The Africa Regions of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM Africa) and the WWF International (WWF Africa) are strengthening their collaboration to stimulate and empower young people to become stewards of the environment and promoters of sustain-able development practices in their local communities across Africa.

FOCUS ON NATIONAL SCOUT ORGANIZATIONS

More than 1,000 Scouts from all over the world attended this year’s 162nd Founder’s Day celebrations in Nyeri County as political lead-ers called for the organisation to be more inclusive in their pro-grammes.

The Scouts, who have been camping at Kabiruini grounds for a week, came from all over the country as well as the US, Denmark, Britain, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. The Scout Movement Founder Lord Robert Baden Powell started the organisation 112 years ago and each year, Scouts visit his grave in Nyeri.

Chief Commissioner, Victor Radido, said the movement was pushing for a more international outlook when it comes to celebrating Found-er’s Day. This is after the movement officials devolved the celebra-tions to county level and reduced the number of Scouts making the pilgrimage to Nyeri. “We want to appreciate attendance of our fellow Scouts from various countries from across the world. This gives the function a more international outlook,” he said.

Chief Guest Governor Mutahi Kahiga said the movement had been consistent in instilling discipline, confidence, courage and patriotism in young people.Area MP Ngunjiri Wambugu said Nyeri was uniquely placed to support the scouting movement. “Nyeri is home of the scouts but we should remember that the late Baden Powell also had a close relationship with South Africa and the UK.”

This day was celebrated by Scouts world over. In South Africa, sev-eral Scout Troops from the Eland District came together on February 24th, to celebrate the day. As part of the festivities, Scouts and Cubs decided to rejoice at Bedfordview Primary School, where held a Scouts Own, a short ceremony, with a presentation of awards. The ceremony was followed by fun activities, such as the introduction to traditional South-African sport games.

100 Scouts Leaders Trained in Gambia

The Gambia Scout Association, through the Messengers of Peace initiative, managed to train 100 Leaders (50 Patrol Leaders and 50 Unit Leaders), with the main purpose of addressing and bridging the gap between the realities of running a Scout unit (especially in the rural Gambia) and the accepted standard in terms of best practices.

During the training, participants were exposed to Scouting through role play, simulation exercises and practical experiences. They were thus able to practice in real-time how to conduct unit meetings, PLC meetings, programme planning, etc. Furthermore, the use of ex-perts in a joint forum for both patrol leaders and unit leader trainees in the field of First Aid, Drug Abuse (National Drug Law Enforce-ment Agency), Sexual & Reproductive Health (Family Planning As-sociation), Child Abuse (Child Protection Alliance), Illegal Migration (Immigration Department) and Community Policing (Gambia Police Force) provided first hand positive experiences to the trainees.

Some of the main outcomes of this course are a better understand-ing on how the GSA is managed; a willingness for more democracy and transparency within Scout Units and districts; improved knowl-

As part of the “Unionist Scouting Week” Celebrations, also known as “Herinandron’ny Tily” in Madagascar, the Unionist Scouts of Mad-agascar Tily Eto Madagasikara organised various socio-educational activities from 22nd February to 3rd March 2019 with the Malagasy society in the 22 administrative regions of the country. The Found-er’s Day on February 22nd, 2019 was the starting point for all the actions initiated and decided by the districts following the schedule of the General Commission “Foibe Tily”.

During the weekend, the southern district of the capital Antanana-rivo advanced ahead of its peers, distributing food to families who were victims of the previous flood that raged the capital on February 19th. 1000 Scouts aged 6 to 25 from 60 local groups answered the call of the district officials and donated food, e.g. 100 litres of cook-ing oil and 400 kg of rice for the Namontana district.

Kenyan Scouts Build a Library for a Children’s HomeTreehouse Children’s Home, based in Lucky Summer area in Nairobi, Kenya, is a home for children who have been abandoned by their parents. A team of Scouts and Scout Leaders in Nairobi decided to visit the home each year during the December holiday season in order to celebrate Christmas with them. During one of the visits, they noted that the home had a store for keeping books that was overcrowded. To deal with this lack of space, the Scouts therefore decided to set up a library for the children.

The project was divided into two phases. Phase 1 was to fundraise towards renovating one of the rooms and setting up the right fur-niture for the library. Phase 2 was to conduct a book drive so as to stock the library with current books. Doing so, the team was able to raise 1300 dollars to renovate the room and set up some shelves with books.

The children at the home are already enjoying services at the li-brary, especially during holidays and after school. At present, the Scouts’ main objective is to make the library fully functional by the end of the year.

A delegation of 11 members of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) of Thailand who are also members of the World Scout Par-liamentary Union (WSPU), together with their Kenyan counterparts were recently in Nairobi on four-day visit. Led by the Speaker and President of the Thai NLA, the President of the WSPU, the Ambas-sador of Thailand to Kenya and hosted by the 3rd Vice President of WSPU and Chairman of WSPU Kenya Chapter, the legislators were in the country to strengthen the Scout Parliamentary Union in Kenya as well as discuss ways to establish similar unions across African countries.

At the meeting with the Deputy President, the Scout movement and its Parliamentary Union were hailed as important stakeholders with a role to play in the deepening of people-to-people relationships between countries. “We value, as government, what Scouts are do-ing in Kenya by inculcating morals into young people through value education and mentorship. We are open for discussions into how we can work with non-state actors to drive the country’s big four devel-opment agenda and facilitate people-to-people connections between Kenya and its friends,” said the Deputy President.

The role of parliament is supporting Scouting was viewed as one that provides political goodwill, supports youth friendly legislation and policies and to bring the movement closer to decision makers so that it can effectively influence national and international conver-sations on youth. In a country with devolved governance system, it was observed that Scouting in Kenya can only grow rapidly with the support of the County Governments; many of whom have commit-ted through their Governors to support the movement.

Among the many outcomes of this visit, is that there will be greater connection between Scouting in Thailand and Kenya through ex-change programmes, inter-parliamentary cooperation and growth in trade and investments between the two countries.
