Cleft lip or cleft palate is a condition when the two sides of the lip, developing in an unborn baby, do not completely fuse together. It affects weight speech and chewing habit of a child and leads to ab- normal arrangement of teeth, poor jaw relations and facial aesthetic. Cleft lip and palate anomaly constitute nearly one-third of all congeni- tal malformations of the craniofacial region with an average world- wide incidence of 1 in 700. Its incidence in Asian population is re- ported to be around 1.7 per 1,000 live births or higher. In India, even though a national epidemiological data is not available, many studies from different parts of the country have repor ted a variation in the incidence of cleft anomaly. Based on rough estimates, it is suggested that approximately 35,000 new-born cleft patients are added every year to the Indian population. The study, initiated by Centre for Dental Education and Research (CDER) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences since 2010, was conducted in three phases: pre-pilot, pilot and multi-centric. Prominent voices among realtors and mor tgage brokers have joined with economists at some of the country's largest banks (i.e. mort- gage lenders) to call on Ottawa to revisit the mortgage stress test. The test, which essentially requires borrowers to qualify for a mort- gage at a rate that is two percentage points higher than the one they're being offered, is now obsolete, they say. It made sense a few years ago when interest rates were at historic lows, but it doesn't now that rates have risen. Mortgage Professionals Canada, a national industry association which represents some some 1,000 mortgage businesses and 11,000 indi- vidual mortgage brokers (the oversupply of mortgage brokers is an- other story), suggests the stress test should be set at 0.75 per cent above the offered rate. Given that the discount rate for a five-year fixed mortgage in Canada is around 3.7 per cent today, this means the industry version of the stress test would only ensure that borrowers can handle 4.45 per cent. As if a higher interest rate than that were impossible, and not worth testing for. Fun fact: The current going rate for a mortgage in the U.S. is 4.41 per cent. In the U.S., though, you get that rate for 30 years. Not so in Canada, where the typical mortgage term is five years, but the the typical amortization is 25 years. A Canadian mortgage is a gamble on where interest rates will be up to 25 years from now. Are we sure they won't rise above 4.45 per cent in that time? Some historical context: As recently as 20 years ago, the going dis- count rate on a five-year fixed Canadian mortgage was 8 per cent. It only dipped below 5 per cent when the Bank of Canada dropped its key lending rate during the Great Recession a decade ago. Is this the hottest skin care ingredient?

While there has been much debate about its medical uses, there isa steady increase in the use of Cannabis in beauty products acrossthe globe. Cannabidiols or CBD, which is a component derived fromCannabis (that won’t get you high), is becoming a popular choicefor skin care with promises of reducing fine lines, preventingpimples, and rescuing dry skin. Recently, Milk Make-up launched aCBD-infused mascara and brow tint, Malin + Goetz has a hand andbody wash with this compound, Origins offers a relaxing andhydrating face mask containing this oil, while Myaderm has used itin their blemish control product.Seed oil is beneficialGenerally known for all the wrong reasons, Cannabis is beingincreasingly used as a key ingredient in skin care products. CBD isused in cosmetics as this par t of cannabis is free of tetrahydrocan-nabinol (THC), which is considered hallucinogenic, explains DrBatul Patel, Medical Director and Dermatologist, The Bombay SkinClinic. “Cannabis seed oil is obtained by cold processing theseeds. This contains polyphenols and antioxidants, but is not a verystable oil. It needs to be mixed with other oils. It can be used withkiwi or rosehip oil to help balance sebum production and it can beadded with coconut oil for the hair,” she says.Could help with acne issuesCBD is preferred because of its many anti-inflammatory and pain

relieving proper ties. “This is said to be beneficial for people withacne, rosacea, eczema and for anti-ageing. I would advise the useof cannabis extract in skin care for those with breakouts and dryskin issues. But first, try a test patch on the face, below thejawline and wait for 48 hours so you know you are not allergic toany of the ingredients,” advises Dr Shuba Dharmana, Dermatolo-gist, Lejeune Medspa. While the feedback from users is good, shefeels there is no actual clinical evidence to say it is definitelybeneficial. “It is not harmful and laboratory studies have showngood results, but scientific evidence for its effects on people is notdocumented yet,” she adds.Relieves signs of itchingCannabinoids have promising antipruritic effects. Hence, it workswell in many dermatological conditions where itching is the mainsymptom. It also works on the erythema on skin so can be used ineczemas as well. Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, ConsultantDermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic & La Piel says these products suitIndian skin types. “They help regulate the life cycle of skin cells fora more radiant, youthful skin. CBD normalises oil production in dryskin patients and behaves as a highly effective sebostatic agent inacne and sebor rheic dermatitis. It should, however, be avoided inpatients with respiratory disorders and severe hear t conditions,”she adds.

