"The Amcrican Association of Port Authoritics askcd the
Port of Houston Authority~ to apply for this special program due
to our leadership in environmental affairs, and Houston is the
only port EPA selected," explained H. Thomas Kornegay,
Executive Director of the Port of Houston Authority.
"It will be an interesting two-year process learning with and
from othcr organizations who share our
interest in protecting the environment while
providing public services. We plan to convey
all that we learn to our tenants, the city‘ and
county and other port authorities so that we
can all do a better job as stcwards of the
environment," emphasized Mr. Kornegay.
The Port of Houston Authority will
tbcus the application of the EMSs on the
central maintenance facility where every
manner of Port Authority‘ vehicle and piece of
equipment is serviced, painted, and repaired.
The effort will also include the portion of the Barbours Cut
Container Terminal that is undcr Port Authority’s control as
opposed to Maersk Sealand, which is the lead tenant of the facility‘.
The 13 other local governmental entities chosen for this
EPA program are: City of Berkley, CA; City of San Diego, CA;
Little Valley Sewer District ofIndcpendence, MO; Louisville and
Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District
in Louisville, KY; Wisconsin Department of
Natural Resources; Tri-County Metropolitan
Transportation District in Portland, OR; City
of Detroit, MI; Florida Gulf Coast University
in Ft. Myers, FL; Jefferson County, AL; King
County Solid Waste District of Seattle, WA;
Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection - Wall Street Experiment Station;
University of Massachusetts in Lowell, MA;
and the New Hampshire Department of
Transportation.

employing four multi-purpose vessels each with
a 930 TEU capacity. The port rotation is
Houston, New Orleans, Mobile, Savannah,
Baltimore, Abidjan, Cape Town and Durbin,
plus Salvador, Brazil and Veracruz, Mexico. The
stevedore for the service is SSA and the vessel
agent is Strachan.
The service was created afccr a split with
Safgank Line in their joint venture to South
Africa. SafBank Line is retaining the original
service to South At?ica and replacing the Lykes
vessels with two of their own. This will result in
an increased capacity to South Africa from the
Turning Basin by approximately 17 vessel calls
each year.
APL and Crowley have enhanced their
service from Houston to Mexico, Central and
South America with the addition of a third
vessel, the Americana. The service calls on
Houston weekly and serves: Mtamira and
Veracruz, Mexico; Pucrto Limon, Costa Rica;
Manzanillo, Panama; Cartagena and
Barranquilla, Columbia; and Puerto Cabcllo and
La Guaira, Venezuela. The volumc is anticipated
to increase by 6,000 TEUs annually.

PO Ports announced that it has acquired 100 pcrcent of Fairway Terminal Corporation. Fairway, which is based in Houston,
provides stevedoring and terminal services throughout Texas and was previously jointly owned by P&O Ports, Cavalair Corp.
(Biehl & Co.) and Stevens Shipping and Terminal Corporation.
The Port of Houston Authority Commissioners have approved the transfer of thc lease at lacintoport CargoTerminal from
Terminal Venture to Seaboard Corp. of Shawnee Mission, Kansas. The facility includes 1,838 feet of" berth, a refrigerated
warehouse, a bagged cargo handling system, and a bagging warehouse.

Te Anchor Handling Tug construction vessel Ca] Dive Aker
Dove was recently delivered by Aker Marine Contractors and
christened in the Houston Ship Channel on March 10. The
16,000 hp, 180-ton bollard pull vessel headed out to tow the
MODU Homer Ferrington, on contract to Mariner Energy, from
Sabine to an offshore location on Garden Banks Block 73. The
Ca] Dive Aker Dove introduces a new class of service vessel capable
of performing a range of construction activities in deep water. The
285-foot long, Jones Act qualified vessel is equipped with a 330-
ton, rotating A frame gantry, 150 hp 10,000-foot depth rated
ROV, and accommodations for up to 32 offshore workers.
T he Houston Pilots honored Captain Giuseppe Camporeale who safely completed 220 round trips of the Houston Ship
Channel with each trip equating to about 500,000 barrels of oil. His career was incident-free.
Alliance International Forwarders handled a unique project cargo shipment on
the vessel Ibn Bassam at Care Terminal recently. About 3,500 tons of fabricated
parts of a cement plant arrived from Port Kelang, Malaysia destined for Holnam
Cement in Florence, Colorado. The overall project is 30,000 tons including heavy
machinery for the cement plant coming through Houston from Europe.
