 and 65 pounds total weight(including bags and racks).

In the front panniers:

• Sleeping bag: small syntheticbags rated to 15 or 20 degreesare most ideal. Look for bagsthat weigh three pounds or less. • Camping pillow: These are anecessity if you ask me - youcan buy a travel pillow for as lit-tle as $4 and bunch it into thepocket of your jacket if needed.• Sleeping pad: Self-inflatingpads compress into small spacesand still make comfortable bed-ding.• Clothing: No matter how longyour trip, keep it light. Also,keep in mind that even a shorttrip in Utah’s climate could

experience rain, wind, snow,sleet, dust and even ice. • three nylon or lycra shortsleeve tops• two pair padded lycra cyclingshorts• one pair synthetic fabric longjohns• one pair nylon pants• four pair synthetic fabric socks• one polar fleece jacket• one water-proof parka withhood• one pair water-proof gloves• one pair bicycling gloves• face/ear warmerI have been on two-week tripsthat ranged from 27 degrees andsnowing to 90 degrees and drywith 30 mph headwinds. I usedevery single thing on this list,and was thankful to have it.

In the handlebar bag:

• Tools: Allen wrench, two sparetubes, spare rubber, tire repairkit, screwdriver, and pocketknife.• Energy bars: This is my cover-up term for chocolate andgummy bears. Others havefound the real thing to be satis-factory.• Sunglasses• Pencil and paper, for quicknotes• Cash: You never know whenyou’re going to bike by an icecream shop. • Weather radio. If there’s amajor thunderstorm coming, it’snice to have a heads-up.

In the rear panniers:

• Water: Carry a lot in Utah,which, in general, is a dry,remote place. I have foundmyself carrying up to two gal-lons in my pack. I also strap ahydration pack to my back,which would make puristscringe, but I’m willing to enduream occasional shoulder crampfor easy-to-access water. • Tent and tarp: Small, water-proof backpacking tents areideal. For two people, look forsomething that weighs 6 poundsor less. Use the tarp to coverbikes when it rains.• Camping stove: A single burn-er camp stove that utilizes thosepropane/butane disposable canis-ters are the best way I’ve foundto carry enough fuel for an entiretrip – and carry several, becauseyou never know where you’regoing to find more.• Aluminum backpacking pot:works as a pot, plate, bowl andcup.• Sunscreen: I’m forced to useSPF 30, and easily go through afour-ounce. bottle in a week.Others are blessed with moresun tolerance than I am, but ifnot, it’s probably to most impor-tant thing you’ll carry next towater.• Bug spray: Remember: On abicycle camping trip, you’re out-doors 24/7.• Other toiletries: toothpaste,

toothbrush, camp soap - whichworks as shampoo, dish washingsoap, hand washing soap, andlaundry soup.• Two to four days worth offood. The groceries that travelbest are: dried instant beans,instant rice, soft tortilla shells,pasta, packets of pasta sauce,carrots, onions, apples, orangesand peppers, dried soup packets,chocolate, cheese (doublewrapped), pancake mix, granola,dried milk, bagels, tuna fishpackets, mixed nuts — and oat-meal, if you want to mix it up abit. • Zipping plastic bags, all shapesand sizes. These act as water-proofing for stuff when it rains,garbage bags, and food storagebags.• Headlamp: Use a flashlight incamp, and as a double headlighton night rides.• And, of course, the optionalstuff that makes a traveler com-plete - camera, notepad, sketchbook, laptop computer, pencils,cards, pens, magazines, books.Don’t leave all "optional" stuffbehind. Whatever comfort youmake up for in lost weight you’lleventually lose in sheer campboredom.

The above gear list is fairlycomprehensive, although thereare many items left off that somepeople would deem completelynecessary, and there are items onthe list that others would neveruse. While some, like Hans,choose to go the minimalistroute and concentrate on mileageand speed, most tourists willfind themselves wasting moretime seeking out the creaturecomforts they neglected to bringalong. When planning a bicycletrip, it’s important to write up alarge list, assess every singleitem on it, and ask yourself, "inwhat situation would I use this?"Then determine if you actuallywill.

Bicycle tour packing alsoinvolves a certain amount of cre-ativity. Dave Iltis, the editor ofCycling Utah, suggested carry-ing a thin sheet of packing foamto utilize as insulation againstwet benches and picnic tables.Another tourist I know uses gal-lon-sized plastic bags and rubberbands to keep her feet dry inrain. Yet another, who can’tafford the luxury of front pan-niers, and can’t fit them on hismountain bike anyway, straps aplastic milk crate to his rear rackfor extra storage space. "BikePacking," like any great travelexperience, is all about makingthe most with what you have.

Close to 250 riders participatedin Help to Heal's Porcupine GrillBig Cottonwood Hillclimb onSaturday, June 26th. The racepreceded the ICS mountain bikerace at Solitude which saw anadditional 200 plus racers andmade for a big day of racing in thecanyon.

The licensed and citizen's cate-gories started separately on the 14mile, 3880 vertical foot jaunt fromthe Porcupine Grill at the mouthof the canyon to Brighton SkiResort. Junior rider Mike Sohmtook top honors in the citizen'scategory with a time of01:12:52:05 followed by EricBonder at 01:14:28:01.

