Example of philanthropy:

1>  The Medicis, a powerful banking family of renaissance Italy, supported artists Michelangelo

and Raphael.

2>  During the 20th

century, the primary source of cultural support was private foundations

established by industrial magnates Carnegie, Mellon, Rockefeller and Getty.3>  Media moguls: Ted turner and Bill Gates.

Examples of people having different personal interest and thinking:

1>  The Controversial issue of abortion. Individuals with particular religious belief tend to

view laws allowing mothers an abortion as unjust, while individuals with other value

system may view it as just.

How technology is a boon:

1>  Enhanced our efficiency as we go about our everyday lives

2>  Productivity software help us plan and coordinate projects; intranets, internet, and satellite

tech makes us more efficient messengers, and helps us prepare our food and access

entertainment more efficiently.

3>  Advancements in bio tech , medical tech, info tech, communication tech (for global

participation), engineering and chemistry to improve the structural integrity of buildings,

roads, dams, bridges and vehicles

4>  Health, safety, education, and freedom and leisure time..

How technology is a bane:

1>  In 1960, the average US family included only one breadwinner who worked for just 40 hrs

per week. Since then the average workweek has increased steadily to 60 hrs today and in most

families now. There are now 2 breadwinners.

2>  As comp tech raises efficiency and productivity, it also raises em ployer’s expectation and

demands for productions.

3>  It requires a lot of time and work to keep pace with the new tech.

4>  Where we feel that physics, which has harnessed the energy of an ATOM, an alternate source

of energy and invaluable “peace makers”, this argument flies in the face of hundreds of

thousands of innocent people murdered and maimed by atomic blasts and by nuclear

meltdowns.

5>  We have now Chemical weapons for human slaughter.

In short, the so-called “advances” that scientific research has bought about often amount to net losses

for humanity.

Situation where large sum of money was invested for a good purpose but opposite happened

due to wrong initiation:

“Star wars” defence initiative, championed by the Reagan administration during 1980’s.

Purpose: To press social problems of the day by establishing after school programs for latchkey kids

by enhancing AIDS awareness and education.Outcome: at the end of Star wars debacle (A disastrous or embarrassing failure), we were left with

rampant gang violence, an AIDS epidemic, and a large waste of taxpayer dollars and budget deficit.

Reason: initiative was ill conceived.

Problems faced by world today:

The enduring problems of war, poverty and violence stem from certain aspects of human nature like

aggression and greed.

Even if we engineer way these undesirable aspects of our nature, it is up to our economists, diplomats,

social reformers and jurists to mitigate these problems, who, most of the times, squander (Spend

thoughtlessly; throw away) the resources which could have been applied to relieve the immediatesuffering of our dispirited, disadvantaged, and disenfranchised members of the society.

People who treated their obstacles as personal challenge and sat inspirational examples:

1>  Lance Armstrong, a Tour de France cycling champion, became a national hero not merely

because he won the Race but because he overcame his life threatening illness, against all

odds.

2>  The blind law student who inspired others to overcome the same challenge.

3>  The amputee (a condition of disability resulting from the loss of one or more limbs) distance

runner who serves as a role model for other physically challenged in her community.

People who used their powers for bad reasons. But ultimately led to their downfall:

1>  The leaders: Stalin and Hitler were the egregious (Conspicuously and outrageously bad or

reprehensible) violators of public morality. Ultimately, such leaders forfeit ((Lose

(something) or lose the right to (something) by some error, offence, or crime)) their

leadership because of the immoral means by which they obtained or wielded their powers.

2>  President Nixon, whose contempt for the very legal system that afforded him his leadership

led to his forfeiture of it.

Famous people

1>  Mahatma Gandhi

2>  Martin Luther king

These two were notably successful in leading others to practise high ethical and moral

standards, which they advocated.

3>  In the middle ages, during the Roman Empire, there was a great artist “Fra Angelico”, a

Benedictine monk of that period. During the decline of Roman empire, many women fled to

join Benedictine monasteries, bringing with them substantial dowries which they used to

acquire artefacts, art works and manuscripts. Thus, these monasteries became centres for the

preservation of western culture and knowledge.

4>  Copernicus

5>  Newton

7>  Einstein

8>  Curie

9>  Gutenberg (invention of the printing press)

A famous advertisement in U.S:

Budweiser commercial featuring talking frogs.

Purpose: To call attention to itself.
