ISSUE NUMBER 23 - Spring Term 2016 During the latter part of the Autumn Term and, as announced in the last Issue of Morecambe Road News, I was elected by my fellow Governors to take on the role of Chair of Governors for our exceptional school. I will endeavour to ensure that their choice is well founded. I will strive to continue the good work of Mrs. Janet Ward who, on retiring from the role as Chair, continues to play an essential role on the governing body. Now retired, during my working life I had the opportunity to visit nearly every school in Lancashire at some point in my career. I have had an association with Morecambe Road School for more than thirty years and have always received a warm welcome from staff and pupils. I have maintained a great affection and respect for this school and all it strives to achieve. In mid February, the Governors received a generous invitation to a 3 Course Lunch created, cooked and served by young men and young ladies from Year 11, with the assistance of Mrs. Leach and her team. After a long, dark and very wet winter this turned out to be a wonderful event that was greatly appreciated by all those invited. The food, its presentation and the service we received was truly exceptional. Members of the Governing Body usually come together in a group, around a table, for the purpose of school business. This lunch time event afforded us the opportunity to talk together in an informal and social atmosphere and allowed us to learn more about one another away from the formality of committee. This issue of the Newsletter is packed full of reports detailing school events, clubs, educational visits and pupil achievement all of which is only possible through the inspiration, dedication and hard work of all the staff of the school in whatever capacity they work and is underwritten by informed and supportive parents, carers and families. Morecambe Road News, I was elected by my fellow Governors to take on the role of

Chair of Governors for our exceptional school. I will endeavour to ensure that their

choice is well founded. I will strive to continue the good work of Mrs. Janet Ward

Howtown Outward Bound Y10

1st – 5th February 2016 Twelve Keystage 4 pupils have recently enjoyed a week of “Adventure and

Challenge” at Howtown Outward Bound, Ullswater.

Supported by Jim Townley, Sandra Bateson and Jo Gibson, the group took part in

a variety of outdoor pursuits in some very good, if wet and windy, weather.

We set off on Monday morning, breaking our journey by stopping for lunch at

Tebay and then travelled on to Howtown. There we met our tutors, Gary and

Rosie. After sorting out our rooms, we went down to the lake and splashed

around. We dried off and changed for dinner then later on we followed the night

line around the grounds.

On Tuesday after breakfast we went into the tunnels which are artificial

potholes. It was muddy and dark inside the tunnels. In the afternoon we climbed

a gorge in Martindale. As we climbed up the stream we saw wild deer on the

fellside. That evening we tackled the orienteering course.

Wednesday was expedition day. In the morning we packed and prepared for our

expedition and then set off in canoes for a tour of the lake. We stopped for lunch

in Howtown Bay. Later we stopped at Hallin Hag to play some games before we

canoed across the lake to Halsteads, which is another Outward Bound centre on

Ullswater. The lake was a bit choppy but the sky was sunny and bright. We

moored our canoes on the shore and collected wood for a fire. We cooked our

evening meal on Trangias around the camp fire. That evening we walked to the

waterfall at Aira Force and slept out all night in yurts.

On Thursday we cooked our own breakfast before starting the day’s activities. In

the morning we had a go at climbing a telegraph pole and jumping onto a trapeze.

Then after lunch we caught a speed boat to Hallin Fell. Some of us walked round

the fell while the rest of us scrambled up to the obelisk and down the other side.

We all then walked back to the centre. After tea we cleaned our kit and played

so games turning in for the night.

On Friday, we tidied our rooms, then cleaned and returned the kit we had

borrowed. We then went climbing on the rocks above Howtown. After lunch it

was time to return to school. We were all looking forward to our own beds and

seeing our families again.

A big thank you to all the people who supported us at Howtown especially Pete the

chef and Gary and Rosie the tutors.

Thank you for all the support, the school raised £880, which was better than we expected. This couldn’t

have been achieved without the help and support of the parents and friends of Morecambe Road School

whether it was donating items, buying raffle tickets or being at the fair.

Enjoy the Easter Holildays!

think about our school, from the quality of teaching to dealing with bullying and poor behaviour. The survey can be completed at any time; you don’t have to wait until the school is being inspected.

OFSTED will use the information you provide when making decisions about which schools to inspect and when.

Click ‘Give your views’ to register and complete a survey to help your child’s school improve. https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/

There is also a link to click on for Parent View in our school website - http://www.morecambe.lancsngfl.ac.uk. On the school home page go to ‘OFSTED, Performance and Assessments’ on the left side of this web page.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Morecambe Road School is teamed up with a charity called schoolangel.org.uk

which will help our school to raise money, along with many other schools in the UK

by shopping through their browser.

School Angel works with many big shopping brands in the UK, for example, Amazon,

Argos, Next, Boots and many more which have agreed to donate a portion of the

profit, they normally make on your shopping if you use the School Angel website to

visit their shop. You are guaranteed to only pay exactly the same price, for whatever

you buy, but our school will also receive a donation.

School Angel is really simple to use and our school has its own charity page already

set up which you can visit here:

http://www.schoolangel.org.uk/morecambe-road-school.html

Once on the page all you need to do is click on the logo for whatever shop you would

like to visit. School Angel does not need you to ever create an account or login, there

are no passwords to remember and they will never trouble you with any junk mail.

We are really excited that School Angel can help our school raise lots of money. So

please remember to use the School Angel site when you shop online and ask your

friends and relatives to support us too!

As we start to book our Summer Holidays we hope that our staff, you, your friends

and family might consider visiting this website prior to your purchases.

Many thanks for your ongoing support. Every purchase you make will really make a

difference.

Thank you
