Wallingford Neighbourhood Plan

Five Working Groups have now been established; Economy and Employment; Leisure, Town Centre and Amenities; Transport and Movement; Housing

and Development; Local Environment, and Health & Education and over the course of the next three months will be meeting regularly to set clear visions, achievable objectives and policies to be considered for inclusion in the Neighbourhood Plan.

All policies must be justified and supported by research and evidence. The Working Groups will be responsible for gathering this through analysis, field studies and community consultations. Sources may also include information already held by the South

Editorial

It has been an interesting few months recently, with huge changes taking place, reasons to be sad (all you England supporters) and reasons to rejoice (those of us born in Wales, and anyone who watched the Wimbledon Men’s Singles final) but one thing just about everyone seems to agree is that Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday is

a truly excellent reason for a party.

There was a huge national celebration in June but here in Wallingford some of us think that celebration is all the better for a bit of waiting, and that the weather is sometimes better in August than two months earlier. Our party to celebrate The Queen’s birthday will be held on 14th August in our wonderful Castle Gardens, where everyone can have an excellent time without having to dip into their pockets – bring a picnic and it will all be free.

Please do come along and join us for what Wallingford does best: coming together as a community and celebrating what truly makes us special.

Any policies developed by the Working Groups will be submitted for public consultation and, subject to feedback, will be fed into a first draft of the Wallingford Neighbourhood Plan in December 2016.

can have two birthdays, why not 3 weekends of celebration? The party will be held fro 1 to 5pm on Sunday 14th August. There will be live music by The Goring and Streatley band, and we hope some surprise guest entertainers too. Food will be on sale with a barbecu from Wallingford Butchers, tea and cake from Wallingford Hospital League of Friends. There will be giant games, activities and entertainment for the children and a chance to find out about local clubs and organisations. We will also be planting a tree to commemorate The Queen’s birthday with a lasting contribution to the Castle Gardens that our town can enjoy for many years to come. We want to celebrate with any resident who themselves will be 90 during this current year - please let the Town Council office know if you or a friend fits into this age group, we would love to invite them to a special afternoon of celebrations. Telephone 835373. Families are invited to come along with their picnics and blankets (for sitting on, not for keeping warm!) to enjoy the entertainment and soak up the party atmosphere. Reasons to be Proud of Wallingford

We celebrated another Carnival over with no incidents, and all who participated entered with the right spirit and thoroughly enjoyed

their time. Well done to everyone who helped in so many ways to keep Wallingford’s longest running traditional event successful. Even the rain held out for us this year!

The collection along the route plus the stall for Wallingford Young People for Kenya amounted to about £1000 so well done.

Huge thanks to all the many people who helped to make it all happen (too many to fit in the space the Editor can allow) and congratulations to all the winners.

Wallingford Celebrates HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday

On the principle that you can’t have too much of a good thing, Wallingford Town Council has arranged an afternoon of

fun and entertainment in the beautiful Castle Gardens To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday. We are hoping that holding our party in August might just mean that we have better weather than the more conventional events did in April and June. And if Her Majesty

There will be a Norman knight there all day, showing weapons and armour and talking about the things he displays and letting people try holding the items.

For children there will be a competition for the best dressed Saxon Warrior or Lady / Norman Knight or Lady (you can choose which side you wish to be!). Have a go at drawing and cutting out figures for our own version of the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings.

There are two new special exhibitions at the Museum this year ........ ‘1066: William Comes to Wallingford’ describing that William the Conqueror came to Wallingford after the Battle of Hastings to cross the River Thames with his army! But why did he choose Wallingford? ...... and ‘300 Years of Cartoons!’ a spectacular private collection , featuring about a hundred cartoons of all kinds.

Of course, our ever popular archaeology sandpits and ‘smelly/feely’ drawers will be in the museum as usual, to enable children to sample the fun of discovering things from the past! As this is a very special year in commemorating Wallingford’s historic role, entrance to the Museum will be free to adults as well as children, for this day only. However, donations are never refused! For full details, see website www.wallingfordmuseum.org.uk

News from our MP

This last month has seen the UK make one of its biggest decisions for a generation. I campaigned for remain, and my constituency voted for it.

While I appreciate the strength of feeling from many of my constituents, and the outcome may not be what we wanted, the decision has been made. We put this decision to the British people, and had the outcome been 52% remain and 48% leave, we would have expected the decision to be respected.

Therefore I cannot support a second referendum because we disagree with the outcome. Nor can I promise to vote against Brexit in Parliament as I cannot know what the Bill before us would contain. However, those who have emailed or contacted me following this momentous decision have not wasted their time, as it gives me the support I need to press for the best deal possible in our future negotiations with the EU.