In the USCF race, all cate-gories started together and so the

lower categories could see howthey rate against the seasoned vet-erans. Johnny Osguthorpe (OgdenOne), fresh off a seventh placefinish in the National Road Race,took command of the race earlyon, "I wanted to be by myself, so Iattacked at every steep spot." AtStorm Mountain, the lead groupwas down to eight, and by the S-Curve, it was down to just JohnnyO, Joseph Smith(Porcupine/Contender), and NormBryner (Guthrie), a nineteen yearold category three rider. The threeworked together from the S-Curveuntil they reached the Solitude SkiResort when the fun and gamesbegan. "Norm attacked at entryone. I waited for Joseph to do thework, and then jumped across to

Wow! What a month Junewas. These past few weeks havebeen absolutely amazing playinghost to some of the best racingon American soil. The finalspots for the 2004 U.S. OlympicTeam have been filled, theUSPRO has been crowned, andNational Champions have beenhonored. I guess all of this wasjust an appetizer for what’s tocome; the Tour de France. Wenow have what many have beencalling in cycling "the biggestmonth of the year" to look for-ward to; July and the Tour. Aseverybody knows LanceArmstrong and the US PostalService are going for theirrecord sixth consecutive Tour deFrance victory this month whichhas everybody begging the ques-tion; Can Lance do it?

As in any sport there are dif-ferent levels of competitiveness,interest, and competition, but itseems that just about everycyclist is interested in LanceArmstrong and the Tour deFrance. The Tour is an incredi-ble event, but even more so, ittakes an incredible athlete tocompete in and finish the Tourde France. Park City local,Marty Jemison, did so in both1997 and 1998 while riding forthe US Postal Service. The aver-age Tour rider produces between5 and 6 watts of power per kilo-gram of body weight at lactatethreshold with GC contenderspushing upwards of 6 watts ormore per kilogram of bodyweight. Recently, Dr. AndrewCoggan and Rik O’Shea esti-

mated Iban Mayo’s strength toweight ratio on his record55’51" ascension on Le MountVentoux during the 56thCritérium du Dauphiné Libéré tobe over 6.5 watts per kilogramof body weight.

So what does this all mean?What does power tell us? Powermeters allow us to measure theforce (work) produced whilecycling. This force is measureddifferently depending on thepiece of equipment used but isnormally measured in either thehub (Powertap) or crank (SRM).This force allows us to docu-ment results (work), so we cancompare athletes side by sidewhere heart rate and other indi-cators can’t. It’s similar toweight lifting. By using stan-dardized testing protocols ath-letes can compare themselves totheir competition and can mea-sure their progress or lossesmore accurately. So if a Tourrider produces upwards of 6watts of power per kilogram ofbody weight at lactate threshold,you’re probably asking yourselfwhere does the Category 1,Category 5 and recreationalcyclist lie in comparison?Research conducted by Dr.Andrew Coggan shows that amale Category 1 cyclist pro-duces upwards to 5.25 watts perkilogram of body weight in a 20minute lab test with the averagefalling around 4.75 watts.Category 5 cyclists fall between2.3 and 3.3 watts per kilogramof body weight while Category1 female cyclists producebetween 3.62 and 4.44 watts perkilogram of body weight.

Category 4 females producebetween 1.99 and 2.81 watts perkilogram. By using these num-bers and tests we can easilydetermine a cyclist’s perfor-mance level in comparison tothe best cyclists in the world.

Power training is a very com-prehensive and informativemeans of training, betteringmore popular training tools suchas heart rate monitors andcycling computers. There arethree primary power meters onthe market today, the Powertap,SRM, and the Ergomo. Lookingat these three systems they areall noticeably different. ThePowertap is a hub that is builtinto most any rim while theSRM is a crankset and theErgomo is a bottom bracket.Two versions of the Powertapare available to consumers, thePowertap Pro and StandardPowertap with prices rangingfrom $800 to $1,500 dependingon make, model and wheelbuild. SRM offers three modelsstarting with the Amateur at$1,800, the Professional whichretails for $2,700 and theScientific (well, we won’t gothere). The Ergomo is thenewest edition to the powermeter family retailing for$1,300. Each of these powermeters have their advantagesand disadvantages like any pieceof equipment, but we’ll leavethat for another day.

Ten, fifteen, or twenty yearsago, a coach comparing trainingregiments and progress wouldhave probably focused onmileage, training phases, time toride given courses, and percent-ages of rides spent in certaintraining zones; whereas now, welook at power data, VO2 andlactate testing, as well as otherlab and field tests in addition tothe above mentioned. Sincepower allows us to measure theactual work an athlete is per-forming it makes for a moreaccurate tool for day to daytraining. Heart rate is very infor-mative and is another greattraining tool, but can vary drasti-cally due to training load, sleep,diet, stress, and daily activities.Power allows us to focus on thework done and maximizing anindividuals training to get themost out of it. Most athletes andcoaches base training solely offheart rate which can be very

limiting where as power givesus a more accurate reading ofeffort and intensity. Manycyclists consider depressed heartrates as a sign of fatigue or over-training. This can be true inmany circumstances but can alsobe false. Normally after a hardday of training or racing, you’llfind lower (depressed) heartrates. Does this mean you arefatigued or over-trained? Notalways! Power allows us totrack the work done. Justbecause your heart rates areeither depressed or elevateddoesn’t mean that you can’t pro-duce the power needed for agiven workout or effort. In mostcases you can still produce thepower, but your heart rate maynot accurately reflect the effortexerted. This can lead individu-als to either work too hard to gettheir heart rate in the prescribedzone or to do too little work.Training with power allows indi-viduals to more closely monitortheir training by effectivelymeasuring their efforts and per-formance leaving out the guesswork commonly found withother training tools.

