Do you ever feel there is a beast inside you bursting to get out? You can feel it sometimes, can't you? A voice engulfs your inner self, compelling you to make something out of your life. You feel the change in yourself: being metamor-phosized from someone normal to someone special. You fell like a god, bound in a human body. You are strong and cou-rageous. You are bold. You are unstoppable! But then, reality settles in and soon these feelings are history. You wonder where is that voice gone? Was it ever there or were you just undergoing through the delusion of grandeur. It isn't hard at all to pump yourself to an 'emotional-high' state. Visit a seminar of any good motivational speaker and you will feel motivated, attend any pop/rock concert and you will be dancing in the aisle feeling and pumped up. Try a more simple approach, turn on your favorite music genre at full volume, stand tall, breathe strong, chest out, shoulders back, strut like a superhero and shout "YESSS!", you may look like a dolt but times actually works to charge your emo-tions! After sometime this emotional and motivational up heave fades away. All the bright and revolu-tionary ideas which came to your mind now seem impractical. Have you ever experienced thinking "I will get 100% grade point average this semester" and week later forgotten it? I’m sure a lot. Getting motivated and keeping the same tempo throughout the action phase is difficult. The key to motivation and keeping it intact is state management. Several ways can be adopted to develop this, and depending on your personality, each method can be either effective or not. One way to do this is using techniques like anchoring i.e. associating an emotion to a physical trigger. This, however, is not as effective since one constantly needs to recondition the anchoring source. Another method for emotional motivation is to jet down the pleasure associate with a task and the pain of not doing it. The idea here again, is to stir up emotions to get oneself mo-tivated to do a particular job. Anyone who has undergone emotional motivation will radi-cally pin point something: this kind of motivation is short lived, even though the emotions involved are intense. This is more common for technically minded people because a point comes when pure logic overwhelms our emotions. Take an example of visiting a motivational speaker: every time you listen to him/her you get the emotional ‘yo-yo’ effect, but soon this fades away and your personal intellect takes over. Everyone is an emotional creature to a certain extent, but for the 'smart' people, their emotional sensors eventually scrub off any emotion which doesn't satisfy their logic.

Motivation for Smart People By NS Syed M. Ather Ali

Does this mean that logic-influenced and technical minded people can never be motivated? NO! They can be motivated by intellect, logic reasoning and sometimes judgment. This is not a bad idea at all. Take an example for instance, I go to the college every day four days a week, I don't need any emo-tional backup to come here, I just come here because it satis-fies my mind that I am going to learn something new. simi-larly, if one sets a goal to achieve something which is coher-ent with his/her logic, he/she can be motivated for achieving it. Some goals might seem right at first, but when you dig deep within, you see you can never be motivated enough to achieve them because deep down inside you know that you are not satisfied by setting them as the goals you would like to achieve . Goals which are too timid and little do not invoke the moti-vation one needs. A person stays in the delusion that he can anytime accomplish that goal and never fells motivated in actually accomplishing it. On the other hand, it may seem counter-intuitive that one might be motivated at all if he/she sets scary goals. But, the

number of times this has occurred in peo-ple's success that its tough to count this out. Look around the world for successful peo-ple, they set goals which lay well outside their comfort zones, yet they feel motivated about achieving their target, not emotionally, but through logic and eventually succeeded in accomplishing the goal. Take example of Abraham Lincoln, son of a peanut farmer who became America's most influential president. There countless more example to observe. Setting big, audacious, scary goals is the prime way for 'smart' people to get them-

selves motivated in actually doing something and achieving their targets. One just has to try it and extract out all fears, only this will trigger and activate one’s inner-resources for the completion of the goal with motivation being the chief driving force.

Everyone is an emotional

creature to a certain extent,

but for the 'smart' people,

their emotional sensors

eventually scrub off any

emotion which doesn't satisfy

their logic.