My first priority is to protect the jobs and economy in my constituency, many of which depend so heavily on the EU. Our relationship with the EU is currently unchanged, and will remain so until an agreement over Article 50 is reached and put into effect. There will be no immediate change to European citizens currently living in the UK, nor for British citizens living in the EU. All applicable EU rules and funds in the research, innovation, and education fields remain in place.

While the fallout from the EU referendum dominates the headlines, the life of an MP continues. I recently met with representatives from East Challow, Cholsey & Watchfield Parish Councils at the Scottish and Southern Electric Parliamentary Reception for the Launch of their Resilient Communities Fund. These three Parish Councils received funding for a variety of projects from the fund, such as public defibrillator, portable generators and pumps for emergencies, and equipment to combat flooding. The next round of funding from this scheme is now open for applications, and more information can be foundhttp://bit.ly/29GAON4.

The Big Lottery Fund is also calling on local groups to apply for funding to hold events or activities that will bring people together and celebrate what makes their local community special. This funding could be used to celebrate something in the community’s local history,

www.wallingford.co.uk

a local hero, to mark something of national importance such as Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday, or just to get to know their neighbours better. Applications can be found athttp://bit.ly/29ujude.

As the Minister responsible for digital infrastructure, I am always looking for schemes that can help rural communities such as ours eliminate their not-spots. Vodafone have unveiled a program to give indoor mobile coverage to 100 rural community hubs, from pubs to village halls and community run shops. Further information can be found here: http://bit.ly/29A741w.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any pressing issues that you would like help with. Either myself or one of my team will get back to you as soon as possible and do what we can to assist. You can contact me on any matter at the House of Commons, SW1A 0AA, 020 7219 6350 or [email protected]. Email is the quickest and most reliable way to get in touch, as I keep a very close eye on my emails and can reply very quickly. Wallingford Town Council Update

In June and early July the Town Council had several meetings, and two particularly important issues were discussed. The first is the new Local Plan, on which

SODC will be consulting all of us until 19th August. You can learn more about the plans – which include a proposal to site a further 400+ homes in Wallingford – at the SODC website. Please do let SODC know what you think about this and the rest of the plans they are putting forward.

On a much less contentious note, the Council has also been finalising plans for our Garden Party to mark HM The Queen’s 90th birthday. There’s a separate article about that in the Window for Wallingford this month, so you can see what will be happening. We hope to see lots of local residents there.

Wallingford Army Cadet Force

The Last few months have been a very busy period for Wallingford Detachment. On the 2nd June

four Cadets had the opportunity to shoot the number 8 Rifle to complete any training that was needed, the Cadets enjoyed it and managed to pass their .22 shooting Badges.

Wallingford Detachment also took part in the Company Training Exercise, they spent more time in the field, constructing a harbour, basha building, contact drills and leadership.

Wallingford ACF also took part in the street collection for Help for Heroes to mark Armed Forces Day. Cadets collected in Wallingford from 9am and 4pm. They managed to raise a massive £1,189.55. We would like to thank all Cadets who took part and a special thanks to the people of Wallingford for donating so generously.

We were also able to help out at Woodcote Rally. It was a tiring but enjoy full event Cadets helped with the marshalling, car parking and doing a bit of recruitment. They were also given a pound challenge. This was to use communication skills to bring back the best item. Cadets managed to bring back a real fire truck!!

We are currently looking for Enthusiastic Adults to join the Team. For more information please contact me at [email protected]

What? No longer Wallingford LETS?

That’s right. But don’t worry, we have just had a name change. To reflect our wider membership from places other than just Wallingford, we

have changed our name to South Oxfordshire Local Exchange Trading Scheme.

We are still the same friendly and lively group, who enjoy helping each other, swapping items or providing information, practical help or expertise. We even go on holiday sometimes. So if you can help with the weeding, do a little mending, give a lift to places near or far or know how to prune a rose, do come and join us.

So many people feel they have no skills to offer, but we work very well as a group with a lot of people who say that, and in fact there are lots of ways to participate.

Perhaps you are good at knitting or sewing, do you know the best way to prune a fruit tree? Do you make a great birthday cake or pot of jam, could you take in a parcel for someone who knows they will be out when it is due to be delivered? Or do you have equipment you might be willing to lend? There are all sorts of ways to contribute. And, of course, there is the help you need to get the grass cut, sort out that niggling computer problem, take you to the train station or feed the cat while you are away for a few days.

