ISSX President’s Message

As a Society, ISSX is dependent on the commitment and goodwill of its members for its activities, including the organization of scientific meetings and the functioning of Council and committees. Several members of ISSX completed their terms on Council or ISSX committees at the end of 2013. In the last Newsletter, I acknowledged the contribution of retiring officers and councillors. I would also like to thank members who have completed their terms on various committees: Awards Committee - Chantal Guillemette and Paul Hollenberg; Finance Committee - Eric Johnson (chair) and Teruko Imai; Membership Affairs Committee - Hugues Dolgos (chair); Scientific Affairs Committee - Aleksandra Galetin, Heyo Kroemer, Zhouhan Hu, and Mikihisa Takano.

Scientific reach, the hosting of high quality meetings, and international–ization are core to the mission of ISSX. I am pleased to announce that ISSX Council has approved a collaboration with the International Transporter Consortium (ITC). The ITC is an alliance of academic, industry, and regulatory scientists with a

common interest in developing the science of drug transporters. As an expert group, the ITC will contribute to the planning and delivery of transporter sessions at ISSX meetings. The ITC-ISSX collaboration has many potential benefits given the importance of transporters in drug disposition and the interest of many ISSX members in transporter science.

As I indicated in the last newsletter, the two ISSX scientific meetings scheduled for 2014 will increase the international scope of the Society. The 5th Asia Pacific ISSX Meeting, which was held in Tianjin, China from May 9-12, was hosted by the Chinese Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (CSSX), our affiliate and partner in China. The meeting was a great success. There were 552 registrants representing seventeen different countries and approximately 300 poster abstracts. Congratulations go to Professor Yasushi Yamazoe and Dr. Kazuya Maeda, the respective recipients of the Asia Pacific Scientific Achievement Award and the New Investigator Award, who both gave presentations at the meeting. On behalf of ISSX, I wish to thank the

meeting co-chairs, Professor Changxiao Liu and Dr. Zhuohan Hu, and their colleagues in CSSX for hosting a scientifically rewarding and socially enjoyable meeting.

Registration is now open for our second meeting in 2014, the joint 19th North American ISSX / 29th JSSX Meeting which will be held in San Francisco October 19-23. The meeting co-chairs Drs. Eric Johnson and Tetsuya Terasaki and their colleagues on the Meeting Organizing Committee have developed an outstanding scientific program that can be accessed on the ISSX website. Please support this meeting by your attendance and don’t forget to renew your membership, which provides the added benefit of discounted meeting registration.

The advent of synthesis, perhaps a couple of centuries ago, has enabled man to alter biologically-produced molecules, increase the availability of what otherwise may have been scarce materials, and generate molecular species that have not previously existed in the natural world. Whilst ingenious and laudable without doubt, these successes do sometimes overshadow the importance of the natural realm. As stated in the volume’s descriptive material, “compounds isolated from nature have long been known to possess biological profiles and pharmaceutical potential far greater than anything made by man.” In our present day repertoire of drugs, many can trace their ancestry back to compounds obtained from the biochemistry of the natural world.

This current book, “presents a practical guide to gathering, isolating, and discovering new pharmaceuticals from nature.” It is divided into ten chapters, with a few being sub-divided into sections. Some sections, such as that addressing the exploitative practice of “biopiracy,” were a welcome enlightenment to my naïve appreciation of mankind. To give an insight as to the coverage of this book, the chapter headings are listed as follows: History of natural products (terrestrial, marine, bioprospecting), Biological and pharmacological aspects, Fractionation and isolation, Structure elucidation (X-ray crystallography, NMR, mass spectrometry), Biosynthesis, Chemical synthesis (optimization for mass production and manufacturing), Medicinal applications, Integrating with systems biology (computational chemistry), Sustainability (biopiracy, environmental protection, international treaties), and Translation (curation and digitization, intellectual property, licensing and strategy).

The authors have produced an interesting work, with an easy-to-read layout and many black and white illustrations (and a good cover) to enhance the volume. With the increasing importance of natural products as potential lead candidates in the (nearing frantic) search for new medicinal agents, the book is recommended for those who are involved in this arena, and that probably relates to most of us.

5th Asia Pacific ISSX Meeting Report

The 5th Asia Pacific ISSX Meeting held May 9-12, 2014 in Tianjin, China attracted 552 attendees and was convened in a very pleasant and educationally conducive setting.

