We were the fi rst and many other federations followed our example. Some were so impressed with the way we managed this important FIA-backed championship that they took our modus operandi as a guideline. The Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth is extremely successful, which means the work we are doing in collaboration with Luca De Donno’s WSK Promotion is successful. The Automobile Club D’Italia is proud that other F.4 championships, like the German one, have adopted the F.4 “package” we inaugurated last year: Tatuus single-seaters, Abarth engines, and Pirelli tires. The Italian F.4 Championship is a national program, but it has global ambitions, as this year’s entry list proves once again. The 2015 season is now ready to start, so I leave the fi eld to drivers and engines, eager to see a new class of international champions.

Siamo stati i primi, ed il nostro esempio è stato seguito da molti altri che, in alcuni casi, hanno talmente apprezzato il modo con cui abbiamo portato avanti questo importante campionato, voluto con forza dalla FIA, da seguire in toto quello che da noi era stato tracciato. Il successo dell’Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth, il successo del nostro lavoro e di quello della WSK Promotion di Luca De Donno, è stato straordinario e per noi dell’Automobile Club D’Italia vedere le monoposto Tatuus, motorizzate Abarth e gommate Pirelli, essere protagoniste anche in un campionato come quello tedesco, è fonte di estremo orgoglio.Un campionato nazionale, ma ad altissima vocazione internazionale che, anche quest’anno, ha raccolto un numero straordinario di adesioni da tutto il mondo. Ora, ad inizio stagione,lascio la parola ai motori e ai piloti, nella certezza che, anche quest’anno ad emergere saranno piloti che si metteranno in luce anche in campo internazionale.

Following a successful premiere edition, with a 22-driver line-up, top level competition, and spectacular racing at every round, the Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth is ready to kick off a new season on the Vallelunga International Circuit. The entry list is already bigger than last year’s and will continue to grow throughout the season; the prize purse is richer and now extends to the Women Trophy; participation is as international as it gets, with multiple continents and nationalities represented on track... the Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth just keeps getting better, fulfi lling its pledge to introduce young karters to formula driving, help them learn with the support of ACI-CSAI instructors, give them global visibility and turn them into tomorrow’s racing stars.

Dopo un anno d’esordio molto positivo, con 22 piloti partecipanti alla prima di Campionato, grandi competizioni e spettacolo, l’Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth riparte con il primo appuntamento uffi ciale sul Circuito Internazionale di Vallelunga. Cresce il numero di piloti partecipanti, e se ne aggiungeranno altri durante la stagione, si arricchisce il montepremi, si aggiunge il Women Trophy. Insomma il Campionato F.4 Italiano non si ferma, ma continua a migliorarsi, per una stagione 2015 che introduca nel modo migliore i giovani kartisti al mondo delle formule, li possa istruire grazie anche ai corsi federali CSAI, e contribuisca a far nascere i futuri campioni di domani. Tutto ciò, con un clima sempre più internazionali, grazie a team e piloti di diversi paesi e continenti, che rendono l’Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth una vetrina a livello globale.

The Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth was created precisely to introduce young karters to the world of single-seat cars. From car design (see the interview with Tatuus head Giancarlo De Bellis on pg.10-11) to race organization, the championship is designed to help young talents learn and grow.

L’Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth nasce in tutto e per tutto proprio per introdurre i giovani kartisti al mondo delle monoposto. Dal progetto stesso della vettura (vedi intervista a Giancarlo De Bellis a pag 10-11), a tutta l’organizzazione dei weekend di gara, ogni scelta è stata fatta per istruire e far crescere i giovani talenti.

The Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth collaborates with the ACI Sport Federal School, which is dedicated to young driver development. Federal School instructors hold a debriefi ng session before and after each feature race on schedule for every championship round (21 total) to teach drivers how to analyze race trends, data, and performance values.

Un’organizzazione totalmente dedicata al tutoraggio e alla crescita sportiva dei giovani piloti, questa è la scuola Federale ACI Sport, che prima e al termine di ognuna delle tre gare degli appuntamenti di Campionato, per un totale di 21 gare nel corso della stagione, effettua corsi e debriefi ng dedicati ai partecipanti.

INTERVIEWInterview with engineer Gianfranco De Bellis, co-chief of Tatuus, world leader in the design and production of race cars and home to the new single-seaters of the Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth.

