From the Principal

Welcome everyone to Week 7.

Mathematics Enrichment: The Castle of Problems

Last week Stage 3 students assisted two children through a maze of

rooms in the Castle of Problems. They used problem solving

strategies, including drawing a diagram, to negotiate the maze. This

is part of the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians –

Enrichment Stage.

Every month, Mrs Elliott will work with a group of Stage 3 students to

enrich and extend our talented mathematicians. The group will

explore a range of challenging problems from all branches of

Mathematics, including patterns, divisibility, polyhedral and Euler’s

polyhedron formula.

The students solved the following problem, can you? Remember, a diagram

walked 15 m forward and each night 9 m backwards. The tortoise was

heading towards a waterhole 45 m away. How many days and nights will it

take to reach the waterhole?

Congratulations Philip Branwhite, Jane Christie, Jarret Johnston and Andrew Wilkinson, who successfully

answered the problem from last week.

Poetry in Action

Parents may have seen some photos over the weekend of

Poetry in Action’s visit to the Secondary School. Students

Many thanks to Mr Scott Mclean (father of Nicola, Yr 9, and Will, Yr 7) for his ongoing work with the team,

and to Mr Mclean and the National Australia Bank for the very generous donation of team shorts and

socks.

Thanks too to Mr Matt Roach, the team’s trainer on the day.

The NRL have promised a 5-week coaching clinic

soon, to develop the boys’ skills and take

advantage of their tremendous enthusiasm and

team-spirit.

Have a great week everyone.

Helping Elissa Make a Difference

On November 8-9, Elissa

Gillingham (Jagger 1C), Melissa

Montagliani (Isobella, 1C) and

Karelle Taylor (our Teacher

Librarian) will be participating in

a very special event called the

Weekend to End Women’s

Cancers, benefitting the Chris

O’Brien Lifehouse.

The ladies will walk

approximately 60 kilometres in two days with thousands of other women and men. The proceeds will

support breast and gynaecologic cancers research, treatment and services.

Elissa has committed to raising at least $2,000, but has set her personal goal at $5000.00 for her team. She

needs our help. Please use the link at the bottom of this notice to visit her site and make an online

donation. Please keep in mind how far Elissa and the ladies will be walking, and how hard they’ll be

training.

From Elissa: ‘I’m walking so far to do something bold about all women’s cancers. I hope that you’ll share

this incredible adventure with me - by supporting myself and the ladies’ fundraising efforts. Thank you in

advance for your time and generosity!

Click here to visit my personal page.’

From the School Counsellor

Our new school counsellor, Mrs Sally May has developed some information for parents and students about

the school counselling services at Orange Grammar. This information has been added to our school

website under 'Our School'. By visiting this link you can learn about the role of the school counsellor, the

referral and consent procedures, confidentiality information and more. Please visit our website and have a

look. Information specifically for students will be added to Intouch by the end of term.

Disabled Car Spaces

It has come to our attention that people are using the disabled car spaces when there are no car spaces

available in the Administration car park. Please do not use the disabled car spaces unless you have a

disabled parking permit. We have numerous families that need to use the disabled parking spaces. Please

park in the top car park and walk down to Administration using designated pathways.

Primary Homework Club

If you wish for your child to join please email me your child’s name. It begins straight after school and

finishes at 4pm.

Class Concerts

During the last week of term, all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 who learn an

instrument, dance, Speech and Drama or anything else that entertains, are invited to

perform for their class. These little concerts will be on either Monday or Tuesday of Week 8

and will be during class music time. Please bring any necessary equipment along for the

performance.

Please note that the class concerts are for students only, and all students, beginners or

advanced, are encouraged to perform.

2015 classes – Kindergarten to Year 12

Enrolment Interviews are almost complete for new students in Kindergarten through to Year 11 in 2015.

Every new enrolment, including siblings, is required to participate in an enrolment interview. If you wish for

your child to be considered in the 2015 cohort, and an interview has not yet been arranged, please

contact Carolyn urgently by either phoning the Administration office, or by email at

[email protected] . Interviews will conclude at the end of Term 2.

A Transition Morning Tea will be held on Thursday 19th June for new Transition students, commencing in

2015. If you are aware of any families who require a position in the 2015 Transition class, and have not yet

made formal application, please encourage them to submit an Application for Enrolment form to Ms Egan

to avoid missing out.

Chess News

We have commenced our School Championships with over 40 players registered. Everybody plays a

different opponent each Tuesday during the winter months and all will benefit. Some sparkling chess is

already being played and the standard will only get better!

We have entered four teams of four in the NSW Junior Chess League District Competition, to be held over

two days at Blayney next Monday 16th June and Millthorpe on Thursday 19th June. This is earlier than last

year, so the interschool competition will be finalised this term. Students will be informed this week if they

have been chosen to represent the school. Parents who can help transport our teams and provide

supervision on the day will be most appreciated. Please contact me at school if you can help.

In order to prepare our players for the competition, Mr Cummins is offering a free master class at School at

lunchtime this Thursday. All school representatives should attend. This class will include openings, mid game

strategies, checkmating and other sneaky tricks.

The Uniform Shop Dear Uniform Shop Customers,

We understand the financial pressures that many families face and as a result Alinta Apparel are constantly balancing our operating costs to achieve the highest quality of garments in line with the expectations our schools and their families have come to expect. We are continually looking at ways to operate and manufacture uniforms more efficiently without negatively impacting on the product, rights of our employees and personalised service and expectations of our schools and customers. Despite this, we are continually experiencing price adjustments from our manufacturers and unfortunately are unable to wear the full impact of this anymore. Please be aware that from 1

st August 2014, Uniforms will incur a price adjustment. We will be holding prices until this time so you

have the opportunity to make purchases at the current price. We thank you for understanding and hope you continue to enjoy your experience with Alinta Apparel. Warm regards Alinta Apparel Pty Ltd