Looking back at Dr.Coggan’s data, if we took a 160pound male (72.7 kg) at theCategory 5 level that individualwould produce an average of203.5 watts (based off producing2.8 watts/kg, the average foundfor a Cat. 5 male) for a 20minute effort while a Category 1male (of the same weight)would produce an average of345.3 watts (based off the aver-age of 4.75 watts/kg for a Cat. 1male). A GC contender in theTour (of the same weight) pro-duces upwards of 480 watts dur-ing the same 20 minute test. TheTour de France is an incredibleevent with the battles in themountains, the speeds in thetime trials, and the exciting fin-ishes in the sprints, but evenmore so, is the performance ofthese great athletes.

Salt Lake City rider JeffLouder (Navigator's Insurance)has had several good results thispast month. In addition to win-ning Gateway and Park Citycrits and the overall at the localBig 5 Criterium series, he hadseveral other top placings.

On May 22, Louder took tophonors in stage 4 of the Tour ofConnecticut, the 53-mileWaterbury (CT) Climber's Cup.On the 4th lap of 13, a break-away was able to establish itself.Navigators' strong-man JeffLouder was joined by ChrisWherry (Health Net), WilFrischkorn (Colavita), andImanol Ayestaran (Webcor) on aquest to steal the show. Withrepresentation from the 4strongest teams in the race, thegap climbed quickly to peak outat about 3:30 over the next 4laps.

The 4 'iron men' continueddriving on while the lap-cardscontinued to tick down. Most ofthe driving was being performedby Louder and Wherry as theirbreakaway companions had littlereason to contribute to the effort.Frischkorn was covering theattack in defense of teammateMcCormack, while Ayestaranhad team leader Chris Hornerback in the main field. With thelap cards showing 4-to-go,Ayestaran lost contact with theother leaders and lost groundquickly.

As the leaders entered thefinal 1000-meters around theTown Green, the 3-man sprintlooked more like a track race aseach rider cautiously watchedthe others, than the finish of oneof the most demanding coursesin North America. With all 3coming to the line together, itwas a bike-throw that gave Jeffthe winning edge over Wherryand Frischkorn. It was a well-deserved victory for Jeff Louder,and his Navigators Insuranceteammates.

On May 29th, in the "Frank'Nap' Torpey Memorial - Hills ofSomerset County" Road Race,Louder finished second to team-mate David McKenzie as thetwo crossed the line togetherabout 1-minute ahead of 3rdplace finisher Alejandro Acton(UPMC/Mike Fraysse) in this87-mile benefit race for the U.SBicycling Hall of Fame(www.usbhof.org). The defini-tive break came with about 30-miles remaining when 5 ridersescaped, and were soon joinedby Jeff Louder to make it aneven 6. With 10-miles remain-ing, McKenzie attacked and cre-ated a lead of nearly 1-minuteover the rest of the lead group.Louder soon bridged up, and theduo stayed out in front until theycrossed the finish line together,in front of the crowd on theAT&T Bridgewater campus.

Finally, in the G.P. Cyclistede Beauce, Canada (2.3), a sixstage international stage racefrom June 15-20th in Canada,Jeff took the KOM jersey andfinished 15th overall at 4:44back from winner TomaszBrozyna of Poland.

On a gorgeous day at SolitudeSki Resort, Charlie Gibson(Racer's Cycle Service) and CindiHansen(Mtbchick.com/Cannondale) tooktop honors at the Chris AllaireUtah State Open ChampionshipsIntermountain Cup Series event onJune 26th.

The Pro men rode 20.7 milesover four big loops on a coursethat consisted of 80% single track.It was perfect for a championship.Ed Chauner, ICS organizer, notedthat "it's a great test of mountainbike skills. The course is decep-tive because there's so much sin-gletrack and technical descendingand climbing."

Lance Runyon (Stein EriksenSport/Sirius) took an early leadand looked smooth and fast on thetight descents. He held that leadover Gibson for the first two lapsbefore Gibson began to make uptime on the downhill and single-track climbs. "Charlie was ridingso smooth. He got me on thebeginning of the third lap. I rodeconstant my whole race. He rodefaster and faster," said Runyon.Gibson took the lead and extendedit to nearly two minutes by thefinish. "The course is so rough, sothe smoother the rider, the moretime you can gain through therough sections; and that's where Ican keep speed," said Gibson.Gibson and Runyon were fol-lowed by third place ThomasSpannring of Team Euclid. In thehunt for the ICS overall title,points leader Todd Tanner

(Cannondale/Guthrie) and secondrunner Trevor Simper (SteinEriksen Sport/Sirius) didn't havegreat days, finishing in 8th and9th respectively, but still main-tained their top positions.

The women's Pro categorystarted with a bit of see-sawingwith Hansen running past PamHanlon (Jan's) at one technicalspot on the course. The twostayed close together until acrashed sport rider got in the way."The sport men were in front of uson the downhill and she gotaround and I couldn't and I could-n't close it," said Hanlon. Hansenstayed out front but not withoutlooking over her shoulder: "Pam issuch a consistent climber and Iusually lose focus," said Hansen.

Hansen went on to win the 15.5mile, three-loop race despite a lastlap crash that left her a bit shakenbut unhurt save for a bit of roadrash. D.J. Morisette(Ellsworth/Copperchase Condos)finished third. Hansen currentlyleads Hanlon and Kathy Sherwin(Cannondale) in the season longpoints series.