Relationship virgins: a newreality for millennials?

American social psychologist and author, Bella DePaulo hasnoted that people, who make it to their 20s and beyond withoutever having a relationship are often stigmatised with a view thatthey are “less happy, less well-adjusted, and lonelier than adultsof the same age, who did have romantic relationship experi-ence.” While some would balk at the stereotype, the fact is thisbelief often dictates the way people interact with one another. While generations have been trying to break away from thesenotions for ages, millennials may just succeed where no one hasbefore. Here’s how.Throwing the rulebook out of the windowGen Z especially in the West are not conformists, making theirown dating/relationship rules rather than playing by the old ones. It’s this complete disregard for the old relationship rulebook thatgives millennials a chance to not only test the waters, but alsochannel the way it ebbs and flows to suit their idea of what arelationship should be. Parental and peer pressure, cruel datingtrends and the relentless pursuit of finding that ‘someone special’has further created an atmosphere where a number of millennialsare choosing to be relationship virgins. The single v/s in-a-relationship campThis decision to stay away from the complications of being at-tached brings other issues and stereotypes to the fore.Especially, the other ’s view that comes to the forefront. Couplesoften end up judging singles, bracketing them as a group of peoplewho are less happy and lonely. It’s clearly a stereotype, with nobasis in reality. Clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany breaksit down for you. She shares, “Singles in our country are notallowed or given space to think with a broader perspective. Whileit’s a pleasant feeling to date someone, it’s not a base measure ofpeople’s happiness. Many people who date, sometimes haveexaggerated notions of relationships. They look at singles withsympathy, not realising that most single people live life construc-tively and are happy and satisfied not obsessing over their rela-tionship status.” And while singles are aware of this other lens, through which they are observed and judged, many try not to letit affect them. However, that does not mean the pressures andexpectations do not get to them. How Gen Z in India is navigating relations?Psychiatrist Dr Hemant Mittal believes that given the relation-ship dynamics here, millennials in India have a different set ofproblems than their counterparts in the West. He says, “Indianmillennials are still under a lot of pressure to have an indepen-dent lifestyle, but at the same time the social system here, doesn’tgive them much scope to live life on their own terms. Long-termcommitted relationships have taken a backseat. And in five yearsthe effects will be seen mostly in urban areas. Collective com-munity oneness is still developing in India. The Indian youth isstill battling for their basics. So, while a section of them maybechoosing to be relationship virgins, others let society influencetheir choices when it comes to their relationship status.”

Teasing your par tner playfully leads to long lasting relationshipsAre you always in a mood to tease your better half? Then there isgood news. A new study suggests that couples who poke fun ateach other, indicating humour, are more likely to stay together. The study showed that inside jokes are par ticularly impor tant be-cause they affirm ones relationship through laughter, the DailyMail repor ted. However, couples who share mean-spirited jokeswith nasty jibes are unlikely to last, which indicates a problem inthe relationship.“Playfulness between romantic par tners is a crucial component inbonding and establishing relational security,” said Jeffrey Hall,Associate Professor from the University of Kansas in the US.“Par ticularly shared laughter is an impor tant indicator of romanticattraction between potential mates,” Hall added. The team examined more than 150,000 par ticipants to determine how impor tant humour is in a romantic relationship. The results, published in the journal Personal Relationships, suggest that couples who create humour together - including inside jokes - are morelikely to last. But, this does not mean that people who are funny or can make a joke out of anything would be more lucky in love.“If you share a sense of what’s funny, it affirms you and affirms your relationship through laughter,” Hall was quoted as saying by DailyMail. However, couples should not go too far, Hall warned. Impor tantly, having an aggressive sense of humour is a bad sign for therelationship in general, but it is worse if this style of humour is used in the relationship, the study noted.