When you wake up in the morning, is there anything you want more than just to sleep five more minutes? Same was the case with me when I woke up at 7:15 in the morning. I was up late the last night because of a major project and covering some assignments. I kept putting my alarm on snooze again and again till the very last minute I could afford to be in bed. At 7:50 I finally got up and dashed out to get ready. As always I was getting late for my first lecture. Walking on the ring road, half running, I heard a voice “Saaa…b!” … “Ruuk jain saab!” A staff appeared out of nowhere and was on to me with a huge greedy grin on his face. He scanned me and found quite a lot to fine me for. After a few minutes of unsuccessful pleading and getting fined 500 over the haircut I was running towards the class in an even worse mood. I raced again towards my block and just as I reached the door of my class I saw the lecturer who was about to enter the class. I slowed down for him to enter first. But when I entered the room he turned around and asked “yes? Why are you late?” And I just stood there with a startled face, trying to catch my breath and calculating the number of classes I could afford to miss. All this created such a depressed forlorn look on my face that he had to let me in. Phew…. Now it was hard to keep awake in the first lecture of the day, but I somehow managed. After that I decided to go to the library to lookup some stuff. As I entered the library and turned left, quite a lot of pairs of heads raised and looked at me with a curious expression and there expres-sions asking me a simple question “what are you doing here alone?” I asked myself the same thing and turned right towards the computer section of the library. Wishing to use the internet I tried to find a computer that worked. Each one had some problem and I had to suppress the urge to combine different components from different computers in an attempt to make a fully working PC. But found out that the net server was down and found that I had no internet access. Then I decided to give up and go to have something to eat at the famous not hot spt. Getting my things from the crowded shop as I reached the lawn yet again a staff appeared and shouted “Saaab! Ye families ki jagah hay!” and I was left in a half standing half sitting position with a cup in one hand and a plate in the other, appreciat-ing the humor of what the staff just said but too caught up in my own predicament to enjoy it much. Then I accompanied the staff to the approved spot for boys and ate my breakfast in a congested noisy space looking at the empty lawn that I could’ve enjoyed in-stead. Wondering how does the staff do that, you look here you there and just as you are about to do something forbidden they al-ways appear in the same manner with a Punjabi movie style voice and Mustafa qureshi style grin clearly saying phhass giya ain bachaya!. Finally I got free from the college and returned to my hostel aiming to study with some out living class fellows. Just when we have started off a bearer comes in and tells us that out livings are not allowed in the hostel! And so went on another simple happy day in our college. We are the educational elite in Pakistan claiming to be in league with LUMS and GIKI. No UPS, no generator, no solid net avail-ability, and oh yeah! We still have problems with our bathrooms. It’s beginning to look like that all we’ve got are rules or broken out of order facilities.

Another day in College Written by Harris Janjua

It was a pleasure to burn. So begins the perfect dark master piece dealing with human freedom and censorship written by Ray Bradbury. The name Fahrenheit 451 represents the temperature at which book paper burns. The book depicts a future where televi-sion dominates the culture and books are banned and burnt. Rigid conformity is expected from everyone and independent thought is banished.

It portrays that if pointless television, unbound commercialism and meaningless trivia is allowed to overwhelm reading and thoughtful debate, it would lead to a society which might be stable but so mindless and stagnant that it would not be worth living in.

The story revolves around a person whose profession is to hunt down books and anything related to literature and burn them down to ashes. But things begin to change once he starts to taste the for-bidden fruit of knowledge.

This book is not just about censorship, it also deals with the inherent tension existing between knowledge and ignorance in ad-vanced societies and intellectual freedom in an environment of oppressive indoctrination.

As compared with dystopian heavy weights like Aldous Hux-ley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four, this book is quite short and easy to read. Yet it loses none of its potency and flavor. The use of the mythic ideas of fire salaman-ders and the phoenix make the book more poetic than any other dystopian work. And unlike many futuristic works it gives a unique literary pleasure.

We have started our descent into a media driven society where moral education, reading, and reason are being made extinct or downright subversive. And the unsettling insights of this book are more relevant today than sixty years ago when it was originally written.

POEM PC ARSLAN AMER QAZI DE30

"SHE LEFT....ME" I gave my heart in her hands, She just looked, and gazed at me, All the joys had stopped when, She thought as a kid of me. All the times i spent for her, Can'tsay those were the best for me. But whenever,me,she used to see, Pleasure did come back to me, All the times i looked for her, In the darkness she searched for me, But the end was not the same, It was a shock for me, But was very hard to see, My life couldn't do this to me! When I had waited so long for thee, Couldn't she wait a bit for me

