Interstate and Overseas Trips

Having been a member of MWC for 43 years, I have enjoyed many interstate and overseas trips during these years. No longer an active walker, I look with dismay through our monthly circulars, and wonder why we are no longer indulging in these extended activities.

The Club has been renowned, in past years, for our far wanderings, but apparently no longer. Lance Cranage and I organized and lead many such walks to widespread parts of the globe, and following this note is the final part of a reprint of one such trek to Nepal in 1995.

It is reprinted in the hope it may kindle a spark of adventure in some breast, and allow the Club to resume an activity we pursued so vigorously in past years. The average age of those on the Nepal trip was 65, so there are many members who would qualify to lead such walks.

MWC Tour to Nepal - 1995 - final instalment

12. Future Trips

These days, organizing a trip similar to this one is relatively simple. In 1995, much research was required and planning extended well over 12 months.

Today, Google sets out clearly the steps to be taken and I would urge those in the Club with a flair for travel into remote areas to lead such a venture - it will be an unforgettable experience.

Chatter Around the Hut

As this edition of the circular comes out to you the Walter Briggs Hut subcommittee members are preparing for an Open Day on Sunday 22 September.

If you have never visited our Walter Briggs Hut, or haven’t recently, this might be your opportunity.

On this day entry to the hut is free !!!

OK ... yes entry is usually free but I promise on this day we won’t put you to work with painting, housekeeping or track clearing. The time is yours to explore the hut and its beautiful surroundings. Enjoy a cuppa beside the fire place inside or roast a sneaky marshmallow on the fire pit outside. Perhaps take a walk to explore the Donna Buang summit to see the observation tower and learn about the mountain’s history from murals in the shelter. But be back at the hut by 1:30pm for a sausage, some salad and a slice of cake to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary. Details of the event are below in case you missed the last circular.

Sunday 22 Sept Walter Briggs Club Hut Open Day (RSVP by 16th September).

Leader: Tony Cagney 0411 843 609 [email protected]

Visitors Fee to be Introduced

Walk leaders are notified that the Club Executive has approved a $5 fee to be imposed on all visitors who attend Club walks, starting from January 1st 2020. This is common practice in many other bushwalking clubs and it will help cover the cost of insurance. Leaders will collect the cash from each visitor and then later transfer the money to the Club via a bank transfer. Details will be distributed to all walk leaders later this year.

Extreme Conditions & Fire Bans

On days of EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS leaders may cancel the activity at their discretion. If a day of TOTAL FIRE BAN is declared in a walk area, ALL outdoor activities in that area are CANCELLED.

Talk Over Lunch

All members are reminded of the regular social event which occurs on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (except January) at the Charles Dickens Tavern Bistro, in the basement of 290 Collins Street Melbourne, at 11:45 am for 12:00 noon.

6 Oct 2019

Rendezvous: Ada Tree carpark at 09:30 am.

Morning Tea: Ada Tree carpark picnic tables (some under cover). Composting toilet adjacent.

Maps: Vicmap ‘Neerim’ 8022-S Grading: Medium Distance: 13 km.

Directions: From Warburton Bakery, drive east on the Warburton Hwy (B380) and Woods Point Road (C511) for approximately 10 km, then turn right onto well formed (but unsealed) Brahams Road (Melway 292 A4). Follow this road for 13 km to the tee intersection with Big Creek Rd (generally keeping left at the several track junctions along the way and not venturing on to any of the 4WD tracks). Turn left at Big Creek Rd and drive along it for about 4 km before turning right onto Federal Rd (Ada River Rd) and following it another 3 km to the Ada Tree carpark. (There are sign posts at the Brahams Rd / Big Creek Rd and the Big Creek Rd / Federal Rd intersections, including ones to ‘Ada Tree’.) The 30 km car journey from Warburton to the Ada Tree carpark takes approximately 45 minutes. (Allow about another 75 minutes from middle eastern suburbs.)

Walk Details: From the Ada Tree carpark the walk will proceed to the Ada Tree – a very large and tall eucalypt tree – and, after a short time to admire the tree and read the interpretive signs, continue on to the ‘New Federal’ sawmill site, again stopping to learn about the history of this sawmill settlement that was active from 1935-49. (A return to the carpark via Federal Rd can be made from this point – total distance then about 6 km.) The walk then follows the route of the former Federal tramway towards Warburton. Partway along it is necessary to cross over the Little Ada River on stepping stones beside the collapsed tramway bridge. The difficulty of this depends on the water flow. Walking poles or a stout stick can be helpful here. The former Federal tramway route is then resumed to where it crossed over the Ada River Timber Company’s tramway from its ‘New Ada Mill’ to Powelltown. From here, a short downhill walk to the Ada No.2 sawmill site for lunch. Open space with some improvised seating, no shelter and no formal toilets. After lunch a brief foray southward along the old Ada tramway route across the Ada river, then return to the Federal and Ada tramway junction. From here, a further about 300 m uphill towards the New Ada mill site to view an abandoned and substantially intact steam winch and its associated boiler, then back to the junction and back along the Federal tramway route, re-crossing the Little Ada River, to the New Federal Mill site. Finally, returning directly from here via the closed-off part of Federal Rd to the Ada Tree carpark.

Notes: Intending participants are requested to contact the leader prior to this walk, and to be prepared for some muddy sections along the former

the site of the Greenvale TB Sanatorium from 1905-1955 and later Geriatric village (since demolished). Continue south on Providence Rad to Weroona Aboriginal cemetery.

From the cemetery there is a slightly steeper climb up to the lunch spot on Gellibrand hill. This has a radar station with has good views of the airport, Melbourne city and Mt Macedon and some stone ruins. The hilltop is somewhat exposed. No toilets. After lunch drop back down to Swain St. Cross Mickleham road (note: busy road) and then walk along Elphingstone Bvd to Glencairn Drive. To return take the 484 bus, either to Broadmeadows station or Roxburgh Park station. Broadmeadows is a shorter trip. No escapes.

Toilets: Homestead, Somerton Rd picnic ground.
