    INTRODUCTION

The potential of information technology (IT) can be usedbroadly under two heads

as a tool for direct contribution to agricultural productivity

as an indirect tool for empowering farmers to takeinformed and quality decisions which will have positiveimpact on the way agriculture and allied activities areconducted.

SOIL DEVELOPMENT Technology is dramatically increasing the

amount of land each farmer can workeffectively.

Using the GPS vocational device and

sensors in the field, farmers can harvest, along with their crops, detailed digitalmaps of their fields.

Precise application reduces waste andimproves yield

USE OF IT IN POST HARVESTTECHNOLOGY

Use of e-nose and colour sorter

The post harvest losses can be reduced by proper sorting

and grading of the food products

The value of product can be increased.

Proper sorting and grading reduces processing time andincreases efficiency of the machine

    E-NOSE

An e-nose is an instrument which comprises anarray of electronic chemical sensors with partialspecificity or broad band chemical selectivity's andan appropriate pattern recognition system capable

of recognizing simple of complex odours. Thisfeature is the key property on which e-noses foundtheir working principle. Their main application lies insorting food products on the basis of their odour.

    COLOURSORTER

It is used to separate on the basis of colours

Electronic colour sorter separates food products onthe basis of differences in colour. Each kernel isviewed and electronically compared with the pre-selected colour background and accepted orrejected. It can also separate mud balls and otherforeign materials whose colour does not match withthe pre- determined colour.

    IT FOR AGRICULTUREPRODUCTIONANDMARKETING

IT is playing an important and vital role in agricultural

production and marketing. In order to take the real status of

agricultural production and marketing, there is an urgent

need to develop the following items:

Farmers crop database should be managed. The database

includes the kinds of crops, the size of cultivated area, time of

    harvest and yield.

Crops information service should be created.

Production techniques and information inquiry system should be

    created.

images allows farmers totreat only affected areas of a

    field. Ranchers use remote sensing

to identify prime grazingareas, overgrazed areas orareas of weed infestations.

Landing institutions use datato evaluate the relative valuesof land by comparing archivedimages with those ofsurrounding fields.

Department of Agriculture & corporation (DAC) has

    formulated IT vision 2020.

    IT VISION 2020

Information relating toagriculture sectorwould be available tothe ultimate usersthefarmers - foroptimizing theirproductivity andincome

Extension and advisoryservices making use ofinformation technologywould be available tothe farmers on round theclock basis

The tools forinformationtechnology willprovide networkingof agriculturesector not only inthe country butalso globally

We believe that, particularly in the case of agriculture, there is a great potential to benefit from IT

the framework for an IT-based agricultural informationdissemination system is proposed. By exploitingprogress in IT

It can be rightly stated that though InformationTechnology in the agriculture is in growing stage in theIndian context

IT will be one of the most important areas in the nearfuture for agricultural development