Jon Gallagher took top honorsin the singlespeed category. Henoted that it was a "great course,great conditions, and great weath-er." The single speeders rode 14miles without shifters andGallagher had what he describedas a "no chain kind of day."

Colorado rider Cody Petersenused the strength of an impressivetwo-minute solo win in Saturday’sroad race over 10,700-foot BaldMountain to hold off competitorsand win the Pro 1/2 category atthe High Uintas Classic StageRace June 19-20 in Evanston.Bingham’s Cycling Team riderKris Walker of Pocatello put inpowerful efforts in both the roadrace and in Sunday morning’stime trial to capture the overallwomen’s title in the Pro 1/2/3.

Leaving his breakaway com-panions on Saturday’s climb andtaking King of the Mountain hon-ors, Petersen actually stretched hisadvantage on the descent into thefinish, taking the stage two min-utes ahead of Salt Lake City’sSandy Perrins of the Global PhoneSales-Healthy Choice team.Perrins won the sprint from chase-group companions Aaron Jordinand John Osguthorpe.

"I couldn’t believe how muchtime Cody got on the downhillbetween the summit and the fin-ish," Perrins said. "We werekilling ourselves --- three guyswho were flying and not letting upjust trying to bring him back in.He only had 30 seconds on us atthe summit, and he just stretchedit out."

In the next day's time trial,Perrins’ teammate Gardie Jacksonscorched the flat 10-mile courseon his way to a half-second victo-ry over Colorado rider ClaytonBarrows. Perrins was third in thetime trial, 10 seconds back.

But Petersen, losing only 15seconds to Perrins in the time

trial, was able to hold onto theoverall victory in the final-stagecriterium later Sunday afternoon,despite suffering constant attacksfrom Perrins' Global Phone Sales-Healthy Choice teammates.Barrows was first in the rush tothe line in the criterium, followedby David Harward and KevinNichol.

"We threw the book at himSunday, and he didn’t lose anytime," Perrins said. "Going in tothe crit, we knew the time gap wasquite a bit to overcome, but wewere going to make him earn hisvictory. We attacked heavily, buthe was strong."

Perrins took 2nd overall in thefinal general classification, fol-lowed by Barrows of Colorado.

The weekend’s perfect weatherwas a radical departure from lastyear’s rain, snow and hail during

the road race, and women’s win-ner Walker used Saturday’s pleas-ant temperatures to break away onthe Bald Mountain climb withNew Moon Media’s Laura Howatof Salt Lake City. Riders began topeel off the back of the groupsoon after the road turned itssteepest, eventually leaving onlyMiller and Howat together aheadof a hard-charging RydeenStevens, who took third in thestage.

Walker said she and Howatagreed worked hard together onthe descent because they fearedthat the always-tough Stevenswould be a threat in a sprint, andthey stayed away for a sprint fin-ish, which Howat took.

"Laura was climbing great,then we pushed really hard on thedownhill," Walker said. "We knewRydeen was chasing hard and

she’s a greatrider, so wetried to get asmuch time aswe could."

Walkertook theQueen of theMountainbonus pointsat the summitof BaldMountain in asprint. Theroad race thisyear wasshortened tofrom 80 milesto 50 milesbecause ofconstructionnearEvanston. AndHowat, who ismore at homein the hills

than on the flats, said the two

hammered the descent because theshortened road race suited herstrengths.

"This is not a climber’s race at80 miles --- at 50, however, theclimbers have a chance to stayaway," Howat said. "I’ve beenahead before at the top of thisclimb, but I always get caught. Sowe worked this one hard."

Howat said she knew she need-ed to get as much time as possiblefrom the field before Sunday’s flattime trial, but she lost 1:46 in thetime trial to front-runner KarenDodge. More important, she lost1:22 to Walker, who took second.Tiffany Pezzula was third

Pezzula won the Sunday after-noon criterium, followed byStevens and Dodge leavingWalker in first overall with Howatsecond, and Stevens rounding outthe podium.

Man, I’m sure glad that wedidn’t have to race on the roadheading up to Powder Mountain. Idon’t know what the grade it isgoing up, but it’s damn steep. Thebeauty about racing at PowderMountain, besides the scenery, isthat the race starts at the top. So,no climbing like Deer Valley, butthis fun, fast race course is diverseenough to challenge any level ofracer.

The weatherman’s rainy week-end prediction was fortunatelywrong as we were blessed withclear blue skies and cool tempera-

tures. The course had to be modi-fied slightly to avoid a patch ofsnow that was covering 15 feet ofthe trail, though competitors didn’tseem to mind less mileage, somedid mind less singletrack. "Thecourse description promised moresingletrack, there was nothingreally fun to look forward to,"mentioned Jean Carlan,Sugar/White Pine Touring, andwinner of the Sport Women.

The Pro Men’s field was 12strong at the startline. Many of theusual suspects were present andready to do damage. BlakeZumbrunnen, RevolutionMountain Sports, got the hole-shot

off the line and lead the field intothe first singletrack. As he round-ed the double-track corner anddropped onto the gopher-hole rid-den trail, Todd Tanner,Cannondale Mountain BikeTeam/Guthries, picked up the paceand passed him. " I didn’t want toget caught by the rest of the field,I just wanted to set a steady pace,"commented Tanner.