Meeting Organizing Committee Chairs Professors Changxiao Liu, Zhuohan Hu, and John Miners welcomed the attendees at the opening session in the modern auditorium of the Binhai One Hot Springs Hotel.

Attendees from nations including Australia, China, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Libya, Macau, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States enjoyed 12 symposia sessions, two keynote addresses, three workshop sessions, and nearly 300 scientific posters during the four day meeting.

ISSX gratefully acknowledges the contributions of the Meeting Organizing Committee, session chairs, speakers, poster presenters, exhibitors, and meeting attendees. It was an excellent meeting in all regards.

19th North American ISSX / 29th JSSX MeetingPlanning and organizing for the 19th North American ISSX and 29th JSSX Meeting to convene October 19-23, 2014 in San Francisco is progressing exceptionally well. The scientific program offers interesting subject matter for everyone. Additionally, this meeting features more than 550 poster abstracts, an exhibition hall with more than 50 companies presenting their latest products and services, industry-sponsored symposia sessions, award lectures, and much more.

ISSX is extremely pleased to co-organize a scientific meeting with the Japanese Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (JSSX). In 2005, ISSX partnered with JSSX to organize a highly regarded meeting in Maui, Hawaii. Another joint meeting between our societies offers a wonderful opportunity to provide researchers both fundamental new findings and cutting-edge information related to xenobiotic metabolism and disposition and demonstrates our continued mutual support.

The meeting will begin on Sunday, October 19 with short courses on DDI prediction, metabolite biosynthesis and structure determination, Non-CYP metabolism, and a tutorial on using database mining to maximize the use of DMPK and DDI data during clinical development of new chemical entities. The short courses will be followed by a welcome reception for all attendees and registered guests.

The Hilton San Francisco Union Square Hotel is the home of the 19th North American ISSX/29th JSSX Meeting. We have reserved a block of hotel rooms for attendees of this meeting but you must act fast! IN MEMORIAMGarold Steven Yost (1948–2014)Past ISSX Council Member and longtime ISSX member Dr. Garold (Gary) Steven Yost passed away on June 23, 2014.

Gary graduated from Hesston Junior College with an Associate Degree in 1969. He earned his BS from Bethel College in 1971, MS Organic Chemistry from University of Hawaii in 1974, and his PHD in Organic Chemistry from Colorado State University in 1977. He did a Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California San Francisco, had tenure track positions at Towson State University and Washington State University before becoming a tenured Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and an Adjunct Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at University of Utah in 1992.

Gary belonged to numerous scientific, professional, and scholarly societies including the American Chemical Society, International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics, Society of Toxicology, and the Mountain West Society of Toxicology.

Gary was the recipient of many awards and recognitions including the Zeneca Traveling Lectureship Award, the Colgate-Palmolive Traveling Lectureship from the Society of Toxicology, and was elected Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences in 2000 and elected to the Board of Directors from 2004-2007. He served on many national and international committees including the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council Committee on Toxicology (Guidelines for developing spacecraft contaminants, U.S. Naval Medical Research Toxicology Program, Subcommittee on Rocket-Emission Toxicants). He also served on numerous editorial boards.

Gary loved his profession. He was an outstanding scientist with an international reputation for excellence. He was an excellent mentor and lecturer for many doctoral candidates, pharmacy and medical students. His influence will continue to be a force in his scientific field and from his association with his students and family.

Make Plans to Attend the 13th European ISSX Meeting

June 22-25, 2015 The University of Strathclyde • Glasgow, Scotland

Features of this MeetingThe meeting will include short courses, keynote lectures delivered by leading researchers, parallel sessions on a wide range of topics, poster sessions, awards presentations, and a trade exhibition. There will be multiple opportunities for attendees to enjoy scientific and social interaction with friends and colleagues in a purpose-built conference facility in the centre of Glasgow.

Meeting VenueThe 13th European ISSX Meeting will convene in a new state-of-the-art facility on the campus of the University of Strathclyde which is located in centre city Glasgow. Both university housing and business hotels will be available for attendees.

Glasgow is easily accessed from two main airports close to the city: Glasgow International Airport and Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. Edinburgh Airport is only 40 miles away.

There is much to see in and around Glasgow. Stately homes and museums like the Burrell Collection and Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum should not be missed. And with Loch Lomond just half an hour away, there is plenty of breathtaking scenery to enjoy too. Glasgow also has great shopping and inspiring architecture and

is a wonderful city to visit. It provides an excellent launching point for exploring the other many sights to see in Scotland.