Social media may be ruining your relationships, making you drained and distracted

Researchers found that even minor phone use during a meal with friends was enough to makethe diners feel distracted and reduced their enjoyment of the experience

With the advent of technology, ourdigital lives may be making usmore distracted, drained and dis-tracted. In a new experiment, re-searchers found that even minorphone use during a meal withfriends was enough to make thediners feel distracted and reducedtheir enjoyment of the experience.Lead author of the study RyanDwyer, said, “People who wereallowed to use their phones dur-ing dinner had more trouble stay-

ing present in the moment. Mod-ern technology may be wonder-ful, but it can easily sidetrack usand take away from the specialmoments we have with friendsand family in person.”Dwyer and his colleagues con-ducted two studies — a field ex-periment in a restaurant and asurvey. Par ticipants were eitherasked to keep their phones on thetable with the ringer or vibrationon or to put their phones on silent

and place them in a container onthe table during the meal. After eating, the par ticipants filledout a questionnaire detailing theirfeelings of social connectedness, enjoyment, distraction and bore-dom, as well as the amount ofphone use and what they did on theirphones during the meal. The research-ers found that people who had theirphones easily accessible during theexperiment not only used them morethan those with their phones put away,

but they also reported feeling more dis-tracted and enjoyed the experience less.Par ticipants were surveyed five timesa day for one week and were asked toreport on how they were feeling andwhat they had been doing in the 15 min-utes before completing the survey. Re-sults showed that people reported feel-ing more distracted during face-to-faceinteractions if they had used theirsmar tphone compared with face-to-face interactions where they hadnot used their smar tphone. The stu-dents also said they felt less en-joyment and interest in their inter-action if they had been on theirphone.Co-author of the study, ElizabethDunn said, “The survey findingswere especially notable becauseof the negative effects of phone useamong university students, whoare commonly known as digital na-tives. We assumed that this gen-eration would be more adept atmulti-tasking between using theirphones and interacting with others, but we found out even moderatelevels of phone use undermined thebenefits of engaging with others,”added Dunn.

CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTICLEUKEMIA PATIENTS ATHIGHER RISK OF MELANOMAPatients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) have a siz-able 600% higher risk of melanoma, the most dangerous form ofskin cancer, a Wilmot Cancer Institute scientific team found out.Although a higher risk of melanoma had been known, a full analysisof detection rates and treatments among CLL patients has neverbeen reported before, said Clive Zent, Managing Director, who ledthe Wilmot Cancer Institute scientific team.As a result of this new data, Zent, an international exper t in CLL,recommends that all clinical teams who care for CLL patients shouldactively monitor for melanoma as a par t of routine care. The goal isto catch the skin cancer early and manage it with the newest targetedtherapies.“We do not for sure know why CLL patients are more susceptible tomelanoma, but the most likely cause is a suppressed immune sys-tem,” said Zent, a professor of Hematology and Oncology and Medi-cine at the University of Rochester Medical Cancer and Wilmot.“Normally, in people with healthy immune systems, malignant skincells might be detected and destroyed before they become a prob-lem. But in CLL patients, failure of this control system increases therate at which cancer cells can grow into tumors, and also the likeli-hood that they will become invasive or spread to distant sites.”Study results showed that 22 melanomas were diagnosed among470 people in the cohor t, a rate that’s more than 600% higher thanwhat would be expected in a similar group of age- and gender-matchedpeople from the general population. Of the 22 diagnoses, 15 (or 68%)were detected through monitoring in the UR Medicine dermatologyclinic associated with Wilmot, and two cases (9%) were found byCLL specialists. 80% of the cases involved earlier-stage diseasewith a better prognosis, the study said. CLL is the most common typeof leukemia in the U.S., with about 140,000 people living with thedisease. Immune dysfunction is a major complication. The studyappears in the Leukemia Research journal.

FERTILITY PROBLEMS, UTERINEDEFECTS CAN AFFECTCHANCES OF PREGNANCYTurns out, uterine defects or the problems related to uterusaffects the chances of a woman to conceive or carry the fetusto term. Mullerian Anomalies referred to as the defects asso-ciated with abnormal development of the uterus or the fallo-pian tube accounts to infer tility in around 10% of the femaletrying to conceive.IVF exper t, Dr Arvind Vaid explained that uterine anomalies, acondition where the structure and contour of the uterus differfrom normal, is the main cause of infer tility. He said, “Studiesshow that one in every 20 women seeking IVF treatment to conceiveis affected by uterine anomalies. Though such uterine abnormalities arenot directly linked to infertility many a times the condition ismisunderstood until recur rent miscarriages occur.

PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM MENTAL HEALTHPROBLEMS TEND TO FOCUS ON NEGATIVES

A new study has revealed thatmany patients with neuropsychi-atric disorders focus on the pos-sible downside of a given situa-tion more than the potential ben-efit. Neuropsychiatric disorderssuch as anxiety or depression aretypically attributed to diseasesthat originate from the nervoussystem.Researchers at MassachusettsInstitute of Technology pinpointeda brain region that can generatethis type of pessimistic mood. In

tests in animals, they showed thatstimulating this region, known asthe caudate nucleus, inducedthem to make more negative de-cis ions. They gave far moreweight to the anticipated draw-back of a situation than its ben-efit, compared to when the regionwas not stimulated. This pessi-mistic decision-making couldcontinue through the day after theoriginal stimulation. These types of decisions, whichrequire weighing options with

both positive and negative ele-ments, tend to provoke a greatdeal of anxiety. The study alsoshowed that chronic stress dra-matically affects this kind of de-cision-making: More stress usu-ally leads to choosing high-risk,high-payoff options. In the new study, the researcherswanted to see if they could reproducean effect that is often seen in peoplewith depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. These patientstend to engage in ritualistic behaviours

designed to combat negative thoughtsand to place more weight on the poten-tial negative outcome of a given situa-tion. This kind of negative thinking, theresearchers suspected, could influenceapproach-avoidance decision-making.To test this hypothesis, the researchersstimulated the caudate nucleus, a brainregion linked to emotional decision-making, with a small electricalcurrent as animals were offereda reward (juice) paired with anunpleasant stimulus (a puff of airto the face).

WHAT ARE WHOLE GRAINS, REALLY?A grain is considered to be a whole grain as long as all three original par ts — the bran, germ, and endosperm — arestill present in the same proportions as when the grain was growing in the ?elds. Whole grains are grains that haven’thad their bran and germ removed. They are rich in nutrients, fiber, complex carbohydrates, magnesium, selenium andpotassium. Moreover, whole grains have some valuable antioxidants not found in fruits and vegetables, as well as Bvitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, iron and ber.In contrast to whole grains, refined grains are grains that have had removed both the bran and germ to give them afiner texture and longer shelf life. The refining process also removes many nutrients, including fiber. Refined grainsinclude white flour, white rice, white bread and cornflower. Most processed foods are made with refined grains. Theseprocessed foods will not keep your blood sugar levels steady, which is why you will be hungry again soon afterconsumption.BEST WHOLE GRAINS TO EATThese grains are worth keeping at the top of your shopping list: whole wheat, jowar, bajra, bulgur (cracked wheat),oatmeal, brown rice, buckwheat, whole-grain barley, corn, wild rice and quinoa (though quinoa is technically a seedand not a grain, it is packed with more protein than any other grain).

IDENTIFY WHOLE GRAIN PRODUCTSChoose foods that name one of thefollowing whole grain ingredients firston the label’s ingredient list: brownrice, buckwheat, bulgur, millet, oatmeal, quinoa, rolled oats, whole-grain barley, whole-grain corn. wholeoats, whole rye, whole wheat andwild rice.Foods labelled with the words —multi-grain, seven-grain, organic?our or enriched ?our are usually notwhole-grain products.Colour is not an indication of a wholegrain. For instance, a brown breadisn’t necessarily whole wheat — thecolour may come from addedcolouring. Read the ingredient list tosee if it is a whole grain.

adjusting for patient age, sexand cardiac risk factors, theteam found. While non-invasive cardiacstress testing is a cornerstonein the clinical management ofpatients with known or sus-pected coronary ar tery disease,CMR works as well or betterthan other exams at identifyinghear t wall motion, cell deathand the presence of low bloodflow, said the study.Fur thermore, the technologydoes not require any radiationexposure, which is essential innuclear stress tests.“With the findings from thisstudy suggesting that stressCMR is effective in predictingmor tality, we provide a strongbasis for a head-to-head studybetween stress CMR and othermodalities,” Judd noted.

