First major use of electrical circuit to process information!

• 1880 U.S census took 8 years to complete the population count. In 1890, Herman Hollerith, an employee of U.S. Census Bureau, automated population count. He devised punch cards with 12 rows and 24 columns that recorded the salient facts about each person. The cards were then slipped between a grid of mercury cups and a set of spring-loaded pins, which created an electric circuit wherever there was a hole. The machine could analyze not only the row total, but also the combination of traits like number of married males, foreign born people etc. It was the first major use of electrical circuit to process information.

• The company that Hollerith founded, after a series of mergers and acquisition, became what in 1924?

• The issues surrounding artificial intelligence, whether or not a computer is capable of thinking like a human, had a 200 year old reference in Discourse on the method, philosophical and autobiographical treatise published by René Descartes in 1637.

• Where he wrote “If there were machines that bore a resemblance to our bodies and imitated our action as closely as possible, we should still have two very certain means of recognizing that they were not real human. First, It is not conceivable that such a machine should produce arrangements of words so as to frame meaningful answers. Secondly, even though some machines might do some things as well as we do, they would inevitably fail in others.”

Connect and find XXX

Mark Zuckerberg’s FB post• The ancient Chinese game of XXX is

one of the last games where the best human players can still beat the best artificial intelligence players. Last year, the Facebook AI Research team started creating an AI that can learn to play XXX. Scientists have been trying to teach computers to win at XXX for 20 years. We're getting close, and in the past six months we've built an AI that can make moves in as fast as 0.1 seconds and still be as good as previous systems that took years to build.

Google Blog• The game of XXX originated in China

more than 2,500 years ago. Confucius wrote about the game, and it is considered one of the four essential arts required of any true Chinese scholar. Played by more than 40 million people worldwide, the rules of the game are simple: Players take turns to place black or white stones on a board, trying to capture the opponent's stones or surround empty space to make points of territory.
