I have been permanently appointed as the Principal of Oak Flats High School, commencing in Term 2 2018. I am sad to be leaving behind the wonderful staff, students and community of Nowra High School, but looking forward to becoming part of a new school community. We are now coming to the end of a very productive, eventful and celebratory year. Thank you parents and students for your contributions and support for Nowra High School. One student who has made an impression on the community, who is still to be named, reminds me that our students are caring, considering and responsible; we had this message sent to the school via our Facebook page recently: "Words cannot express just how thankful I am!! To the kid from Nowra High whoever you are, thank you so much for handing my wallet and bag into the police, the world needs more people like you The past two weeks have been a wonderful celebration of our student’s achievements: starting with our Sports Assembly, then MADD Week commenced on Sunday 3 December with an exceptional display of art works in the hall along with presentations of awards for creative and performing arts. On Wednesday 6 December our dancers dazzled us, on Friday 8 December the music showcase was a huge success and the grand finale of our drama students performing “Shuddersome Tales of Poe” on Saturday 9 December. Congratulations to all of the students involved, and my thanks to the many teachers who work so hard to support them. Congratulations go to a number of students this fortnight: Rhiannon Brown Yr11 – who has been selected to play for the U18s Illawarra Dragons tackle rep team. Students from Yr7-11 – who have earned 20 merits this term and were treated to principal’s morning tea in the library. Amber Healey and Kyle Holman of Year 12 who have had their HSC Body of Work selected for next years BOW WOW exhibition at the Shoalhaven Art Gallery. On a sadder note, Mr Lenard’s family were involved in a car accident in November with one of their baby twin boys Oliver suffering major trauma to his brain. Mr Erdel has created a gofundme page to raise much needed funds to help pay for the upcoming medical fees the Lenards will face. If you wish to donate, please go to: https://www.gofundme.com/oliver-and-the- lenards-help-fund The SRC are very busy organising some fun activities for the end of year; a bake sale, Christmas cards and candy cane sales, along with a mufti day on Tuesday 12 December. On Wednesday 13 December, there will be a student vs teacher dodgeball match to raise money for Mr Lenard. The cost is $2 entry on the day. Year 12 will receive their HSC results on Thursday 14 December. To mark this event, Mr Ryan will be hosting a breakfast BBQ for students at 8am in their old year 12 area. We look forward to seeing our year 12 students at school again. Our presentation evening is being held Tuesday 12 December at 7.30pm in the hall. Invitations have been sent home to students receiving awards. This is our way of formally celebrating and commending our hardest working students for the year. Looking toward 2018, we will be hosting the launch of our new school expectations. The launch is Friday 2 February from 7-9am. There will be BBQ breakfast, fun games and activities, including revealing our new mascot – NAZZA! ALL WELCOME! Thank you again to staff, students and families for a wonderful 2017 at Nowra High School. I wish you a safe and happy holiday break, and we look forward to seeing you all again in the new year. Students were lucky enough to experience ‘A Day at Sea’, when the RAN visited Nowra High. 5 PT and team building sessions, similar to those experienced in the ADF, were run throughout the day, with the philosophy of ‘Engage the brain before you engage the body’. Emphasis was placed on the importance of

team work, listening to instruction, and planning, to achieve optimum results. The recurring theme being ‘learning only happens when you participate!’ Many thanks to LS Jan Gilmour and PO Olivia Usbeck for running the sessions. The feedback from the students and staff has been extremely positive. We look forward to the RAN returning to the school again next year, to give more of our students the opportunity to experience ‘A Day at Sea!’