Intervista con l’ingengnere Gianfranco De Bellis, uno dei dirigenti della Tatuus, leader nella progettazione e realizazzione di auto da corsa e casa delle nuove monoposto dell’Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth.

Under the expert guide of Gianfranco De Bellis and partner Artico Sardonà, for over 30 years, Tatuus has been a leader in the production of high-technology race vehicles - from design to research and development, all the way through to construction. With every product, the Tatuus engineering process starts with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a structural design system that allows to identify any chassis deformations and torsion. Another key element is CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), which simulates the way air fl ows impact against the surface of the car at racing speeds. In this phase of the process, Tatuss engineers work with a wind tunnel of their own creation (inaugurated in 2005). Once completed, the chassis is subject to a fi nal test at the “torsion ring”, which applies pure torque forces to measure the structure’s rigidity and stability.

Da oltre 30 anni, sotto la sapiente guida di Gianfranco De Bellis e il socio Artico Sardonà, Tatuus realizza veicoli da corsa di elevato contenuto tecnologico, dal design alla ricerca e sviluppo, fi no alla produzione. La progettazione di ogni vettura Tatuus parte dalla Finite Element Analysis (FEA), un sistema utilizzato nel design strutturale che permette di visualizzare deformazioni e torsioni del telaio. A ciò si aggiunge il CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), che permette di simulare l’andamento dei fl ussi d’aria intorno alla vettura. Very much so! The car has fully proven its reliability and instructive potential. In fact, other national federations have decided to adopt our chassis, pairing it with the Abarth anegine. People are getting to know the “F.4 product” across the world. We did a great job in Tatuus and Abarth, but the Italian Federation gets all the credit for having been the fi rst to launch a FIA-backed F.4 Championship.Si, molto! La vettura si è dimostrata affi dabile e formativa, tanto che altre Federazioni hanno deciso di utilizzare quest’anno il nostro telaio in abbinamento al motore Abarth. Adesso il prodotto “F.4”inizia a essere conosciuto in molte nazioni. Oltre al lavoro nostro e di Abarth, dobbiamo riconoscere alla Federazione Italiana il merito di essere stata la prima al mondo a organizzare un Campionato FIA F.4.

The new FIA regulations are very strict, considering the mandatory fi nal cost limits. Even so, we managed to create an excellent product, also thanks to the support of several Italian companies that are leaders in the industry. The greatest innovation of all is the new Magneti Marelli automatic shift system.Il nuovo regolamento FIA è molto esigente in rapporto al costo fi nale imposto. Grazie anche al supporto di aziende Italiane leader nel Motorsport siamo riusciti a realizzare un ottimo prodotto. Su tutti, voglio ricordare l’introduzione del nuovo cambio elettro-attuato di Magneti Marelli.

the F.4 car is powered by a Fiat Abarth 1.4 Turbo engine with 160 hp. why did you choose this combination?La F.4 monta un motore Fiat Abarth 1.4 Turbo da 160 cavalli. Un commento su questa combinazione?

We know Abarth engines very well, since we also have a dedicated Formula Abarth car. It is an extrenmely reliable engine and it is great to drive with, even if it is a turbo. In my opinion, it is the best F.4 engine on the market.Il motore Abarth lo conosciamo da alcuni anni avendo avuto la possibilità di utilizzarlo sulla precedente F.Abarth. E’ un propulsore molto affi dabile e, nonostante sia turbo, ha un’ottima guidabilità. Penso che ad oggi sia, nel complesso, il miglior motore F.4 prodotto.

56how are you planning to evolve the F.4 chassis? and do you think it needs improvement?Che tipo di evoluzioni pensate di fare sulla F.4 in futuro? ritiene che ci siano aspetti da migliorare?

According to FIA regulations, we cannot introduce any modifi cation for the fi rst 3 years. To answer your second question, when you launch a new product and get past the fi rst year of competitive racing, you’re bound to fi nd things worth improving... but this is normal, it’s part of the work we do.Il regolamento FIA prevede che per i primi 3 anni non si possano introdurre modifi che. Indubbiamente quando fi nisci un nuovo progetto, e dopo un primo anno di gare, individui aree e particolari migliorabili, è anche questo il bello del nostro lavoro...

how many different f.4 cars have you produced so far?Quante vetture F.4 avete realizzato ad oggi?