Chuck Gibson, Racer’s CycleService, pulled his way back tothe two leaders just asZumbrunnen attacked them on theroad climb. Unfortunately, a bro-ken chain kept Zumbrunnen fromfinishing his assault on the rest ofthe class, and Gibson and Tannerwere left out front to battle forfirst place.

Gibson set the pace for thenext two laps, but at the end of thethird, he made a small mistake,and Tanner took advantage of it.As he passed Gibson, he uppedhis tempo and opened a gap thatproved to be enough, as he rode infor first place. Gibson put in ahard fifth lap and finished just oneminute behind Tanner and LanceRunyan (Stein Eriksen Sport),wrapped up the podium in thirdplace.

As the three Pro Womenapproached the startline, it wasdecided that three, 30 minute lapsjust wouldn’t do. We wanted four.From the gun, I led the other twowomen into the singletrack, but itwas Pam Hanlon, Jan’s, who wasable to hang on. We rode togetherfor the next two and half laps untilI hit the short, muddy sectionbelow the switchbacks. I choosethe wrong line and had to get offmy bike. Hanlon rode past me andgained about ten seconds up theswitchbacks.

I followed her up the climbs,but wasn’t able to close the gapuntil we were on the road, startingour third lap. She got stuck behind

another rider going into the single-track, and hit a rock that had beenkicked up. I passed her as she wasfixing her flat, and I knew I had togo hard. Hanlon was an experi-enced rider and she had what ittook to pull her way back up tome.

I rode alone for the remainderof the race to take the top spot onthe podium, Jennifer Agger,Hoback Sports, finished second,and Hanlon recovered after herflat to place third.

I have often been asked, whenI tell people I am going to Francefor the Tour, if I am riding in it.Oh, the ignorant masses. I reply,“Are you going to play in theSuper Bowl?” This question,along with some explanation,hopefully dispels a serious lack ofunderstanding of the Tour. BobRoll has now written a book, TheTour de France Companion, thatcan do the same and much more.

The title page to Roll’s bookdescribes it as “A Nuts, Bolts andSpokes Guide to the Greatest Racein the World”. And an aptdescription it is. Roll’s book pro-vides a basic understanding of theframework, dynamics and historyof this exciting and excruciatingrace. A person who knows littleof bike racing can read this book,understand it, and be much betterprepared to follow and enjoy theTour as it unfolds. A more knowl-edgeable and experienced personcan also enjoy this book, pickingup tidbits of information andexperiences that only a formerTour rider with a unique gift forexpression can provide.

Consider a few of the chaptertitles: “A Century of GloriousCruelty”, “Climb andPunishment”, “Tour de FranceConfidential” and “Bob Roll’sUnauthorized and UnexpurgatedTour de France Alphabet”.Sprinkled in these chapters aresidebars such as “16 Reasons Whythe Tour de France is Better thanthe Super Bowl”, “Time Trial ofthe Century” on Greg LeMond’sTour winning time trial in the1989 Tour, and “Five LegendaryClimbs”. These descriptive titlesalone are enough to keep one’snose in the book.

While the titles are catchy, thewriting is also entertaining. Thisis a fun book to read. Those who

have watched Roll on the OutdoorLife Network have either laughedor cried at his hand movements.The advantage of the book, forthose tortured by Roll’s expressivehands, is that his personality andunique sense of humor comethrough while the hand motionsdo not.

The book contains nearly ahundred photos which I found tobe more than just filler. The pho-tos are entertaining and expres-sive, and give a unique glimpseinto recent Tours as well as Toursextending back to its initial years.It also has a section entitled,“More Nuts and Bolts”, appen-dices if you will, including “TheUltimate Tour de France TimeLine”, “Glossary: 20 EssentialTerms” and “Tour de FranceRecords”. This last was especial-ly interesting. I learned, amongmany other tidbits, that the UnitedStates is tied, thanks to 8 victoriesbetween Greg LeMond (3) andLance Armstrong (5), for 4th inthe total number of Tour victoriesby one of its own, and is only onevictory behind Italy.

While it may be adaptable totours in subsequent years, thisbook is very specific to the 2004Tour and Lance’s upcomingattempt to win a record-breakingsixth Tour de France. It includes amap of the 2004 Tour, a scheduleof the stages, and a description ofthe major climbs. Roll also goesinto depth on what it will take forArmstrong to win Tour number 6.

I was curiously surprised tofind the book dedicated to MarcoPantani. While a tragic figure,Pantani remained a popular personand rider with thousands, includ-ing apparently Bob Roll. While Ipondered the appropriateness ofthis in light of Pantani’s seriousdrug problems, I decided the dedi-cation was not surprising givenRoll’s obvious love and fascina-tion for Italian cycling. He evenspeaks Italian, you know, whilebeing unable to correctly pro-nounce “Tour de France” inFrench.

This book is an excellent mixof Tour history, commentary onthe 2004 Tour and on what it takesto ride and win the Tour, and plen-tiful information and statisticswithout inundation. It is relaxingand entertaining reading whilebringing understanding to theTour; and a great guide for thisyear’s race, indeed a good “com-panion” for the Tour.