However, tastes and styleshave also transitioned over the period. Millennials are experimentalnot only with their attire, but also with the colour palette. For people, who want to step out of the norm of wearing red on the day, they cantry different shades of red infused purples and violet. One could alsogo with orange, fuchsia pink, or living coral. That's why people, espe-cially the REALTOR® fraternity, call me "Market Disrupter" and "The

Deal Closer". I really love these two tags on my name because thesemake me feel proud on my contribution towards my profession, and I amconfident that my profession feels the same way about me.After realizing the biggest road block and challenge in the Real Estateindustry's flat model system where only 2 levels existed - the REAL-TOR® and the Brokerage, I star ted working on an altogether differentconcept based on Hierarchy Model and active mentor-ship. In a tradi-tional Brokerage, the success rate of REALTORS® has typically beenonly 10%, which is quite evident from TREB data. In 2018, More than 83%(43,218) REALTORS® completed 5 or less transactions, out of whichmore than 37% (20,000) completed none. Save Max has created such a

Hierarchy model and provided mentor-ship, where every single REAL-TORS® works in the field with a successful REALTORS® who acts astheir mentor. This revolutionary model has made more than 90% of SaveMax REALTORS® successful and has created a new dimension in theReal Estate Industry. This took a lot of time, brain storming, new formulasof income distribution, and much more. It continuously refined over timeand has proved to be such a big success that many others who have beenin the business for several decades are now attempting to follow thismodel. This new Hierarchy model has changed the thought process ofthe Real Estate industry.

Love, Vaastu and Romance:Here’s some advice for thoseborn in the month of February

This month is ruled by Saturn, which is infer tile and a coldplanet. Characteristically, it makes the native cynical, arrogant. Those who are calm and hardworking are careful. It also be-stows him/her with a logical and analytical bent of mind. It alsodenotes an exaggerated sense of independence, craftiness, shrewdness in small matters, much patience and persever-ance, often leading to a meagre result, especially in the initialperiod of life. Under the effect of Saturn, the native may have along life but marked with many litigation or severe diseases. They are advised patience, yoga and meditation.VAASTU’S COSMETIC GUIDEYou are not ter ribly interested in taking care of your face, andyou seem to be able to use the minimum amount of make-up formaximum results. Sometimes you have a parsimonious streakin you that makes you feel it’s a great extravagance to spendmoney on cosmetics. Since your hair is inclined to be lank, consult a hairdresser to style it. Your ruling planet, Saturn givesyou the “Saturnine expression” tending towards a serious look.Use smile as well as lotion in your beauty treatment.ROMANCEYou are by nature, inclined to want esteem and love of othersand are likely to give your affection where you feel you aregetting the most love. Obviously, this is a self-centered attitudeand one which you must question. A mate could become awareof all this and sudden resentment could end a relationship swif tly.Your romantic and sexual qualities are deep and vital to you.Marriage is a true need for your emotional welfare. You insistupon fine appearance of a loved one, will not tolerate less thanthe best you can find, and can be harsh with criticism evenwhen love is present. You are very ambitious, but emotionalneeds run almost neck to neck with high goals. Do not make themistake of being too demanding and domineering in love, forthat can turn of the beauty of love at its source in another.

HEALTH TRENDS FOR 2019SWAPNEEL HAZARE, FITNESS TRAINER AND OWNER OF SHIELD—HEART RATE-BASED TRAININGThis has been principally used by exper ts for quite some time and is likely to getpopular this year. We all speak of losing fat, gaining lean muscle mass and workingin the fat burning zone. But what exactly is a fat-burning zone and how do we findours? The principle is very simple: A human hear t beats at maximum rate of 220beats per minute. To find out your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR), minus your agefrom 220. To find out your Hear t Rate Reserve (HRR), minus your RestingHear t Rate (RHR) (60-70 beats per minute generally) from your MHR.Now, to burn the maximum amount of fat during your workout, your hear trate must be between 60-70 per cent HRR + RHR (60). Hence, during aworkout, you need to maintain your average heart rate between those figuresbeats per minute over a period of 20 to 30 minutes to be in your fat-burning zone and

to get maximum out of your workout routine.HIITContinuing the trend from last year, this year too, High Intensity Inter-val Training (HIIT) will be among the top favourites for training and toget maximum results. It’s very effective, time saving, can be donewith and without equipments, and can be customised individually. However, HIIT can be taxing on the body at times, depending uponfactors like the trainer who is conducting, intensity and frequency ofprogram, fitness levels of the trainee, and the rest and work ratioduring the workout. Also, how the rest days are planned. The wholeprogram is safe and effective only if it is properly periodised. It has tobe under the supervision of a cer tified trainer. Last but not the least,no program will be successful without a well-balanced diet.