Look us up at www.southoxfordshire-lets.org.uk and get in touch. We love getting new members!

New Business in Town

At No1 Choices – Café & Oriental Restaurant, we provide a healthy and fresh mix of Japanese and Korean dishes. Our café and restaurant

is located, just above the Lamb Arcade. During the daytime we serve a variety of light lunches, (oriental and western themed) as well as your usual coffees, teas and cakes. From 5pm onwards, we open as a formal restaurant where our guests can sit down or takeaway, and enjoy unique and traditional flavors from the Far East. Our second unit is designed a social part of the restaurant where customers can relax, eat and drink before and after dinner, take memorable picture(s), share it on the wall or take it away with them. The main restaurant is a beautiful room, a true character that many locals are not aware of it. Still many customers are coming through the door saying that they had no idea such a beautiful room existed. The challenge many previous business owners of the Lamb Café faced have been due to the fact that not many people yet aware of our entry from the Castle Street after 5pm when the Antique Centre closes. Nonetheless, since opening nearly two months ago, the people of Wallingford have been very supportive and welcoming. Many of our guests are visitors to the Antique Centre that happen to wonder into our shop by chance, seeing that something new has opened up. It is also pleasant to see guests, whom, having never tried Japanese or Korean food before, enjoying it and coming back for more. We started No1 Choices with the simple aim of bringing something unique and different to Wallingford, whilst keeping in mind the philosophy of healthy eating, excellent customer service, and a space to relax and enjoy freshly cooked cuisine. Many of us are worried of adding weight when we are out to a restaurant, thinking of the calories and weight so we never fully enjoy the food and flavor. It is time that we encourage eating fresh and healthy so we enjoy the taste of delicious dishes without being worried of size.

Due to certain health problems I am, for a short time, a user of a wheel chair. I was delighted to read, in the July magazine, that at long last something is going to be done about the appalling condition of the paths in the Town Centre. A hazard to those using sticks, and those pushing wheel chairs. Also a very frightening experience to those having to use the chairs.

Donation to Wallingford Museum

Portcullis Freemasons Lodge No. 6672 was delighted to be able to donate £1000 to the Wallingford Museum to assist in a project to

provide improved storage of historic artefacts and to modify toilet facilities for the disabled. The Museum is a registered charity, staffed by dedicated volunteers, and its finances depend entirely on donations, visitor entrance fees, and shop sales of books and souvenirs.

Brother Jacob Khokhlov, who initiated the idea for the donation, presented the cheque to Steve Capel-Davies, Chairman of the Museum, with Lodge officers and volunteers present.

The Museum will soon apply for planning permission to build a climate controlled storeroom to replace the existing shed, and to provide toilets for the disabled. Present space for storage has essentially been fully utilized. This will eventually give much needed exhibition space to improve displays in the upper floors.

Opened in 1981 and expanded in 2005, the Museum is housed in the medieval oak-beamed Flint House (Grade II listed) on the High Street. Annually, the 2000 or so adult visitors, with about 1000 children paying no entrance fee, provide an income of about £8,500 for maintenance, utilities, and improvements to the displays. The guest book indicates visitors are very much impressed with their experience.

Portcullis Lodge was pleased to be able to support such worthy projects which benefit the community. Should anyone know of a possible corporate or private sponsor who might be interested in helping to support the Museum, please contact the curator, Judy Dewey, on 651127 or by e-mail to [email protected]

Blewbury & Wallingford Cricket Club

Both our 1st and 2nd XI cricket teams are looking forward to the second half of the Cherwell League season with promotion in their sights.

But the club, which launched its new website - www.blewwallies.co.uk - last month is always keen to hear from potential new players to strengthen its squad. Juniors are also encouraged to get involved via the excellent sessions run on Friday evenings. Since financial issues forced Wallingford to merge with Blewbury three years ago, home games have been played at the latter’s idyllic Boham’s Road ground, with its superb contemporary pavilion. However, the Blew Wallies, as the club is colloquially known, is still Wallingford town’s team and it is appealing to those in the area interested in cricket to get in touch. The new website traces Wallingford’s cricket history, based largely on the memories of that amazing stalwart and former local PE teacher Albie Brannan, and anyone with anything to add to the story is invited to drop the club a line at [email protected].

In August our Outings Committee have arranged a visit to Stourhead House and gardens in Wiltshire on the 19th and there are still a few seats available. We shall begin our day at Stourhead with coffee and biscuits and this will be followed by a guided tour of the gardens and a walk around the lake. After lunch we shall have time to examine the most beautiful house.