What’s better than racingthrough a big field of wildflowersat the peak of their bloom on amountain bike? Racing through afield of wildflowers on a perfectJune day, on an great course, withthe springtime green of theWasatch Front surrounding you,that’s what. The preceding quizprovides a description of the per-fect setting for the June 6Bountiful Bomber Downhill race,stop #1 on the 2004 Utah StateDownhill Series. Because thisrace takes riders down nearly2000 vertical feet in just under 2miles of gnarly singletrack andjeep road, it passes through a lotof forest terrain in a hurry -- verygreen, cool and alpine at the startline up top; very hot, dusty andsweaty at the finish down below.From top to bottom, spectatorsand course attendants were all inagreement that it was indeed abeautiful day, but I’m guessingmost racers didn’t pay too muchattention to the wildflowers, astheir focus was on keeping therubber side down while rippingdown this notoriously steep andtreacherous descent. Either way,racing or just being there, it result-ed in a really fun day.

Racing the Bountiful Bombercourse is all about braking, bal-ance and overcoming the fear ofgoing over the bars into the trees;it’s not super-technical, but it ispretty damn steep in numerousspots. The course is so steep insome spots that past years’ racesintimidated quite a few "lessskilled" riders, prompting themnot to race after testing the courseout during practice runs. Thanksto the hard work of a few goodmen (and women), this year’scourse was modified to "flattenout" some of the steepest sectionsfor novice downhillers, while stillallowing the bad boys (and girls)to plummet down the classic falllines they so dearly love. Theeffort seems to have paid off as arecord number of Sport andBeginner class racers crossed thefinish line.

Keeping with BountifulBomber past history, the fastesttime of the day was not posted bya Pro or Semi-Pro racer, but, yetagain, a racer from the Expert cat-egory. Perhaps divine interventionwas somehow involved in helpingto maintain this bizarre tradition,as the fast time of the day wasposted by a guy who applied for aPro license, but was not grantedthe upgrade by NORBA! AddVon (VeeDub) Williams to the listof past Bountiful Bomber champsracing in the Expert Class: ChrisCanfield (2002) and Justin Alvey(2003). Von posted an extremelyfast (sick) run of 4 minutes and 51seconds, beating the fast Pro timeby nearly 6 seconds! Excellentwork, Von -- keep it up and thePro license is on its way. Theguys from Idaho are probablywondering when they’re going toget some press in this here racereport -- well here it is. ThePro/Semi-Pro class was dominatedby a pair of guys from the greatState of Idaho. Silas Hesterberg

looked like he was shot out of acannon as he ripped the BountifulBomber course to take first placein his class with talented Idahorival Moses Mexia taking a veryclose second. These two very fitriders were just fast enough to rel-egate local hero Pete Schaffer tothird in the Pro Men’s class. FaithBradley, Utah’s top female down-hill racer and defending UtahState champ, cruised to victory inthe Pro Women’s class.

This race featured the return tothe two-run format to Utah down-hill mountain bike racing. Racershad the opportunity to take twotimed runs, and count their besttime toward the final ranking.Racer feedback was extremelypositive; virtually everyone likedhaving the option of a second run.Since racers had to ride a shuttlevehicle to the start, the two-runformat saved the day for someracers who were late for their firstride to the top. The two-run for-mat will remain for the remainderof the series downhill this year.

law) – providing suitable accom-modations for bicyclists andpedestrians everywhere they arepermitted, and adjust their focusand time spent on bike-pedaccommodations to hasten theircompliance with this goal," thereport recommends.

Almost everybody, however, isat least considering bicyclists’needs, with 96 percent sayingtheir long-range transportationplans account for them and 92percent including cycling in trans-portation improvement programs.But a smaller percentage (78 per-cent) said they had a separatebicycle or bike-ped plan devel-oped or in the works.

Only 14 MPOs, however, haddeveloped plans with "measurablegoals," such as adding more pathsor bike parking. But NCBWacknowledges that such plansdon’t provide a panacea. Thereport notes a "lack of evidenceto suggest that plans with measur-able goals are more likely to leadto routine bike-ped accommoda-tions in all projects, an increase inbike-ped mode share, a reductionof bike-ped injuries, or any otherdesired outcome."

And it suggests "MPOs mightdo better to create plans with moregeneral goals, and work with localgovernments on building specificprojects likely to support thesegoals." Also it notes that somemeasurable goals are arbitrary –such as increasing the percentageof bike commuters or reducing thenumber of injuries by a given per-cent. Why shoot for a 25 percentinjury reduction instead of 50 per-cent one?

And only slightly more thanhalf said local governmentsendorsed or adopted their bike-pedplan. (In some cases, the localgovernment hadn’t adopted a for-

mal approval plan.) Most couldn’tsay that their state adopted theirbike-ped plans.

"In fact, we have no evidencesuggesting that the presence ofplans of any stripe yields positiveresults," NCBW concludes.

So instead of worrying aboutplans, MPOs may spend their timebetter by working with advocatesand creating public awareness ofbiking needs. They can increasecommunity awareness of the bene-fits of cycling, collaborate withstate and local agencies, and gath-er data. They need formats to takepublic input to get supporters onthe record. Methods can rangefrom hearings to public commentperiods to creating committeesmixing cycling advocates withplanners and public officials.About three-quarters of surveyrespondents said they had estab-lished at least one bike-ped com-mittee.

NCBW also suggests thatMPOs advocate using fuel taxes,tolls and vehicle registration feesto finance bicycling projects. Itsays MPOs need to educate them-selves as well as the public, noting"very few of them appear able todiscuss the costs and economicbenefits of (bicycling and walk-ing), let alone offer comparisonswith other modes or discuss therelative merits of related spendingprograms. We found only 10MPOs who had calculated, withsome degree of rigor, the percent-age of transportation funds allo-cated to bike-ped accommoda-tions." MPOs said they couldn’taccurately gauge the amount of ahighway project that went for theaccompanying bike path, forinstance.

