Canterbury Christ Church University has hosted hundreds of study abroad and exchange students from the US and Canada for over 20 years.

Our North American programme is run by our History and American Studies Department, within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The programme is well respected for its academic rigour.

Why Canterbury?

What are my options?

American and Canadian students can study in Canterbury for a semester as a study abroad student or for a year, usually as an exchange student.

You can elect to study in: • the fall semester (September to December), • the spring semester (January to April) or • the whole academic year (September to June).

Canterbury is located in the south east of England. The attractions of the country’s capital city, London, are within easy travelling distance, and access to international airports, ferry terminals and cross-channel services makes Canterbury an ideal base from which to explore the rest of the UK and Europe. Canterbury

is one of the most significant historical and cultural centres in Britain. The main campus is situated in a World Heritage site stretching from the Cathedral to the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey. Canterbury is the safest University City in England* and is characterised by a friendly and vibrant atmosphere and a strong community spirit.

What’s the academic programme like at Christ Church?

Students typically choose four or five courses (equivalent to 12 or 15 credit hours). There are three courses specifically designed for North American students:

• Modern Britain (Comparison course between the United States and Great Britain, which covers contemporary topics such as politics, society, culture, health care, media)

• British History Survey (Romans to Civil War)

• British Literature Survey (Chaucer to Dickens)

Other courses are selected from a broad range of options including Business, American Studies, History, Politics, Archaeology, English, Film and Media, Religious Studies and Social Science.

There are several organised trips as part of the academic programme on offer. These would typically include the Tower of London, The Globe Theatre, Dover Castle and Windsor Castle.
