3 Day Tree Anatomy WorkshopPresented by Mark Hartley – assisted by Adam Tom

Arboriculture Australia™ will once again run the 3 DAY SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP ON TREE ANATOMY. The workshop will commence on Friday 29 May continue on to Saturday 30 May and conclude on Sunday 31 May 2015. Many courses look at groups of trees or even individual trees usually from a distance. This workshop will help to show you the inner majesty, complexity and beauty of trees, from the inside. The workshop is based on the program used by Dr Alex Shigo, to educate and inspire many of our current leaders in arboriculture. Workshop includes Shigo DVD valued at more than $250.00.

Tree anatomy is about studying, and understanding, the various types of cells, and structures that make up trees. As we understand the different types of cells, and how they interact to form the various structures of a tree, we get a clearer understanding of how trees function. The instructor for the 3 day course will be Mark Hartley and assisted by Adam Tom. Both are highly experienced arboriculturalists with many years of experience in both consulting and practicing aspects of this industry. Both Mark and Adam have consulted across Australia and Internationally.

• develop a clearer insight into the differences between woody and absorbing roots and will start to gain an understanding of how this knowledge can be used diagnostically

• gain an understanding of the anisotropic nature of wood and how examining the structure of woody parts from the 3 different planes aids in the process of identification and diagnosis

• discover and identify many of the common cells found in the stem by preparing cross-sections and with the aid of pre-prepared slides and images

• obtain a much better understanding of how large woody monocots grow and will see how trees apply an identical process thousands and even millions of times, but on a much smaller scale, to apical meristems

• observe that the cambium, bark cambium and xylem usually start as strips and not rings

• observe at a cellular level, the differences between woody stems above ground and woody roots below ground

• develop a better understanding of how these differences between roots and stem allow optimum efficiency in the environment; and how we can take advantage of this knowledge in better caring for trees

• observe how vessels interact around the branch collar and will discover why good and bad pruning cuts result in different shaped responses; and why, in comparison to pruning cuts, stem injuries form very regular shaped wounds, and

• observe some of a tree’s structural responses to wounding and better understand how wounds occlude, and how wounds impact on the health and function of a tree. When you assess trees, and whether you diagnose tree problems, or evaluate the impact of development on trees, or prune trees; understanding their inner workings helps us, as arborists, to make better decisions.

Adam Tom – QLDWorkshop: Tree Anatomy Workshop – AssistantBiographyAdam Tom is a Brisbane based consulting arborist with more than 25 years of experience in the care

and culture of urban trees. Adam graduated from the University of New England in 1985 with a degree in plant sciences and a graduate diploma in horticulture. Post graduate study included research into the allelopathic effects of camphor laurel on native hardwood forests. The next 12 months working with the N.S.W Forestry Commission in Bathurst. During that year, he decided that a career in Pinus monocultures was more than a little monotonous and and so moved back home to the family farm until something more challenging came along.

In 1986 he accepted a position with an urban horticulture company in Brisbane providing amenity arboricultural, tree and palm transplant, tree farming and consulting services. Adam established ‘The Tree Doctor’ in 1992 and provides specialist contracting and consulting services on both a local and international basis. Adam was a founding committee member and is a Past President of both the ISA Australia Chapter (now AA) and the QAA. When not grafted to his desk or out spending time with a favourite veteran tree he can possibly be found back on the farm, fishing or out doing ‘fun stuff’ with the family.

ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) ProgramPresented by Mr Mark Dunteman – USA

*Course registration fee includes workshop, the Tree Risk Assessment manual and TRAQ workbook, along with morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea during the two-day training. Final day is a written examination. How to Register:Complete the attached registration payment form, attach a copy of your pre requisite qualification and ISA TRAQ Registration form and email directly to [email protected]. Participants will receive their course materials a minimum of two weeks prior to the start of the TRAQ event. The manual and workbook will be sent once you are registered and should be taken with you to the course. Participants are also encouraged to complete preliminary work in the workbook prior to arriving at the course.

ABOUT THE COURSEThe ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) program provides an opportunity for professionals in the arboriculture industry to expand their knowledge through education and training in the fundamentals of tree risk assessment. This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardised and systematic process for assessing tree risk. The results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity. The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Course is a two-day educational course followed by a 1/2 day assessment that includes both a written and field component. The course prepares the participant to take the TRAQ assessment to become ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. It is required that you attend the course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.

COURSE CONTENTTree Biology and Mechanics: Participants will learn how to assess wood structure, decay, and tree mechanics, and evaluate their impact on likelihood of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to identify and assess defects and conditions that may affect likelihood of failure.

Tree Inspection and Assessment: Participants will learn about types of targets, assess the likelihood of a tree or tree part impacting a target, and estimate the consequences of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to assess site factors that may influence likelihood of failure.

Data Analysis and Risk Categorization: After learning the tree and target factors that must be assessed, participants will combine likelihood of failure, likelihood of impact, and consequences of failure to derive a risk rating. This rating helps the assessor communicate tree risk to clients and risk managers, and allows comparison of risk levels between trees.

Risk Reporting: Participants will learn skills for clearly communicating tree risk to clients, both in written and verbal reports. Participants will also learn about the key components that should be included in a report after completing a tree risk assessment.

TREE RISK ASSESSMENT QUALIFICATION INFORMATIONThe Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is valid for five years from the date the TRAQ exam is passed. The qualification holder is required to retake the course and pass the exam every five years in order to maintain the qualification.