(Boise) won the PoolGel USCF Women's Elite NationalChampionship Road Race and earned a spot in the women’sOlympic squad after besting future Olympic teammate and winner ofThursday’s time trial, Christine Thorburn, in a two-up sprint afterspending half the day off the front of the peloton.

A field of 111 women rode six laps of the course for a total of116.8km.

With three laps remaining, Armstrong charged hard up the 1kmclimb that ascended Ford St. and Thorburn was the only rider whohad enough in the tank to follow. As the two rode away from themain group behind, T-Mobile unsuccessfully attempted to sendanother rider across to help Armstrong but the added help wasn’tnecessary as Armstrong easily outsprinted Thorburn at the finish.

"I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a kid," explainedArmstrong. "With about two laps to go I was getting emotional. Iheard we had about a three minute gap and I wanted to start crying"

Armstrong used to be an elite-level triathlete but switched to thelower-impact sport of cycling after being diagnosed with osteoarthri-tis in both of her hips.

Armstrong’s victory also earns her the right to wear the stars andstripes jersey for the next 365 days as the USCF women’s elitenational champion.

the trip. Having done some of thepreparation, like cooking thespaghetti sauce & soup, at homebefore the trip and freezing whatcould be frozen. One night Grantproudly boasted about the threevarieties of cookies his daughterhad baked for us. We ate grilledchicken, baked potatoes, pan-cakes and scrambled eggs.Chicken noodle and cream ofpotato soups, stir fry vegetablesand hot dogs with sautéed onionsand baked beans, (Niel's secretrecipe.) I mustn't forget thebanana cream pie, brownies,homemade cookies and good ol'yellow cake. All we could eat!And I did!

From time to time we visitedlittle towns where we could get

lunch at local restaurants. We atecheeseburgers in Blanding,Navajo tacos in Mexican Hat andwonderful salads in Dove Creek.We had filling, inexpensivebreakfasts in Mexican Water andthe Ute Mountain Casino. Onemajor highlight that will probablybring Connie from Florida backagain was the huge, single scoopice cream cones available inMexican Water at the end of theday's ride.

Staff members had that littlesomething extra that breathes aspecial ambiance into a camp-ground for tired, hungry, some-times smelly bicyclists. We weremollycoddled. We were pam-pered. This ride was one hell of aparty disguised as a bike tour.

A U.S. National off-roadJersey holder, Chanda Jeppson, hadone goal in the road race; stick withthe group and finish with thepack—something no women hasdone in the forty mile race. Everytime the pack surged up IronMountain, Chanda dug deep to keepthe pack from slipping away andthen pulled hard in the rotation tobring the break back to finish strongwith the leaders. Seventy year oldJim Demet was like a giddy teenag-er at all the races. Jim overcameopen heart surgery, a hip replace-ment and the struggle of dietaryoverindulgence to have his best yearever. Finally Dan Weston raised thebar by training a dedicated bunch ofhigh school athletics from Loganthis year. It looked as if theLogan’s elite had invaded thejuniors and brought with them thefear most cat ones and twos are sofamiliar with to the games.

It's the end of October, near theend of the cycling season and Ineed to diet. I just peddled mybike 300 miles in six days (fivedays of actual riding.) Impossible!I thought, then tried to zip up mypants again. Fact is, I didn't have aweight problem before the trip.

It happened on the MonumentValley and Four Corners Touroffered by Tailwinds BicycleTours. Grant Aagard took a fewnatural ingredients, beautifulweather, spectacular scenery and apeek at an ancient, thriving cul-ture. He spiced these up with real-istic distances, comfortable camp-grounds and good food. Lots andlots of good food.

I rode with Jan T., a flowerlover who enjoys identifying flow-ers as she rides along. She had

been riding all summer so she wasready for a lot of miles.Personally, I hadn't trained proper-ly for this ride and expected toride the broom wagon part of theway. I never did because I wasmesmerized by the vast expansesof desert bordering the route. Thesame view gave some riders theimpression there was nothing tosee. Wrong. A rainstorm fell a fewdays before our visit to open blos-soms of purple and yellow asters,evening primrose, desert mallow.Even the tumbleweed and thatpesky puncture weed sported tiny,colorful flowers. The earth itselfspoke of geologic history. Risingcliffs showed layers of purple,green, brown, white, red andorange exposed by erosion andvolcanic action. Maybe there wasa prehistoric lake. I heard someargument about Lake Bonneville.

The moods of the desert changedas the sun traveled from one sideof our world to the other.

Mornings were cool. No hurry.Lots of hot water, compliments ofNiel, the equipment trailer driver,for Folgers coffee bags (yuck),Bigalow tea and oatmeal. Riderspicked from a variety of yogurtsand bagels. I have been on lots oftours in the past. No tour groupever offered breakfast as part ofthe package. Or snack stops on theroad, or cold morning apparelpick-up when the temperaturewarmed. I was even given an extrablanket to use one surprisinglycold night.

Scenery changed dramaticallyday by day. It changed subtly fromhour to hour. Navajo homesteadssat not too far from the highway.Just as our Navaho guide on theMonument Valley tour bus said,there were lots of vehicles near thehogans including one workingpick-up truck and three or fourrelated cars for spare parts.

Often there were dogs guarding

small herds of sheep and goats.Once we watched as one dog halt-ed traffic so that a second dogcould guide the herd across thehighway.