Its worth mentioning here that modeling and simulation of Dynamic systems using bond graph method is a unique course be-ing offered only at EME College and conducted by Dr Afzaal Malik for the last 13 years. There is no other university/institution offering any thing like that. Dr Afzaal Malik is known for his research across the globe and to his credit he has as many as one hundred and twenty five research papers. At the moment fours scholars are doing their PhD under his supervision. Two out of them are getting almost over with it. At overage, six student complete their Masters every year under his supervision/guidance. In recognition of his research work, the Pakistan Academy of sciences awarded Dr Afzaal Malik a Gold Medal and gave an award for the best research in Pakistan in the category of engineer-ing and technology for the year 2001. Dr Afzaal Malik was handed over the award by Dr Atta Ur Rehman in 2002. South Asia publications awarded him the “ 2001 Star Laureate” award for best research in the category of engineering in 2007 for Pakistan in a competition on all Pakistan basis, It was decided by a panel com-prising judges who were the three vice chancellors of the universi-ties. One of his research papers related to tribology was declared the top most paper in USA after peer review of research papers from all over the world. Dr Afzaal Malik has got a deep interest in structural analysis and problems related to them. He has contributed in enhancing the efficiency of Al Khalid Tank being manufactured at HIT by initiat-ing research related to auto frettege, the engineering used to strengthen pressure vessels including gun barrels. Dr Afzaal Malik has a wealth of experience and to keep him-self abreast with the latest development he very regularly attends the International Conferences/Seminars by ASME, JSME, CNS. Dr Afzaal Malik is convinced Pakistan has got a matchless name “ The land of pure” our capital is Islamabad meaning “ the city of peace “ and we should be good citizens with our focus on education and it must be research based education. Talent and hard work are the only two attributes required for the quality education and we as a nation have a lot potential and this would improve the ranking of our universities a great deal. NS Malik Basharat the editor feels proud to have interviewed such a learned, highly qualified, experienced, an engineer and a scientist and above all the personality who is held in the highest of the esteems. In fact Dr Afzaal Malik is the real asset of the depart-ment of Mechanical Engineer in particular and NUST in general. The editors of campbuzz wish Dr Afzaal a very happy time as Head of Department and would like to congratulation him on as-suming the prestigious appointment of HOD DME.

UK TRIP Continued from Page 8

It was a 2 week tour which started on 24th of July. The first univer-sity visited was University of Surrey, which is located in Guild-ford, Surrey in the South East of England. Students visited different departments and were shown high-tech laboratories and their state-of-the-art equipment. They were also told about the research car-ried out in different departments. One of these departments is the conducts extensive research on small satellites and has a high num-ber of staff. Postgraduate programs and admission procedures were explained to prospective students. This university announced that it would exempt the students of NUST from the IELTS test due to the high ranking and reputation of NUST. NUST has already signed an MOU with University of Surrey. The next destination was the University of Southampton, which is located on the south coast of England. This university is a member of the elite “Russell Group”, an Association of leading UK research-intensive Universities. Students got a chance to see different re-search facilities and laboratories. The students also visited an under-construction clean room complex, which when completed will be one of the most exciting interdisciplinary scientific research facili-ties in the country. The trip also included a visit to the University of Leeds. This uni-versity too is member of the Russell Group. The university pro-vided excellent accommodation and catering services to the visiting delegation. Students of Electrical and Computer Engineering were taken to the School of Computing, whereas the students of Mecha-tronics and Mechanical Engineering visited the School of Process Environmental and Material Engineering (SPEME). Here the stu-dents got a chance to see different state-of-the-art Electron Micro-scopes. Students also visited the School of Mechanical Engineering (SME). The last destination of the trip was the University of Glasgow, situated in the beautiful, historic and exciting city of Glasgow in Scotland. This university is ranked amongst the top 100 universi-ties of the world and has a history of more than 500 years. The best part of the stay in Glasgow was the visit to the City Chambers where a dinner was hosted in the honor of the Pakistani delegation by Mr. Hamza Malik, a Pakistani-born Councilor of Glasgow. The trip concluded on 8th of August when a few students returned to Pakistan but several extended their stay in the UK. The trip was an admirable step taken by the NUST, because it was a chance for the students to get exposure to foreign universities and to see their standard of research with which they have to compete in order to strive in their field. Visits arranged to these universities at the undergrad level help in enhancing the reputation of NUST. Collaboration with these universities must be established, and such visits must be regularly arranged in the future. Degree-27 Electrical Meets the Commandant

CI Brig. Abdul Ghafoor was also present on this occasion. The meeting formally began with Commandant’s address in which he laid emphasis on responsibilities of students and importance of setting goals and objectives in life. He highlighted that it is the re-sponsibility of those 30%of Pakistan’s youth, who are fortunate enough to get education, to transfer education to those 70 % who are unable to have this privilege. Then the students sought permiss-

Super sixes cricket tournament organized by SAS attracted 16 teams and kept them busy for a week. The final was played on 6th Nov 2008. the finalists “Laado 29” remained unbeaten throughout and won the tournament. “Jeega Jeega” was other team to play the final but lost. The winning team has been promised Rs 3000 as a cash prize by the SAS. The tournament was very well organized and everybody playing and watching enjoyed. We could have easily seen the sportsman spirit being exhibited by the players and almost all the games. Winning or loosing does not matter at all. They people who matter in SAS deserve our applause in conducting such a nice tournament but at the very same time they themselves should also exhibit sportsman spirit and except the defeat gracefully. In sheer disap-pointment they were seen throwing the bat in the air while walking back to the pavilion. It is expected that in the days to come and the events to follow it would be all gentlemanliness being displayed. The editors of campbuzz congratulates “Laado 29” on their suc-cess with flying colours.