To date we have produced over 100 cars in less than 12 months for different F.4 championships around the world, thanks to the excellent feedback we got from teams.Ad oggi, sono state realizzate più di 100 vetture in meno di 12 mesi per diversi campionati nel mondo. The Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth was created to help young drivers take their fi rst steps from karting into the world of real formula racing. The Championship is reserved to athletes who are 15 to 18 years old, with no limitation in terms of nationality. The 2015 edition of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth runs over 7 rounds (all in Italy), each consisting of 2 qualifying sessions and 3 feature races. The fi rst and third race each last 28 minutes + 1 lap, while the middle race is 18 minutes + 1 lap long. The fi rst qualifying session defi nes the starting line-up for Race 1. The order of arrival in this race, in turn, determines the grid for Race 2, with the inversion of the top 10 drivers. The second qualifying session decides the start grid for Race 3. At each round, championship points will be assigned to the top 10 drivers of the “long” races (the fi rst and third) and the top 8 drivers of the “short” race (the second), according to the scale reported below. In addition, the overall best qualifi er gest an extra 5 points and the driver

of the best lap of each race gets an additional point. With a prize purse double that of last year and worth 100,000 euro, the 2015 Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth will award 50,000 in cash to the title winner and checks for 30 and 20 thousand euro to the second and third place fi nishers respectively. In addition, the top 2 drivers of Italian nationality will be offered a free ride at the ACI Sport Federal Supercourse. The other big news for the 2015 edition is the introduction of the Woman Trophy, to allow female drivers to compete simultaneously for Italian F.4 Championship glory and a dedicated all-girl title. And that’s not all. In an effort to make the F.4 a key stepping stone towards F.1 racing, top drivers will also earn points towards the FIA Formula 1 Superlicense: 10 points for the Champion, 7 points for the vice-champion, 5 for the third best, and 2 and 1 points respectively for the fourth and fi fth place fi nishers.

L’Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarthè un campionato per giovani piloti che, fi nital’esperienza nel karting, vogliono provare a cimentarsi in un contest di monoposto “vere”.Il campionato è riservato ai piloti nella fascia di età tra i 15 e i 18 anni, senza limitazione alcuna per quanto riguarda la nazionalità. L’edizione 2015 dell’Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth si articola su 7 round (tutti in Italia), ognuno caratterizzato da 2 sessioni di qualifi ca e 3 gare: la prima e la terza avranno la durata di 28’ + 1 giro, mentre la gara intermedia sarà di 18’ + 1 giro. Sarà il primo turno di prove uffi ciali ad esprimere la griglia di partenza di Gara 1. L’ordine di arrivo di questa, a sua volta, deciderà la griglia di Gara 2, con l’inversione dei primi 10 piloti. Il secondo turno di qualifi che detterà, invece, l’ordine di partenza di Gara 3. Ad ogni round, saranno i primi 10 piloti delle gare “lunghe” (la prima e terza) e i primi 8 piloti della gara “corta” (la seconda) a ricevere punti verso il campionato, secondo la scala riportata nella tabella

di seguito. Cinque punti saranno, inoltre, assegnati all’autore del miglior tempo assoluto delle prove uffi ciali e un punto andrà al pilota che fa registrare il giro veloce in ogni gara. Con un monte premi di 100.000 euro, raddoppiato rispetto al 2014, il campione dell’Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth riceverà un premio di 50.000 euro, il secondo di 30.000 euro e il terzo di 20.000 euro. I primi due piloti classifi cati di nazionalità italiana, inoltre, saranno ammessi a partecipare al Supercorso Federale ACI Sport. Ulteriore importante novità del 2015 è l’istituzione del Woman Trophy, dedicato ai pilota donna, le quali, oltre a partecipare come tutti i piloti al Campionato, saranno premiate nella classifi ca esclusiva del trofeo. Ma non fi nisce qui. Proprio nell’ottica di rendere la F.4 un ulteriore passo verso la F.1, la FIA, assegna punti importanti per la Superlicenza ai classifi cati del Campionato F.4. In particolare il primo classifi cato del campionato guadagnerà 10 punti, il secondo 7, il terzo 5, il quarto 2 e il quinto 1 punto.