Upon tiring of looking at flow-ers and interesting rock formationswe watched for antelope, rabbitsand rock chucks. Occasionally wesaw elevation signs. They all said,"elevation 5,000 feet." We jokedabout that. Certainly we had man-aged to reach to higher elevationsconsidering the amount of climb-ing we did.

Attention to roads varied stateto state. We didn't need signs wel-coming us. We knew what statewe were in by the way we bumpedor rolled along. We were mosthappy to ride in Colorado. Utahwas pretty good. Roads on thereservation were a different matter.After an hour or so bumpitybumping along I composed a paro-dy to a famous epic poem:

"Puncture weed to the right ofme! Broken glass to the left. Witha great big rumble strip Right

down the middle."The desert is not flat. Hills var-

ied in steepness from "rollers" to"4 banana hills." We were warnedabout the second day, the worstday. It brought to mind PhilLiggett, Tour de France, fourthcategory rise. Then reality set in.If I could climb it, and I was, itwasn't so bad. As my brotherwould say, "That's what grannygears are for."

We enjoyed the side trips in avan that were sprinkled throughoutthe week. Tony, from New York,videoed everything. I overheardsomeone say, "He rides five hoursand takes 40 hours of video." Nothard to do. Goosenecks of the SanJuan, Hovenweep NationalMonument, Valley of theMysteries (part of the all dayMonument Valley tour) wereincluded in the tour package.

We enjoyed an entire day tourof Monument Valley. During thistour we ate hamburgers grilled ona wood fire and drank cowboycoffee. Yum! er, Yahoo! It was sogood! It's difficult to pick onehighlight from a day such as thiswhere we got to see reservationlife up-close. For Jan B., who haslong, long hair it had to be thevisit to a Hogan where an 82 yearold Navaho woman combed herhair into a traditional Navajo bun.

As the days went by the adven-ture continued. The roads, the sidetrips, the scenery, each other, allprovided plenty of fodder forevening campfires.

Campfires? In the desert? Yes.Firewood was just another basicamenity of this tour. And enoughheavy duty cookware and stovesto provide hearty, tasty mealsevery night. Both Grant and hiswife, Cyndi, are marvelous cooks.They prepared our meals during

On a steamy, cloudless day inSouthern California, DavidZabriskie grabbed the time trialwin at the Pool Gel USCFNational Road Championshipson June 17th. Idaho's KristinArmstrong finished fourth in thewomen's event.

The time trial took place inMoreno Valley, about an hourdrive from event headquarters inRedlands. The course was a 15-mile, out-and-back circuit with1177 feet of climbing per lap.The women did one lap, whilethe men tackled two.

Riders took off from MorenoBeach Drive, just off StateHighway 60. After a brief ascentout of the gate, the first 3kmwere mostly flat, before the

opening climb at the intersectionof Cottonwood Avenue andRedlands Boulevard. The sur-rounding landscape, typical ofthe Inland Empire, was barrenand brown with little shade toshield riders from temperaturesthat rose into the high 80s.

After another flat section,came the course's toughest test, apunchy ascent on the road thatborders the Lake Perris StateRecreation Area. The riders thenhit the turn around and had to doit all over again.

The men's TT was not anOlympic selection event, but itdid crown Zabriskie as the 2004national champion. It was histhird stars-and-stripes win, theother two coming in the juniorand U23 ranks.

"I knew I was one of thefavorites, but I was still pretty

nervous," said the 25-year-oldZabriskie, who's in his fourthyear with U.S. Postal-BerryFloor. "It's been a long timesince I've gotten lucky." Headded, "I came down a littleearly to adapt to the pollution.Hopefully some of this nicebrown air will get blown outbefore Saturday."

Indeed, during the last 13months Zabriskie has enduredtwo ugly crashes. First, a car hithim during a training ride inUtah in May of 2003, leavinghim with a broken leg and wrist.Then he went down in a bigpileup at the Redlands Classicthis past March and had to beairlifted off the course with asevere concussion and multiplelacerations.

"The hardest thing aboutcoming back was the mentalpart," Zabriskie conceded."Body parts heal but it can takethe mind awhile to overcomestuff like that."

Clearly Zabriskie was mental-ly - and physically - fit on thisday. He was the only rider to gounder 32 minutes at the halfwaymark of the 30-mile effort(31:18), and his winning mark of1:03:11 was 2:16 faster than

UTAH STATE ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP

Osguthorpe Takes Seventh in National'sSalt Lake City's John Osguthorpe (Ogden One) took seventh in the

PoolGel USCF Elite Men’s National Championships on June 16th inRedlands, CA. After a 7km neutral start loop, the field of 127 riders setout for 10 laps of a 15km loop that featured a 2km ascent to PanoramaPoint on each lap. The stretch of road that topped out with a 20% grade,along with several other short climbs throughout the loop quickly separat-ed the field as a break of five established itself early in the race. EvanElken, Osguthorpe, John Hunt, Chris Peck, and Steve Tilford distancedthemselves from the remainder of the field and eventually increased theiradvantage to over a minute. Behind, a chase group of Curt Davis, MichaelHutchinson and Chris Walker bridged up to the leaders with six lapsremaining. With an advantage of 1:30, the selective course continued totake its toll on the field as the main peloton splintered into several groupsand riders in the break began to fall off the pace. Walker eventually tookthe win while Osguthorpe rolled in several minutes later. Marc Yap(GlobalPhoneSales/Healthy Choice) finished 21st.
